becoming a huge problem as inmates are using them for criminal activity. two years ago, murder suspect patrick byes used a cell phone from prison to order a hit on carl lackl, who was set to testify against him in court. lackl was shot and killed in front of his home in rosedale. >> we hope when they come to prison they disconnect from the criminal activity, but the cell phones make it easy to stay engaged. there have been several cases where the criminal activity has been ordered from prisons. >> reporter: maryland also supports cell phone jamming. it is 5:33. here is a look at what's happening on this friday the 4th. the kir cuss is in town. the cole grornlg circus will be erecting the largest big top. the shows are tonight at 4:30 and 7:30 and runs through monday. for all of you classic car drivers, the usa fall tour will have its official stop in front of the b & o railroad in

ellicott city going on today. the liquor board has ordered a cumberland tavern to close after three police officers were hurt in a fight involving about 30 people. the board gave the owner of wonder bar six months to find a buyer for its liquor license and says it cannot be used in that location. this follow as i disturb aeness last friday that made a police corporal fear for his own life when he was surrounded by 10 to 15 drunk bar patrons. if you are driving this holiday weekend and get pulled over, here's a quick refresher course on what not to do. what you are about to see was recorded by a news crew in oklahoma during a ride along. >> i need to you go back and have a seat in your car. have a seat in the car. have a seat in the car and we'll talk about it. >> i'm not finding that. you can take me to jail if you

agency. linda, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. nothing is off the table. the mayor has to slash more than $60 million from her budget. to get to that number, she's asking police officers and firefighters to take furlough days. the president of the city's firefighter union says the mayor's staff asked for nearly $3 million in cuts for the department. if the union will not accept cuts, the firefighters may have to be laid off. there is a clause that says police officers cannot be forced to take furlough days. if the police department cannot find enough savings, other city workers will have to absorb the pain. >> even more important than that, it doesn't make sense to take police officers off of the street in terms of the safety for the citizens. >> reporter: now, the president of afscme, the union that represents workers for most city agencies like trash collection and public works is set to meet with city leaders

later today. linda so, abc 2 news. john cataractis' appearance in court may be postponed because of the furloughs. he is charged with paying for a pole for helen holton. other state lawmakers will be off for five days. the latest plan would require court employees to take 3 to 10 days of unpaid leave depending on the salaries. a look now at some of the top stories we're working on for you this morning. anne arundel county police have released photos of three women accused of robbing a beauty supply store. it happened right there on ritchie highway in brooklyn park. according to police, the suspects grabbed products without paying. one of the women sprayed the clerk with pep are spray, so if you have any information that could help police nab these suspects, call metro crimestoppers at 1-866-7-

>> reporter: one day after sam moxley was sentenced to two years of supervised probation for drunk driving, morgan publicly announced his intentions to run against him. greg morgan says he doesn't want councilman sam moxley's legal troubles to be a reflection on his campaign. he says he's been talking about running for the seat for five years. morgan calls councilman moxley a friend. >> that was a concern of mine that i might look opportunistic. i had to keep it going. >> reporter: morgan says he's proven himself worthy of holding an elected seat by launching community initiatives like the tree park. >> no one answered at councilman moxley's home. an assistant says he's unavailable. on the street, mixed feelings about the incumbent and his admission before the court that he's an alcoholic and needs help. >> i think that that's separate from what he does.
