"good morning maryland" time coming up on 5:31. overnight, another police-involved soog in the city and -- shooting in the city and we're first on the scene. our overnight photographer pete "on the street" o'neill was there when two baltimore city police officers were trying to make a drug arrest in the 2200 block of orleans. happened after midnight. an officer with the monument street initiative was forced to shoot after the suspect attacked the other officer with a knife. the officer had a bulletproof vest that protected him from getting hurt. the suspect died at the hospital. we'll have a live report a little later on from linda so on where the investigation now stands. and after breaking the story yesterday we spent the rest of the day in the johns hopkins university neighborhood.

>> we heard there was praise and criticism directed towards the hopkins student who used a samurai sword to stop a robbery. the alleged robber died. sherrie johnson has more. >> reporter: this morning baltimore city police are expected to beef up patrols here at university parkway near johns hopkins university. so far we have not seen any added patrols but this comes after a rash of burglaries in this area and a student used a sword to kill a suspected burglar. the suspect was killed yesterday after he -- the suspect is named donald, a man with 29 convictions for breaking and entering. this is exclusive video we first brought you on "good morning maryland" yesterday and police say after he lunged at the student that is when the student attacked him with the sword. it's been an alarming wakeup call for other students. >> this is the kind of thing that students at any urban campus need to be paying

attention to. >> it's unavoidable. some things are going to happen. >> the dean of student life sent a letter to students reminding them in case of burglary call 911 and do not attempt to confront the intruder, rather secure yourself in a locked area until police arrive. so far there's no word yet if charges will be filed against that student. reporting live in north balm, sherrie johnson, abc2 news. 5:33. the anti-gang law in maryland is not tough enough and prosecutors say they want the laws to crack down harder. the state's gang prosecution act went into effect in 2007. the state's top law enforcement officials including baltimore state's attorney patricia jessamy met with the house judiciary committee in annapolis. prosecutors say the wording makes it too difficult to legally define the offenders and punishments are not tough enough. >> we need a better strategy. >> prosecutors also discussed

black man should not be president. the fda has now given the green light for the new h1n1 or swine flu vaccine and researchers at the university of maryland could not be more pleased. 24ed done they had done all the trials a few weeks ago. the h1n1 could be available to us by mid-october at 90,000 locations across the country. meanwhile, data from the university of maryland was used to license the vaccine. no major side effects were reported, just soreness and some flu-like symptoms. 5:35 now. president barack obama is pushing his economic and health care plans. here's video where he spoke to auto workers at a gm plant outside of youngstown, ohio. this was yesterday. he told the crowd the economy is on its way back from the brink. tomorrow the president heads here. he'll speak at a health reform rally at university of maryland college park.

welcome back to "good morning maryland." >> let's find out about our weather. some areas, some not? >> some areas wet, yeah, some not. wanted to elaborate a little bit. seeing puddles out there, that could be worse than actual rain falling, that's when people do spin out. please be careful. it came through sykesville and baltimore county, from pikesville and owings mills, now sliding through eastern baltimore county. we'll zoom in a little to harford county now, talked about from perry hall and kingsville picking up about a quarter-inch of rain, knocking on the door stepof bel air and

"good morning maryland" news time 5:44. two plain clothes officers patrolling orleans street had to use deadly force. >> this happened before 12:30 this morning. linda so live with what happened. >> reporter: the undercover officers were investigating drug trafficking in the area. police say things quickly got out of hand when a suspect stabbed an officer in the back. officers with the monument street initiative were making a drug arrest in the 2800 block of orleans street. this is exclusive video from our our overnight photographer pete "on the street" o'neill. police say they were forced to shoot the suspect after he attacked one of the officers with a knife. the officer was wearing a bulletproof vest that protected him. the suspect died at the hospital. >> the suspect tried to stab an officer in the back. the officer's partner witnessed this withdrew his service weapon and fired multiple shots in defense of that officer. >> reporter: the officers are on routine administrative leave. police haven't released the name of the suspect shot and

killed. in the studio, linda so, abc2 news. a look at some of the other top stories. still no word yet if police will file charges against the johns hopkins student accused of using a samurai sword to kill an intruder. police say the suspect has been identified as 49-year-old donald rice and they say he was an habitual offender. rice died at the scene. lawyers for accused city councilwoman helen holton produced what they say is evidence holton is being singled out. documents reveal that developer ronald lipscomb also exceeded campaign contribution limits paying for a political survey for a state delegate, carter, who ran against sheila dixon in 2007. lipscomb has been at the center of a city hall corruption probe which already led to indictments against holton and sheila dixon. another high-profile case in baltimore grabbing headlines again. the state's highest court agreed to hear new arguments in the lawsuit involving that

kevin clark being illegally fired. he was fired in 2004 by then mayor martin o'malley who claimed that clark was dismissed because of a domestic dispute between he and his girlfriend. a claim clark refuted since his firing. 17-year-old crofton buoy who admitted to raping a 7-year-old will be tried as an adult. police say david razewsky lured the girl from the playground to his house where he allegedly raped her. the prosecutor says he will be better able to be helped in a juvenile facility. the trial is set for september 29th. a baltimore county judge upheld nearly all the of the award for the 89 homeowners who live in the jacksonville area. in 2006 the equivalent of four tankers of gas seeped into the groundwater before more than a month before the leak was even discovered. a woman was serving in the

u.s. army found a very different threat on american soil. >> tasha hill was taking her daughter to a cracker barrel in georgia when a man leaving the restaurant violently swung open the door. >> i had to push my daughter out of the way, turn to the man and just said, excuse me sir, you need to watch yourself, you almost hit my daughter in the face. from there it went downhill. >> the man stood in her face and began to yell. >> he said no, you're black (bleep) -- he said - >> what happened then? >> punched me in my face. >> repeatedly until tasha hill actually blacked out. remember, her daughter was there with her. the whole thing happened in front of a terrified 7-year-old girl. police eventually arrested the man charging him with battery, disorderly conduct and cruelty to children. an update on the estate of

former ravens quarterback steve mcnair his widow michelle says that the inventory lists nearly $20 million in assets including nearly $17 million in stocks and bonds. he also owned a restaurant worth $45,000. mcnair's farms incorporated cattle farm business in mississippi worth $1.2 million and $700,000 home in mississippi. one thing that was not listed in the inventory, the couple's residence valued at over $3 million. because mcnair had not done estate planning his widow michelle must go through the probate process. could nba superstar shaquille o'neal outswim olympic sensation michael phelps? >> out, shaquille o'neal. what a race! >> no. >> what? >> can you believe that? phelps beat shaq by just 2/10 of a second in the final race of a three-stage competition. shaq won the first race but no

maryland. we have a northeasterly wind, going to lock in the moisture. we have more moisture trying to come up from a separate system on back towards the south. you can see it rotating across the lower mississippi valley. we're pretty much stuck in this pattern. though there's a little bit of clearing that may try to work through as we head on in through friday afternoon and saturday looks like this moisture is going to try to come back at us, at the end of the weekend. today not a complete washout. when you see raindrops a lot of people think, uh-oh, but it will be hit or miss showers and wet feel to the air as temperatures only about 74 degrees this afternoon. some drizzle, showers, fog tonight. down to 62. tomorrow, looks like pore rain tries to develop -- more rain tries to develop midday. it tries to end by friday morning, 75 in the afternoon, 73 saturday. 69 with more rain returning sunday. kim? the beltway is running smoothly. no problems to let you know about on the outer loop or inner loop. here at 95 you see the roads are a little wet so as justin said definitely use caution
