intersection of 795 and route 140. overall though we've had ourselves some wet roads because of the rain that already passed through. you're dry now in owings mills at 63 but some wet pavement and looks like we're going to a high of 74 this afternoon with the chance of more showers. 6:31. let's check the roads with kim. >> no problems to let you know about on southbound 95 or southbound on the bw parkway or southbound on route 29 for all our friends heading to the dc area. like he said you will see slowing approaching southbound 95 headed to the whitemarsh area coming from harford county, also southbound on 83 out of timonium approach the beltway. traffic is moving at reduced speeds but again no incidents so far this morning. we're looking pretty good. we have a lane closure in pikeville, northbound reisterstown road approaching old milford mill road. doing construction so the northbound lanes will be closed, alternating traffic gets by southbound. and utility crews still on 22 and 136 repairing the gas main break. we have a disabled vehicle 195

"good morning maryland" news time now 6:33. six hours ago, orleans street in southeast baltimore words and then gunfire. >> abc2 news linda so reports on city police saying they had no choice but to shoot a man who threatened them. >> reporter: the shots were fired when police say a drug suspect stabbed an undercover officer in the back. two officers with the monument street initiative on midnight were making a drug arrest on the 2800 block of orleans street. this is exclusive video from our overnight photographer pete "on the street" o'neill. police say they were forced to shoot the suspect after he attacked one of the officers with a knife. the officer was wearing a bulletproof vest that protected him from getting hurt.

the suspect later died at the hospital. >> the subject tried to stab an officer in the back. the officer's partner witnessed this, withdrew his service weapon and fired multiple shots in defense of that officer. >> reporter: both officers have been placed on routine administrative leave. police have not released the name of the suspect who was shot and killed. in the studio, linda so, abc2 news. maryland prosecutors say they want tougher anti-gang laws. the state's gang prosecution act went into effect back in 2007. in annapolis the state's top law enforcement officials including baltimore state's attorney patricia jessamy met with the house judiciary committee. prosecutors say the language of the act makes it too difficult to legally define a gang or its members and the punishment is not serious enough. >> we need a comprehensive statewide strategy to deal with gangs in our community. >> prosecutors also discussed ways to prevent gang activity. there's a vaccine now to protect us and your family against the h1n1 virus.

the fda approved a vaccine yesterday and expected to be delivered to us by mid-october. data from the university of maryland was used to license the vaccine. and data collected eight days after the first dose was administered showed no major side effects, just soreness and maybe some flu-like symptoms. researchers also learned that one dose is all you need to prevent the virus, not two like we originally thought. you know kids do a lot of crazy things but -- so they don't have to show their parents the report card. >> an 11-year-old in huntsville, alabama may have gone too far. he told his parents that he was kidnapped and forced into a car on his way home from school. he told them that he was able to escape, didn't have time to grab his backpack which had his report card in it. police were obviously suspicious of the story and the boy managing to escape with his band instrument but not his bookbag in something wasn't right. so his parents still haven't seen the report card this morning. the boy admitted he made up the

courage and quick thinking from an 8-year-old saved her family's life. two men broke into her louisville home and took her mother and two siblings hostage while the 8-year-old saw her family was being tied up and quickly grabbed the phone, hid in the closet, knew exactly what to do and who to call. >> i talked to a lady and told her everything and then she told me was there any way i could run to the door and lock it -- i said yes. i reached for the door. >> police came to the house a few minutes after the 911 call. the two suspects were shocked and surrendered as soon as police came inside. the 19-year-olds were arrested. the little girl is being hailed

officers encountered a suspect, and the suctd tried to stab an -- suspect tried to stab an officer in the back. the other officer saw it and shot in defense of that officer. >> reporter: both officers are on routine administrative leave. police haven't released the name of the suspect shot and killed. linda so, abc2 news. 6:48. new at 6:00 -- many police officers are trained to perform what is called a pit maneuver. we saw it happen last night near los angeles. state troopers used the pit maneuver several times to bring the car to a stop. the suspect kept trying to get away and you can see sparks shooting from the front wheels of the vehicle. officers took the man into custody. the latest on the corruption investigation at city hall. baltimore developer ronald lipscomb paid for a political survey for state delegate carter. carter ran against sheila dixon for mayor in 2007. that is according to court documents filed by defense

attorneys for councilwoman helen holton cown. carter denies knowledge of the poll saying she doesn't believe in them. councilwoman helen holton cown is charged with accepting a poll from lipscomb. her attorneys say she's being unfairly singled out. 6:48. you saw the story first on "good morning maryland" yesterday. a johns hopkins student killed a robber with a samurai sword when he found him in his house. >> police are now investigating if it was a case of self-defense. sherrie johnson is live with an update on this story. >> reporter: good morning. this morning baltimore city police have stepped up patrols here on university parkway near johns hopkins university and we've been out here all morning long and we've actually seen more and more officers driving through here. this comes after a rash of burglaries in this area and a student killed a suspected burglar yesterday. that suspected burglar, his name, has been identified as donald rice. a man with 29 convictions for breaking and entering. this is exclusive video we first brought you yesterday on

"good morning maryland." police say after he lunged at the student that's when the student attacked him with the sword and it's been an alarming wakeup call for others. >> this is the kind of thing that students at any urban campus need to be paying attention to. >> this area, it's unavoidable some things are going to happen. >> reporter: the dean of student life sent students a letter reminding them in case of a burglary call 911, do not attempt to confront the intruder but rather secure yourself in a locked area until police arrive. there's no word yet if charges will be filed in this case. reporting live in north baltimore, sherrie johnson, abc2 news. >> i want to stay on top of this story because the next couple of days will determine if the student is going to be be charged in the case. the student and roommate accounts of the incident could help them make this decision. >> people do have a right to defend themselves. samurai swords are not illegal in baltimore city. like going to the garage with a baseball bat.

to his policies. thursday president obama heads here. he's going to speak at a health reform rally at the university of maryland college park. it will be tomorrow. starts 11:00 a.m. at the comcast center. new at 6:00 -- the group environment maryland is going to release a new report in annapolis on the chesapeake bay. the group claims after 25 years the bay is still contaminated and that watermen are paying the steepest price. they say fisheries collapsed and hundreds of watermen have lost their jobs. the giant food store in the tollgate mall in bel air will close for good next month. that is according to the "baltimore business journal." the closure will affect almost 100 workers will will be given a chance to work at other stores in the area. company officials say there are no plans to close any other plants this year. any other giants, rather. the grocery store chain will close october 29th. no word now if anything will go in its place. and blockbuster making big covetbacks.

covetbacks -- cutbacks. the rental chain plans to cut down as many as 960 stores by the end of the year. we have not seen the locations yet but the company has struggled with competition from netflix and redbox, less expensive and more convenient. some good economic news. retailers are actually expecting a pretty good holiday shopping season. in fact toys "r" us is working on opening hundreds of holiday express shops. the company is planning on opening a free-standing shop in the mall in columbia. all the nation's babies "r" us stores including the ones in anne arundel county and baltimore county will feature holiday express stores as well. baltimore ravens linebacker ray lewis kicking off a new business venture. he was in hunt valley yesterday. for the groundbreaking for a new family entertainment and dining facility. it's located in the site of the old wal-mart at the hunt valley town center. we're told it will offer upscale bowling, live radio

broadcasts, private event rooms, restaurants, supports bar, even high-tech golf simulators. mvp entertainment is scheduled to open early in 2010. look forward to that. he's down but not out. at least not yet. less than one week before the season premiere "dancing with the stars" has its first casualty. former house majority leader tom delay, the texas politician who was injured during a rehearsal with a dance partner cheryl burke. he tweeted about it says old age catching up with me. may have a stress fracture in my foot. no worries. it will take more than that to keep me off the dance floor. doctors have to determine whether he can go back on show. that kicks off 21st on abc. in the video gaming world a 12-year-old boy reached rock star status. >> rocking out for a record. meet dylan. making his way to the guinness book of world records but playing guitar hero.
