5:38 pm
we are following breaking news out of dundalk southeast baltimore county where around 4:00 this afternoon we had a
5:39 pm
massive watermain break. it is a 72-inch main gushing water near the dundalk marine terminal. we have a live reporter on the scene. rose is standing by. >> reporter: it is an incredible amount of water. as you can see that's where the water is coming from. it is coming from burning highway. i'm in the middle of dundalk avenue and burning road and bell claire road. that's where the water is coming out past burning road. it is coming from the burning highway side. all you need to understand at this point is all the water coming down. it is you expensed it is a 72-inch main. we talked briefly with city of baltimore public works that 72-inch main, when it broke it also messed up other mains underneath. by doing that it just caused a wall of water to just come straight across the street. i mean from what we are understanding from some of the folks, it is at least knee-deep in some spots. across the street from where
5:40 pm
the water flowing is the box and save. if you go to your left, there is a box and save. it is like the logan village shopping center that has been completely flooded out with water. all the water has come across the street into that shopping center. behind the shopping center is a neighborhood. water has gone into the neighborhood there. it is about a foot deep in some spots. as you can see a lot of people in the neighborhood are standing out what's going on. a lot had to leave their homes because the water was getting in their yards. in some cases we have been told by some people that the water is knee-deep. if you look at a pickup truck it has gone inside the trucks. once again the shopper center has just been completely flooded out. there are cars there. it looks like the water has no sign of stopping. city of baltimore crews have been out here trying to find
5:41 pm
the switch that cuts the massive main off to at least alleviate the water coming here. once again the neighborhood that's downhill is getting a lot of water. a lot of folks are coming up and they are afraid their homes will be flooded. >> we have been able to talk by phone with some of the people in the community. we just got off the phone with one gentlemen. he and his five children and wife were trapped on the second floor of their home because water has started gushing in. we have been doing this a long time. have you ever seen a water main break this big? >> reporter: not one of this size. i have seen a 54-inch main that, as you may recall, that eerupted around knot avenue four or five years ago where water was gushing out. that was a puddle compared to what i'm seeing coming out here. 72-inches probably helps feed the industry down here. remember a lot of other things
5:42 pm
buckling down here. that was probably to help feedwater to this neck of the woods for the heavy industry to function here. it is justincredible. you can see city crews over to your right. there is city crews under that tree. the problem they have in trying to figure out a way to shut the water off is that the actual main that could shut it off could be a mile from here. that's the problem with finding what will shut it off. crews are prospecting trying to figure out where the main is. what the proper main is to control where they can shut it off. you randomly can't start shutting mains off because it will cause problems in other parts of the city. city crews are here. we have heard swift water rescue teams are also coming down here just in case, as you mentioned a man with five kids in the house, they want to be
5:43 pm
able have people on scene and stand by to get anybody. >> that's part of the challenge for officials here. this is a heavily residential area. stand by for a minute. we have some additional video that's come in from a viewer. we are encouraging viewers to send us video and call in. they have pictures that look like it is close to same location where you are roosevelt. it shows the water gushing. correct me if i'm wrong, i'm told this started around 4:00 this afternoon. this has now been going on two hours. >> reporter: it started around 4:00. the volume of water is unbelievable. i'll find out later from city officials the volume of water that's been coming out. it is incredible the fact that it flooded everything so quickly. we talked with somebody that said around the time it started it didn't look like much. you saw the water coming out.
5:44 pm
everybody was amazed. all of a sudden it kept growing and growing. once again it crosses the road into the shopping center and into the neighborhood that's behind it. which is causing all those problems for a lot of people. >> of course, we have had major road collapses there and who knows the structural damage this has all caused. we have to take a quick break. we'll come back to you. if you have on opportunity grab a resident and bring them over for a live interview. stay with us. explain.

5:50 pm
where do you begin? you have so much water coming out. they have to check the roads. they have to check the roads and there are flooded cars and things they have to deal with here. you can see some are in the corner a department of public works truck. they have been blocking traffic off there. a lot of truck traffic comes through here on its way back and forth to the port. this is something else we'll have to see to see how bad this water has caused problems and whether it has eroded roads or caused multiple problems here because of the watermain break. >> how much water was coming out? >> as much as 11,000 gallons a minute. you had to drive over to the area at the height of rush hour. how tough was it to get in over there? >> reporter: dundalk, if you don't need to be in this area you might as well stay out. they are stopping folks at

>> reporter: not at all. as i mentioned the main controls for this could be anything. the main main could be somewhere far away. that's one of the issues they have to deal w. they have to fine out exactly where this is. as you may recall, too, this is an old system. things change. roads move. roads change names. the mains could move. they could be sealed up by asphalt or something in the road. it is a difficult thing to try to find stuff to do. right now we have a lot of crews. matter of fact, from what we understand, they called pretty much every available crew and a lot of people that were off today to come in and handle this thing because of the volume of water coming down through here. this is something they have to take care of. they are not sure how it will affect water pressure for some of the neighborhoods, too. i would imagine a lot of the neighborhoods around here, water pressure will be minimal for a lot of folks because of the water coming through the streets.
