helping by waiving inspection fees of electrical work that has been completed and helping residents moving trash. >> the trucks are going through today and the rest of the week. they will pull up in the alleys and residents can put their debris in the backyard and we'll be happy to pick it up for them. >> reporter: dpw crews are still assessing the damage. but are still preparing to move boulders to reach the 72-inch main. while many of the homes were hit hard some residents like robert stone are just counting their blessings. >> we're hoping just the furnace needs to be replaced. >> reporter: robert stone said his 12-year-old was home alone during all of this and had to be evacuated by police. so you can imagine they are just happy she's ok, and all they have to replace is the furnace. 33 folks still without power and gas, five just without gas. a big concern, we heard it from a lot of people out here, they are worried about insurance

crashed his moped into a guardrail. and flipped down an embankment. the crash happened 3:00 this morning near frederick avenue and millington. rescuers used hoses to pull the man up the embankment. medics took him to the hospital. he's expected to be ok. police do not know what caused the crash. eight people including two children are recovering after a crash in west baltimore. a cab collided with an suv around 2:30 this morning at the intersection of north schroeder and west baltimore streets. police say the injured people squeezed themselves into one cab. the cab driver may be charged for steak -- taking so many at once. the suv driver wasn't hurt. a u.s. marine stationed in virginia accused of lying of being wounded to get freebies. david budois says he was

injured in afghanistan but marines say he was never there. he was stationed in quantico in 2006. before that, in okinawa, japan. he reportedly attended six rock concerts, two washington nationals game and a redskins game for free because of his story. a trial date is set for october 20th. police in anne arundel county need your help finding a bank robbery suspect. it happened thursday at the wachovia in ridge road in hanover. police say the suspect demanded money from the teller, took it and ran. you can see he had on a badge hanging from his neck. it's a little dark but you can make it out. if you have information call 1-866-7-lockup. a burglary suspect has been caught, also in anne arundel county. russell digarolemo was charged with theft and burglary. he was pulled over for a traffic violation when police discovered he had a stolen bank card and purse. police say the suspect walked into the unlocked back door of a home in the 200 block of lees

innovate so we don't just drift into the future. diana avillar reports. >> reporter: speaking at an upstate new york community college president obama outlined his administration's plan to invest in innovation. when we fail to invest in research we fail to invest in the future. >> reporter: he promised to make college more affordable, reduce taxes of start-up companies and kick start lagging investments in research and development. >> that's why i set a goal of putting a full 3% of our gross domestic product into research and development. >> reporter: the speech was delivered the same day the conference board's monthly report was published. its index of leading economic indicators rose .6% in august, continuing the longest stretch of gains in five years. the board reports consumer demand is going up and inventories are falling. stock prices are steadily increasing. even the public's expectations are trending up.

swine flu vaccine to come. >> we're helping people here on the university of maryland baltimore campus get coverage for seasonal flu and also highlighting the fact that pharmacists now can also provide the immunizations. >> reporter: meanwhile, u.s. health officials ordered more swine flu vaccine bringing the number to 251 million doses. recycling is up in baltimore city. city leaders say trucks are picking up 53% more recyclables since cutting back on trash collection and increased recycling pickups in july. the city hauled away an average of 8,000 tons of garbage. now the city is picking up an average of 5,700 tons of garbage and almost 1,000 tons of recyclables. garbage down, recyclables up. the new plan exceeded expectations. the bureau of solid waste projected picking up 40% more recyclables after a year. it passed that number in just weeks. the sun always shines a lot

boat, i don't see a stuffed cow. i think we can rule it out. right now just a nice day to be out, a nice day to be on the water and great day to wrap up summer 2009. summer flew by for me at least. 76 the current temperature at bwi marshall. humidity 52% right now. so all in all pretty nice-looking afternoon. bel air now, elementary school, 73 degrees. feels like 77. a little bit of humidity out there. that did make it feel a bit milder today. this morning temperatures were cool. we dropped to 49 at one point. as you see on the low temperature map from early this morning. but most of us were warmer. there were a few spots north of the pennsylvania line, on sunday morning, upper 30s. yeah, that was a little pra mature even for the edge of fall. high temperatures today, not bad, nice rebound into the mid to upper 70s. in fact 80 in winchester, virginia. 77 in easton. dover, delaware, 75. we've got a nice little break in the clouds now across

baltimore. if you look closely you see that sort of nice little gap in cloud cover. we got some blue sky out there, great afternoon for everybody to be out, maybe on the soccer practice field, football practice field, whatever the case is. nice day to that. we have more active weather brewing off to the west this afternoon. and this particular system pretty stalled out here, continues to bring rain up and down the appalachian trail, you can say. as a matter of fact, west virginia getting soaked with good rain but none of that really for maryland, just additional cloud cover. the other thing we're watching here, a southerly flow developing coming in off the carolinas and this will be our best chance for rain. moisture coming up out of the south across maryland. could bring us showers. i think the best chance for rain comes late in the day tomorrow. then again i think through the day on wednesday. other than that the week looks relatively dry at least until we get into the weekend. forecast scenario now, look for increasing clouds tomorrow but no real additional chance for rain until we get into the late in the day tomorrow. wednesday, i think another day

"2 your health" -- research shows that most emergency rooms don't have the special equipment and supplies needed to treat your children. in response to that, leading officials on pediatric care released new guidelines on how to better prepare emergency departments nationwide for kids. in 2006 the institute of medicine released a report that found only 6 of% of u.s. emergency rooms had all of the necessary equipment, medications and supplies to properly care for children. now a group of top pediatric health care officials unveiled new guidelines for staff at emergency departments across the country. so they could be better prepared to treat the needs of younger patients. though children make up 20% of emergency room visits only 18% of emergency rooms in the united states currentlily have a physician coordinator to address the needs of pediatric

city. who is likely to budge and which unions won't? >> and dundalk, how people are coping there. it's stopping traffic. what is getting all the attention in harford county? that and baltimore's most accurate forecast coming up at 5:30. >> thank you. we go to central new jersey where six people were hurt in an early-morning crash today. a greyhound bus crashed with a tractor-trailer on the new jersey turnpike in cranbury. the bus driver was trapped, had to be rescued, she was rushed to the hospital. the tractor-trailer driver wasn't hurt. a texas swim team found themselves in treacherous waters today. their bus crashed and went into a lake about 20 miles outside of dallas. the bus stayed upright long enough for everyone to escape through the back door. the driver and five students went to the hospital as a precaution. police are still investigating the crash. check this out, a man takes down a bank robber in wisconsin. this husband worried for his wife's safety and mped on to the would-be thief's back. you can see she's afraid to
