there? he was placed on probation after he broke into her apartment and poured bleach on her clothes. >> she was a sweet girl going places. very quiet. kept to herself. wouldn't probably hurt a fly. >> reporter: skowran is believed to be driving a 2003 black honda civic with maryland plates 8dxx66. again, he's from pasadena but currently residing near boston. in the studio, linda so, abc2 news. 6:31. people in park heights are now set to learn more about plans for a roundabout in their communities. city officials are hoping it will ease traffic at the busy intersection of park heights, druid park avenue and also reisterstown road. residents there have complained for years about speeding cars and earlier this month a man was killed when his van went airborne and slammed into four parked cars. will hanna is the president of the park circle improvement association and he supports this idea.

>> we think the flow of traffic here would be much better and also decrease the speed here going into the circle. >> he says funding has already been approved and residents will have their say at a community forum, coming up thursday night. officials from the department of transportation and city council expected to attend this forum. a u.s. marine stationed in virginia is accused of lying about being wounded in come watt to -- combat to get freebies. the marine corps says sergeant david buddha told police he were wounded in afghanistan but the marines say he was never there. he was assigned to the marine corps -- actually, in virginia back in 2006. six years before that he was stationed in japan. boudeau attended several concerts and ballgames for free because of that story. his trial date is set for october 20th. five people gathered to

watch a now healthy sea turtle return to its national natural habitat. he's so cute. the turtle was admitted to the national aquarium in july of 2008 with nearly 10 pounds of organisms infecting its shell. sea turtles are already endangered so the aquarium held heal the turtle and they called him flight and release. now he's going to be tracked by a satellite tag. loggerhead turtles is the 82nd animal helped by the aquarium rescue program. a ray of sunshine is filling the farm fields here in baltimore and harford counties and people are slowing down to take a look. zach roads says he normally grows soybeans but decided to try sunflowers this year. he's the third generation of his family to work at the farm.

the sunflower crop was planted in mid-july. covers about 600 acres. they are being sold as bird seed. they are full blown for a few more weeks and then they will be back next july. beautiful. here's a man you definitely do not want to mess with. he was sleeping in his south florida home in the buff, yes. that man, in the buff when a robber came into his home. the 91-year-old world war ii veteran grabbed his gun while his dog attacked the robber and the 91-year-old man held the 26-year-old at gunpoint until the police showed up. the robber was arrested and the 91-year-old was not hurt. just picture that. diamonds might be a girl's best friend but for one woman it might be her shoes. >> she holds the world record and proves you can never have too many pairs of shoes. new guidelines announced for the swine flu vaccine that could have you taking your child to the doctor more than once this winter. 6:34.

woman is a step above the rest when it comes to loving shoes. her obsession has landed her in a record books. room after room in her house is filled with shoes. and not the kind you wear on your feet. we're talking about a shoe table, shoe chairs, shoe phone, shoe rupg, you name it, she probably has a shoe version of it in her house. you see that shoe chandelier? >> it's a museum. that everything in the house that possibly can, shoe related is shoe related. i used to buy everything i saw that was a shoe. then the last couple years i just buy the things that are really unique. because it's getting overwhelming. there's not enough room in my house. >> i bet not. back in 2006 she had 7,765 shoe items and now she says the number is well over 11,000. 11,000. she said she's ready to submit it to the record books. i suspect she'll win. >> you think? i think so. how many shoes are in your closet? round it off.

apparent self inflicted wound. police found the body of the ex-girlfriend giselle rodriguez late yesterday morning in an apartment near boston. the two apparently had a rocky relationship. rodriguez had a restraining order against skowran and back in july he was placed on probation and was required to attend an anger management class after he broke into her apartment and poured bleach on her clothes. his neighbors said she last saw him about a week ago. >> probation officer came looking for him. and they left their card. and it fell on the ground so i taped it to his door. so he would know. and he just took it and looked at it and just walked away. >> reporter: again, police say skowran was found dead at a virginia motel. he died from an apparent self-inflecked gunshot wound. in the studio, linda so, abc2 news. to a story you'll only see on abc2 news. we have a tractor-trailer driver now being treated at shock trauma after his rig overturned on the beltway. investigators tell our our overnight photographer pete "on

the street" o'neill that the rig somehow flipped near the 702 around 11:00 last night. the tractor-trailer was the only vehicle involved in this crash. the road was reopened shortly after the wreck. plans to close baltimore city's huge budget gap could be held up in a dispute with the city's fire and police departments. so this week the board of estimates is expected to approve a plan to furlough every city employee for at least five days. the head of the city police union has said the union has a clause in its contract stating that officers cannot be furloughed. the head of the city's firefighters union says the fire chief thinks furloughs and layoffs layoffs would lead to the closures of eight to 10 fire companies. negotiations ongoing between the mayor's staff and unions. the city council president says with or without furloughs the police and fire unions will have to find a way to reduce their budgets just like every other city agency. >> i feel very confident that they will make cost savings in line with what each agency has

been asked to do. >> the overall plan is expected to be approved wednesday but includes a provision that will allow the mayor to continue negotiations with the police and fire unions. the deadline for those negotiations should be finished by october. the 21st. we want your two cents. because of these tough economic times should police officers and firefighters take furloughs? log on to our web site now at abc2news.com and take a look at the right side of the home page to vote in our on-line poll. time now 6:49. dozens of baltimore city cop cars are out of commission this morning and tainted fuel maying the cause. authorities say it looks like diesel was accidently mixed with gas at a city fueling station but officials are waiting for test results to be sure. so far 68 police cars have been disabled. a city police spokesperson says the department has enough vehicles that operations should not be affected. the city is now draining the fuel from the affected vehicles, replacing the fuel filters and cleaning out the

fuel injectors. some have already been fixed this morning. if you're looking for a new business to launch how would you like to buy a piece of history? baltimore's historic senator. the city began soliciting proposals for the operation for the baltimore landmark. the moviehouse which opened back in 1939 is listed on the national registry of historic places. baltimore took over the theater's mortgage this spring after the longtime owner defaulted on the loan. the city took ownership of the theater after it failed to sell at auction. if you get ready to board amtrak, marc or light rail you're warned to be a little patient. >> federal officials are warning that mass transit can be vulnerable to terrorist attacks. and we're going to send it now to sherrie johnson. she joins us live. >> reporter: good morning. mass transit systems all across the country and in baltimore at penn station are warned to beef up security patrols. this comes after authorities say that a man was charged with

trying to detonate backpack bombs on new york city trains. now, police believe that he's a part of an al-qaeda terror cell network. this person and two others were arrested over the weekend. one of the men was working with the fbi but according to court documents investigators say he turned around and warned other suspects that the government was monitoring them. now, authorities are trying to figure out if one of the suspects was part of a larger terror plot or trying to help federal investigators. >> the government asks to search his home. he consents. to a search of his home. they asked to take a dna sample. he consents to a dna sample. they asked him for more oral statements. he waives his miranda rights, gives an oral statement. >> reporter: the suspects are behind bars at this time. they have a hearing on thursday. reporting live at penn station, sherrie johnson, abc2 news. the 72-inch watermain that broke on friday, it could be a long time before life returns back to normal for neighbors in

dundalk. they are continuing to clean up after that pipe burst flooding out their homes, water logging and mud covering items. they are drying out on the lawns but so much had to be thrown away. now the big worry, dealing with the mold that started to grow. how much the insurance companies are going to reimburse them for all the damage. >> devastating. i opened up my doors and watched my refrigerator float by under here, entertainment center floating the other way. it's -- and i couldn't come down here. to see more because it was all full of water. the smell is starting to creep through the floor. you got to keep the windows open just to keep it ventilated. >> public works crews will bring in heavy pieces of equipment to excavate. and broening highway could be closed for a month as crews work to fix the pipes. one swine flu shot will protect most children but in your child, if your child is under 10 they need two shots, three weeks apart. the findings show that one shot

of the new vaccine provides older children with the protection within 10 days, just as standard flu vaccines do. younger children need two shots because they don't mount as potent as the immune response to the new vaccine. duke university researchers are developing a test to determine with a mere drop of blood who will get the influenza before the sniffling and fever ever set in. and they are turning to hundreds of dormitory dwellings, first-year students, to see if this works. students report daily whether they have the cold or flu symptoms. if they do a team test, not just -- but also for hallmates who might be incubating the infection. at this point you know that tanning is not healthy but officials in howard county, want to make it illegal.

today a county executive will propose a complete ban on the use of indoor tanning beds for minors. former miss maryland from 2006 will join the county executive. she was actually diagnosed with skin cancer from indoor tanning beds. the proposal will be sent to howard county for the board of health for their approval. for the third year in a row now the u.s. census bureau shows that maryland had the highest median income level, median household in maryland pulls in more than $70,000 but that doesn't mean folks are spending a lot of money. compare this, if you will, a dozen eggs will cost you 45 cents more in we theseda -- bethesda compared with tupalo, mississippi. burglars did not know who they were up against when they decided to rob who they thought was a frail 88-year-old man. >> the new jersey man says a woman came to his door posing as a member of a church across the street. she came into his house but he was not interested. so he turned her away.
