own safety at risk and ran into a burning building to help save a woman trapped inside. pete "on the street" o'neal captured this exclusive video of firefighters racing to the scene for the rescue. it happened before 1:00 this morning on sheldon avenue in northeast baltimore. the two teens were sitting on the stoop, smelled a strong odor of smoke. that's when they raced upstairs and tried to help. it was crazy, man, i thought we were going to die, man. i know the lady and i couldn't even recognize her, how burnt she was. >> reporter: the teens became instant neighborhood heroes. several girls came up and gave mony hawks a hug for what he and his friend nick did to help save the woman. meanwhile, nick suffered smoke inhalation during the rescue. one firefighter suffered minor injuries. as for the woman, she suffered some pretty bad burns and medics had to take her to the burn center. ? the student -- in the studio, linda so, abc2 news. a man accused of dousing his grandmother with alcohol

and setting her on fire now charged with first degree murder. police say tyron mason attacked 85-year-old ethel hebderson on her home in poplar grove street in west baltimore in march because she refused to give him money. henderson died in june at hopkins bayview. the charge against mason then went from attempted murder to murder. 5:32. baltimore county police have two people in custody in connection with the murder of a 74-year-old man. the dod l body of david weeks was found in his home this past friday and now a woman and man who were renting a room from him are accused of killing him. police say weeks planned to have the couple evicted on friday. instead a relative found his body inside the home. >> i would just come over and say, how's your day going? just having him being gone is hard. >> the renters michael dimatti and his girlfriend, erin steffy

are charged with first degree murder. the medical examiner didn't specify whether a pillow and duct tape that were wrapped around his head are what led to his death. now the ongoing issues plaguing baltimore mayor sheila dixon. her lawyers now must prepare for the possibility of two separate criminal trials. the mayor faces theft charges for allegedly stealing gift cards from needy families. she will go on trial on those charges in six weeks. but her attorneys wanted to lay the other -- want to delay the other trial where she faces perjury charges. in that indictment the mayor is accused of gifts from her boyfriend, developer ronald lipscomb. the attorneys are trying to have those charges thrown out. 5:34. on this october 1st -- state officials plan to implement silver alert. it's to find missing seniors with cognitive disorders. and congressman elijah cummings will screen michael moore's latest film "capitalism, a love

5:39. good morning. let's take you back in time to yesterday. it was a really interesting day. essentially, if you're looking at the cloud cover, time lapse from summit ridge in mount airy. the temperatures were down in the low 60s outside the beltway. beautiful scenery but the clouds did start to break up late in the day. we were mostly clear overnight. some clouds have moved in over the last couple of hours but that allowed temperatures to drop down to 42 in ellicott city. 45 in monkton. joppa is 48. same across the bay in chestertown. we have a look at the satellite imagery, again, a few clouds passing through early this morning but the skies should turn mostly sunny this afternoon, albeit still chilly, below normal with a two-degree guaranteed high of 67 degrees. 5:40 now. let's see what's happening on the roads. traffic is running smoothly on the major roads. southbound 95 headed to the capitol beltway traffic is moving about with no problems.

opened the door fire started to come out of the door. she was on fire. the bed was on fire. everything was on fire. >> reporter: the teens became instant neighborhood heroes. several girls came up and gave mony hawks a hug for what he and his friend nick did to save the woman. his friend nick suffered smoke inhalation during the rescue. one firefighter suffered minor injuries. investigators are still working on the cause of the fire. as for the woman, she suffered pretty bad burns and medics had to take her to the burn center. in the studio, linda so, abc2 news. here's a look at some of the other top stories abc2 news is working on for you on this thursday morning. two people are in the hospital right now recovering from a stabbing. police tell our our overnight photographer pete "on the street" o'neill a woman was attacked at knifepoint as she walked around lafayette street at midnight but wasn't going to be a victim. they say she took the knife and stabbed her attack are in the neck. they are both in the hospital he's under arrest. police say they are also investigating two other stabbings that happened in the

area. 45:45. there are a lot of loss going into effect today. listen up. starting today if you are caught texting while driving you could face a fine of up to $500. the texting while driving ban went into effect across the state of maryland at midnight. but it doesn't cover reading text messages or talking on your phone. it's only just if you're looking at those -- that is all still legal. baltimore's automated speed monitoring program begins today. dozens of speed cameras will be up around the city. for the first month drivers who exceed the speed limit by at least 12 miles per hour around school zones will get a warning in the mail but after that you are subject to a $40 ticket. plus, a new law goes into effect requiring teen drivers to wait another three months to get a provisional and full license. also teens with repeat moving violations will face tougher pedges. this all starts today. believe it or not many of you are starting your christmas shopping. wal-mart wants to jumpstart

shorts day trips to find some of the peak fall foliage. we have leaves turning in baltimore county. if you watched us in the eastern sore, 45 easton. maybe you have leaves starting to turn. in hunt valley up through the hereford zone, starting to get color up there. it's a short time until we really start to look like fall rather than just feeling like fall. this morning, widespread 40s and low 50s across the eastern seaboard. heading back west of pittsburgh, it's 41. 30s in the blue shading into the ohio valley where they have cleared out. you can see the clearing on the satellite, clouds still left over back into the mountains. a few passing overhead as we head through this morning but we're going to have a much drier day in tap. looks like more sunshine will dominate, with the forecast highlighting clear skies through tonight. tomorrow morning the clouds race back in. there may be showers. this is a warm front. showers passing in the morning to our west. we may have an afternoon shower pop up. the better chance is saturday with warmer temperatures. today, downtown baltimore, clearing skies, still 67 degrees.
