motive, no suspects, and few leads. if anyone has any information about this crime, you're asked to call the baltimore county police. a city police officer is recovering tonight after being dragged five blocks by a car this afternoon. it happened just after noon on mount street in west baltimore. police say ricky hughes, a wanted suspect, was supposed to meet with officers but became suspicious, ran away and got into his car. one officer reached into the vehicle and tried to grab the keys, but hughes drove off, dragging the officer with him. another officer fired several shots, shooting out the car's back window. the injured officer is being treated at shock trauma. police have not released his name or the name of that suspect. 25 cities and states including maryland have ordered the vaccine for the h1n1 virus. the vaccine should be out next week. the first doses will be in the form of a nasal spray which is safe for those ages 2 to 49 who

are not pregnant. women will receive or pregnant women will seve a shot. health care workers will also be vaccinated. health officials released 300,000 doses of tamiflu to help states treat children. president barack obama says iran has two weeks to allow international inspectors into a nuclear fuel plant that has been a secret until recently. the president says iran must take steps to prove the program is for peaceful purposes and not an effort to pursue nuclear weapons. these comments were made at the white house after iranian officials met in geneva with representatives of the u.s. and five other world powers. elizabeth smart was 14 years old when they was kidnapped from her home in 2002. nine months later, she was rescued. that was seven years ago. now smart is talking about her horrifying ordeal. the 21-year-old testified in salt lake city today as part of

a competency hearing for brian mitchell them says mitchell raped her three to four times a day during her nine months in captivity and she says she was told she would be killed if she yelled or tried to escape. >> no idea what she had gone through, so much out there. >> mitchell has been diagnosed with delusional disorder. he has twice been found incompetent to stand trial. there will be more testimony from other witnesses in november before the judge determines whether he is competent to stand trial. today the hero pilot of miracle on the hudson, captain chelsea sully sullenberger is back in the cockpit. sullenberger and his first officer jeffrey skye flew the same route from la guardia airport to charlotte, north carolina. >> i felt an obligation to my profession to my company to come back. it is my profession. u.s. airways family is my family. >> this is their first flight together since a bird strike

tonight brian kuebler tells us who police are hoping to get off the streets. >> reporter: abc 2 is working keep your community safe. we're highlighting recent crimes each week, hoping to bring criminals to justice. this week we're focusing on baltimore city and baltimore county. city police are searching for a man who kidnapped and raped a woman last week in west baltimore. the woman said she was approached by a man at the bus stop on the corner of park heights avenue and cold spring lane. he forced her at didn't paine to a nearby home, where he assaulted her. the victim was not hurt and was able to help police draw a sketch of her attacker. anyone with information asked to call city police. and baltimore county police are looking for some unusual items stolen from a home. two hand grenades and several guns taken from the home. last week. police believe the grenades could be live and are asking anyone with information to call

concern over manufacturing triggered a huge selloff on wall street today, the dow off more than 200 points, the nasdaq dropped 64. the s&p off 27. comcast among the stocks closing down today following reports the cable giant is in preliminary talks to buy up to 50% of nbc universal. that would increase its ownership of the tv shows and movies on its cable system. general electric owns 80% of nbc universal. sources say ge has been talk to several groups and order to unload part of the entertainment unit. how about a free night at a

into your health a new report says hospitals in maryland and across the country could face some major challenges with h1n1. a new study says if 35% of americans get the virus, we could run out of hospital beds. abc 2 news kelly swoopes with the story. >> reporter: giving out the seasonal flu vaccine is nothing new. medical professionals do 2 every year. but this year somehow health experts worry the h1n1 flu could post some serious problems for the country. >> we have to reach different populations than we normally do with niece flu vaccines in a shorter period of time. young adults, for example, only about a quarter of the normally get a seasonal flu vaccine, they're among the highest risks groups for this virus. >> jeff leavy executive

director says a new report is alarming. >> our key finding around hospital beds it that we'll see a surge and increase in the band as the pandemic peaks. >> according to numbers, 15 states including maryland would exceed their hospital bed capacity at the peak, about eight weeks. >> about 27,000 people in maryland may need to be hospitalized if 35% of americans get sick from the h1n1 flu virus. >> local and state health departments have lost 15,000 jobs in the last two years. and that could have a huge impact. it will be very, very challenging for the health care system if a large number of people or are ill at one particular time. we're hoping to space this out through some of our interventions, so that the health care system can cope. >> news that the vaccine is on the way is encouraging. but health officials say the clock is ticking. >> this is the largest vaccination program the united states has ever attempted to undertake. we're trying to ultimately

this afternoon. but what will really watching is that system right there. what we'll be find something tonight this system will slide over the top of the region, and give us a chance for clouds later tonight, probably after midnight. that's when they'll work into the region. the majority of the rainfall will pass to the northwest of us. shouldn't really affect us. but a frontal system right through that region there, that will bring some showers in during the day on saturday. but the thing is moving to quickly that by saturday afternoon, looks like thing will be clearing up. right now nothing on maryland's most powerful radar. nice clear scan, should stay that way until tomorrow evening. right now 59. glenwood 58. 60 in laurel. over in chestertown, 64. and down in annapolis right now 64 degrees. as far as our forecast, watch the timing of this whole system because we've got the mostly clear skies tonight. at least for the next couple hours. as we go flew the overnight

period, few clouds move into the region. majority of the rainfall moved north of us. then on saturday it moves through the region but as you can see it's an early morning situation. by saturday midday or so, the shower activity will be off the eastern seaboard so things will be looking okay for saturday and sunday, looking like a dynamite day. your forecast for the overnight period, gradually increasing clouds, clouds will move in probably about midnight. still on the cool side, 52 for the low. during the day tomorrow, a pretty nice day if you don't mind being mostly cloudy. but it's going to be warmer, high tomorrow 72 degrees. but pm showers moving in right now looks like our best chance for light scattered showers would be sometime like 5:00 in the afternoon on the extended outlook. scattered showers into saturday but that looks a lot worse than what it's going to be. most of that rainfall and the clouds will be in the early portion of the day with the afternoon looking pretty good. sunday, monday looking like sunshine. temperatures getting into the low 70s. tuesday a few scattered showers, rainfall also on wednesday, thursday partly

cloudy, and 69 degrees. i'll be back at 6 with more on the weather. >> thank you, norm. a handful of states now allow residents it save water and money by recycling some waste water. as carla wohl us, the systems can cost from 100 bucks to many thousands. >> reporter: after an environmentalist ed begley jr. is practicing what he preaches, recycling the water he uses to wash up to also water his garden. he is installed what is called a gray water system. instead of going into the sewer, water from his bath, shower and laundry is pumped through an elaborate of filters. >> it takes out a lot of hair and lint and particles. >> if goes through coal and past a uv light to kill bacteria. before the water is stored in had been underground holding tank. how clean is this water, then? >> i'm sad to say it's probably cleaner than 50% of the world's

population drinks. so i'm not going to drink it but i use it in my corn, tomatoes and fruit trees. >> the average american uses about 100 gallons of water a day. as much as 80% of that is gray water. water all the more precious in regions hard hit by drought. art has been teaching people how to install gray water systems for 20 years. he says they don't have to be expense you've. >> you can install a laundry to landscape gray water system yourself in an afternoon, with parts that cost less than $100. >> a tube sends water from the washing machine into the yard where it's filtered through mulch so every time you do your laundry, you water your plants. it's estimated a basic system could save a typical household more than 20,000 gallons of water a year. with his system, begley hopes to do even better, saving both money and the environment. carla wohl, abc news, los

airy. now as jeff hager reports, 48- year-old john thompson remains behind bars, facing a series of charges. >> reporter: from his advantage point on his front porch across the street, neighbors rushed to pull every-year-old bill thompson from the burning home. >> we sat in this chair until they put him in the ambulance. >> thompson's son john crawled out of the smoke-filled home first, after they kicked in the door. then he attempted to run away. investigators would later learn his son had become an unwelcomed visitor and after months of trashing the family's home, his father had decided to evict him. >> had enough, i guess words were exchanged that night. john thompson went out on reports set trash on fire. >> residents in the area
