you make your way southbound headed towards the top side of the beltway. good thing, we're incident free and the couple of crashes we had around the area have already been cleared. but we have a gas leak in glen burnie, if you're headed to the courthouse, know that route 648 near ritchie highway remains closed at this time. in cockeysville southbound york road, the right lane is taken away at beaver run lane because of a watermain break utility repair. jfx at cold spring lane, traffic is beginning to build southbound but still no problems on the jfx. back to you. 6:32. a task we all hate to do so when a man came to her door offering to shovel she said ok. >> that man is behind bars and she's recovering in the hospital. linda so is in the studio with details. >> reporter: police say the man knocked on the woman's door in canton and offered to help but what happened after that landed the man behind bars. police say 19-year-old donald vaughn of whitestone, virginia, was arrested and charged with first degree rape and attempted

murder. on saturday, during the height of the storm police say vaughn asked the 26-year-old woman if he could shovel snow at her home in the 800 block of south kenwood avenue, she said yes and paid him. moments later police say he came back and forced his way into the house. he attacked the woman with the kitchen knife, slit her throat and raped her. neighbors say they saw the man asking people in the neighborhood if they wanted help shoveling. >> he came up to me, i was by myself, he was like, hey, you need help? i was like, no thanks. he just hung around. my neighbor stepped in because he saw this guy approaching me. that's when he just stepped away. >> police say vaughn was in baltimore visiting family for the holidays. a virginia newspaper is reporting he is a prime suspect in two other recent rapes there. vaughn was under surveillance while police waited for evidence to come back. inned the studio, linda so, abc2 news. time is 6:33. we have an awful story from new

york city to tell you about. a woman and her baby died and two emts are now suspended because police say they refused to help her. the pregnant woman collapsed in the coffee shop where the two men were on break. witnesses say the two men told employees to call 911 when they were asked to help the 25-year-old woman. >> the sister was in the back dying. if they would just have helped, do something, there is the possibility she would still be alive today. >> they were sitting there having coffee. how can they be burnt out? they are human beings. somebody is dying down the street and they say help them and they just sat there. >> the two emts are suspended without pay while the charges are investigated. in a case of david versus goliath apparel giant north face is suing a college student for attract trairk inforty nine

westbound is where they have the snow this morning. in reference to baltimore we get the clouds overshooting the mountains. this is part of an upper level system. more snow back towards indianapolis, chicago, haven't checked on delays but that system is providing delays for us but i don't think that system is going to cross the mountains. another blizzard in the rockies and upper midwest. it will be snow across the northern plain, perhaps western great lakes, christmas morning we get ice. this looks like it could be a mess christmas morning. 36 today, remaining mostly cloudy, 36 our 2-degree guarantee. we go back to the re-freeze and 21 overnight. for tomorrow, after an icy start, sunshine carries us to a cooler high of 33. that christmas forecast coming up in a moment. right now kim brown has a look at traffic. >> thank you. volume is starting to pick up around the area, around the outer loop of the beltway, southbound 95 through the whitemarsh boulevard area and here at the harrisburg expressway, approaching the top side of the beltway, one crash in baltimore city, that is

going to be west franklin at north mount street. and we have watermain breaks around the area, route 140 and glen falls road, that's in reisterstown. could be icy in that area as well. and towson, still cal pens avenue closed between concordia and brook hollow. and the city cameras, key highway and covington, traffic still qielt in both directions. snow brings out the best in people. those willing to shovel, those who push cars out. >> who make meals for those who are homebound, but linda so is live to tell us about the worst in people that happened during the huge storm. she's live in the studio. >> reporter: police say a man who was presenting himself as a good neighbor was going around asking people if they needed help clearing the snow. when one woman took him up on his offer it allegedly led to a brutal attack. police say 19-year-old donald vaughn of whitestone, virginia,

news. 6:48. police in baltimore are looking for a suspect in the shooting death of a soldier home on holiday leave. he survived a tour of duty in afghanistan only to be shot and killed in southwest baltimore. this happened sunday night. 22-year-old clifford williams was found in the 600 block of south wickman road. around 11:30 last night, coming home from the grocery store, shopping with his wife when he was shot. he was taken to the hospital where he died. at this point police have no idea why this happened. his wife, who was in the car was not injured. the anne arundel county council approved a zoning change that allows a casino to be built right next to the arundel mills mall. slots supporters say the county needs the money. opponents say the mall is the wrong location for a casino and they believe when voters approve the slots referendum they thought the casino would be placed at laurel park racetrack. well, last night, the head of the maryland jockey club says the slots at arundel mills could mean the end to laurel park. >> it's been here 200 years, there's 15,000, 20,000 jobs,

the future is not bright at all. and this may be the death knell of it. >> they are even talking about the death of the belmont stakes up in new york. that track is in trouble. county executive john leopold could approve the slots bill as soon as today and people who live near the mall are trying to collect signatures to force a referendum to keep slots out. they have 45 days to collect the signatures from county voters. 6:50. a firefighter was hurt while battling a two-alarm fire. this happened in southeast baltimore. the fire broke out shortly after 9:00 last night in the 400 block of south robinson street. this home is believed to be vacant. the firefighter who was hurt is expected to be ok. and investigators now are still trying to determine what started this fire in the first place. since the weekend it's been all about digging out of snow, not just here but also up and down the east coast. in baltimore county crews say they made a quick work not only of the main roads but also a lot of the side streets and

that made it easier for folks to finish their shoferlg and salting. they still even had a chance to play a little bit, giving a pool toy, one woman says, a new winter job. there are still a few areas around here that are still waiting to be completely cleared in this area. we'll have to wait and see. county officials hope to have them done by today. to the city now, snow plow treatment out there yesterday, many of them for the first time since the snow hit. and the delay in getting to the streets is making removal difficult. >> we are basically making it safe to travel and we're salting but we -- they may not see asphalt. >> the first time they've been through. as you can see we needed them to come through and they didn't get much up. >> also reminding residents to clear their sidewalks. the maryland zoo in baltimore will remain closed through christmas because of the weekend's huge snowstorm. the zoo is tentatively set to reopen 10:00 a.m. on saturday. not a bad thing to do after christmas.

the president of the zoo says while polar bears are having a good time many of the other animals can't go outside in the cold weather. this weekend's storm was terrible timing for malls and shoppers but both are making up for lost time. huge crowds turned out to towson town center, cramming into stores to finish up all the shopping. many planned to do it on saturday and sunday. many retailers were stacked wall to wall with customers who say despite the snow they still would have waited until the last minute anyway. >> absolutely. i thrive on the procrastination. this is still a little early. i have until thursday night so i'm good. >> towson town center, whitemarsh mall and mall at columbia and owings mills mall, all extending shopping hours today and tomorrow. they will be open until midnight to try to make up for some of the money lost because of the snowstorm. anybody who was with us over the weekend knows what this picture is. it was a picture of people who were stranded on an air jamaica

flight sitting on a tarmac at bwi marshall for more than eight hours. but, because of it and similar scenes like it the government stepped in with some new rules. if a packed plane is stranded for more than three hours the u.s. transportation department said airlines must get passengers off of that plane. under the new rules which go into effect at 120 days, couldn't they do it now? airlines must also provide food and water two hours into a delay. and today some ravens are going to be out there getting into the holiday spirit. the salvation army will begin distributing donations to more than a thousand needy families. a ribbon cutting will be held this morning to honor the volunteers and kickoff distribution, a lot of ravens will be out there and expected to be at the site to hand out donations. let's dance. >> ho, ho, ho, sheriff john w. anderson and deputies and employees of the baltimore city sheriff's office wish all of you a very merry christmas! ♪

we wish you a merry christmas♪ >> dancing elves. it's great. baltimore city's sheriff's department now wishing everyone a merry christmas. look at the robot. deputies collected money from their fellow officers and purchased a bunch of gifts. this is all for the abc2 news kinder time toy drive. we do this every year and so do they. thank you for their help. the celebration was at the mitchell courthouse downtown. the toys will be distributed at 6:30 tonight. you still have time to drop them off. they are low this year, the gifts. so all you have to do is bring a gift unwrapped to our studios, 6400 york road. we would be happy to deliver them to kids around our area. this evening. for a parkville couple christmas arrived early. sugar bear is back. the little pug we've been asking you to keep an eye out for after getting lost in the snow this weekend. >> who wouldn't miss that face? yesterday there was a knock at the door and sugar bear came home. a snow plow driver spotted the pug stepping on to the beltway saturday night around 11:00.

and the 8-year-old pug, 19 pounds, limps when she runs. apparently sugar bear hates the cold so when mom was shoveling a trail she turned her back and sugar bear got confused and went on a different trail. and the mom, marissa, followed the trail all the way to harford road, found the paw trints and then they disappeared but the good news, they are back together. let's see, you have a bar, you have food, a long runway, easy access to your honeymoon trip. >> sounds perfect, right? for shawna hodge who waited at the tampa international airport holding the sign with the name of her true love. cody beckwith, her soldier husband-to-be was stuck in baltimore because of the snow. finally made a midnight flight to florida. so shawna decided let's just take the wedding to the airport. let's go to gate c. there they were. 15 minutes after touching down they said i do. >> cody, do you take shawna michelle hodge to be your lawful wedded wife? >> i do.
