most flurries in through western maryland with heavier snow squalls in the mountaintops. for us, overcast in the last hour, partly cloudy to mostly cloudy with temperatures struggling to get back near freezing chance of flurries and gusty winds into the afternoon. 5:30. let's check the roads with kim. >> ice is a possibility this morning. we have reports of icy patches in joppatowne, philadelphia road at joppa farm road. use caution if you have to travel there. and also wind warnings still in effect at the key and bay bridges. as we look at the outer loop you will see traffic starting to build at liberty road as you make your way down towards the route 40 interchange. also expect the outer loop to be closed between route 10 and hawkins point road. this is in effect until february 12th. two-way traffic gets by on the inner loop. but expect some major delays there. as we peek downtown at the bromo tower traffic looks great through baltimore. back to you. new rules are going to be in place when you fly within the united states and when you fly into the united states. just yesterday a man slipped through security at newark

airport in new jersey so this morning police are still looking for that man. authorities say the man walked through the screening checkpoint exit into the secure side of the continental terminal. police are looking at surveillance tapes, they are trying to identify that man. airline passengers are boarding again this morning after flights were grounded for hours yesterday. so, you have what happened in newark yesterday. multiply that by what happened on christmas day, needless to say things are going to change when you fly. >> sherrie johnson is live to tell us what it is going to be like to leave town today. >> reporter: good morning. the u.s. government has issued new security rules for all airlines that fly into this country. immediately after the christmas day bomb attempt. the government ordered patdowns and extra luggage checks for all passengers on international flights to the u.s. today new measures narrow that down to those who may pose the biggest threat. passengers with passports from or who have traveled through countries that sponsor terrorism will have extra screening. many other passengers from

aboard other airlines can also expect extra scrutiny on a random basis. the goal is to keep terrorists off a plane. >> you may see different threshold for what makes you a select or a no-fly. right now those are very limited. i suspect they will probably broaden those definitions. >> reporter: tsa is also buying more full-body scanners for use in the u.s. and adding more air marshals to flights. what is critical, tighter security at foreign airports. in the studio, sherrie johnson, abc2 news. today, a city police officer is recovering after being hurt in a three-car crash involving a police cruiser. this happened around 8:30 last night on york road near woodburn avenue in north baltimore. the police car crashed into a subway restaurant and another vehicle overturned. we're told that the officer was hurt. he hurt his leg but his injuries are considered minor. he was taken to shock trauma. right now there's no word on what caused this crash. maryland transportation

authority police are seeking clues into the death of a pedestrian. the man's body was found along northbound i-95 and eastern avenue, that overpass, early yesterday morning. authorities have identified the victim as a 23-year-old man named christian gunichee, from baltimore. authorities are looking for other people -- who may have been in the area that could help them. a man shot to death after 3:00 yesterday afternoon. it happened in an alley in the 2300 block of ocala avenue in northwest baltimore. police say at this time no suspect or motive but witnesses reported seeing people running from the scene. :5:34. around the nation, florida officials say that they have arrested a man wanted for killing his family. this happened on thanksgiving day. turned out a tip from a tv viewer led to the arrest of paul meridge. accused of gunning down four family members. a viewer from "america's most

wanted" recognized the description of the man and his car. officers immediately responded to the tip late saturday and surrounded a small motel along long key, florida. >> i'm just happy the family found closure. that's what i'm happy about. that the family can now mourn. ok? >> meridge is accused of fatally shooting his twin sisters, a cousin and aunt at the family's home in juniper, florida. this morning the secret service says it's investigating a hanged effigy of the president. the large doll was found hanging from the building in the hometown of former president jimmy carter. a pokesperson says it was found yesterday morning along main street in the small town of plains, ga. a witness told the local tv station the doll had a rope around its neck with a sign with obama's name on it. the science fiction blockbuster "avatar" pulled in

officials say that the man inside suffered a heart attack and was removed from the car but then later died. >> cold is dangerous. i think it's something people don't really consider but a lot of bad things can happen in the cold. >> we got there and there was ice forming around the car, he had probably been there for a while. >> the victim is identified as 22-year-old joshua coleman of arlington, virginia. high winds and freezing temperatures are making for miserable situations in washington. a wind gust took out this giant tree and power lines there. crews spent yesterday trying to repair the damage. the downed power lines caused a minor power outage but customers there quickly got back on line. we're not the only ones getting hammered by the cold arctic winds. all up and down the east coast people are braving bone-chilling temperatures and many folks opted to stay indoors, others decided to venture out. in north carolina some brave souls headed to a farmers market in durham.

one man said he was so cold he couldn't get the money out of his pocket. not even hot chocolate could warm him up. in maine, the problem there was the snow, most of the state got a foot or more, portland got away with a measly eight inches. snowy roads are making it tough to drive on. plows are out in the highways and in town everyone is trying to get a jump on the clean-up. it looks nice there. check out another post card scene. this one near boston. the boardwalk. in the town of hull. on boston harbor. snow-covered and high winds are whipping up white-capped waves. there we go. wanted to show you that. eastern massachusetts seeing as much as 10 do 12 inches of snow. temperatures remain in the teens and 20s. coastal residents also have to watch out for the high wind

advisory, and heard reports of some water coming up on shore and freezing, locking some cars in place. 29 currently in boston. warmer there again because the wind is coming off the water but once they get inland it ranges from seven in mount washington, 6,000 feet to 18 degrees in albany. why do we show you new england in reference to our 23 in baltimore? we'll be there next week and doesn't look like that chill will go away much over the next six days. we could reinforce that cold air was play that football game in new england. snow back to the west. snow from lake erie. pretty heavy chicago and eastern suburbs extending back towards pittsburgh but really, they have nothing else to do but enjoy the snow this time of year. the rest of the eastern seaboard, you can see they are not the only ones getting the snow. we've had snow passing through the deep south from arkansas in through northern sections of mississippi. as we watch this southern push of the jet stream and last half-hour we had shown you some of the temperature near

freezing from orlando northbound, the northern half of florida, that arctic chill just locks itself in place, the citrus crops in danger of freezing for yet another morning, while we have this disturbance to the northwest and chance of maybe afternoon flurries around here, that is about it. i think most of the snow stays back west of the mountains. as far as today is concerned a little better than yesterday, where we were stuck in the 20s. we should hit our 2-degree guarantee of 32. with the wind making it feel like low 20s. yes, the chance of a flurry or a light snow shower on the north side. some evening flurries and less wind overnight should carry us back down to 22. we'll still have that mix of clouds and maybe some sun but the wind not as strong tomorrow as we're aiming for a high around 33 degrees. not much warmer but it will feel better with less wind. you can follow the our wake-up window at the bottom of the screen. we'll check out the extended forecast in a couple of minutes. right now kim brown has a look at the roads. we have our first crash of the morning in finksburg, involving a vehicle and deer.

competition with jamie's name on it. watching sports, basketball, football. many people, they like to park themselves in front of the tv remote control in hand, chips on the lap, beer next to you. >> come on, that's my life. come on. here we are. espn zones all across the u.s. found people who do it best. the ultimate couch potatoes. the goal of the competition is to see who can watch sports the longest without -- close your -- the comfy recliners. contestants get a bathroom break every eight hours, no sleeping allowed. they sat down 10:00 friday morning and you're looking at the competition here in chicago. the winner was jeff miller who took the title for the second year in a row. he lasted 39 hours and two minutes. >> there was a winner in baltimore, i think the first time in history a woman won, in arlington, virginia, jessica
