spotlight facing federal charges after trying to tap the phone of and u.s. senator >> reporter: james made national news going undercover to get support from acorn's offices in baltimore and other cities. days ago he was on stage accepting an award for undercover work at the acorn offices which had him dressed up to expose corruption in the group. this morning he was charged we attempted to tap the phones of a u.s. senator. on monday he posed as a vision or the in senator landers office. while two associates appeared to be phone repairman complete with tool belts and hard hats. when they started asking strange questions senator's staff got suspicious and made a call to authorities >> it was my understanding they were asking a number of probing

questions about certain information that members of the general public who were seeking assistance of an agency may not ask. that triggered some suspicion on behalf of the person's involves >> reporter: one of the young men charged, along with him, is the son of a u.s. attorney in another city in louisiana. if they are convicted they could get ten years in prison. as for senator lander she says the whole thing is unsettling and she wants to know their motives. she said she was dying. he awe parentally got better. a rose dale woman is being charged with committing a fraud. she is charged for soliciting money for a cancer she never had >> reporter: it is one thing to scam money. it is entirely another to prey on the good will of family and friends. she used facebook to milk two

former high school classmates out of $12,000 saying she had stomach cancer and needed the money for treatment. after some saw holes in her sob story a police investigation revealed she never had the disease and was never treated. a revelation leaving more victims stunned. >> i'm mad because she not only took people for money but she played on their emotions >> reporter: diane owns the caddy shack. last winter she came to her to help throw her daughter a proper sweet 16 because she said she wouldn't be alive to see her daughter graduate or get married. she fell for it and provided the party at cost. >> $2400 is what it cost me >> reporter: her story has changed again. she's now telling friends that she needed the money to get away from her husband and she filed a retraining order in court. his attorney says there are

holes in that story, as well. >> she has a terrible credibility problem. i don't know if anybody could believe her if she said it was rang outside >> reporter: he's defending her husband saying she deceived him as well and called the domestic claims ludacris. prosecutors tell us she's fled before. her victims say she can't hide anymore. >> what you think our punishment should be? >> go to jail. >> reporter: strong words from deep wounds. >> many folks we spoke with today say she scammed many others. if you have any information prosecutors would like to hear from you today. call the county's economic crimes division. we continue to watch developments in haiti. the united nations says it

boosted security at the food distribution senters in port-au- prince. troops sometimes had to fire pepper spray at crowds who are desperately trying to get food. meantime u.s. government spending on the earthquake is $300 million. that's more than one dollar from everyone in the united states. now for a look at tonight's top stories. toyota is suspending sales of eight of its most popular models because of faulty gas peddles. they could stick and cause unintended acceleration. last weekend toyota issued a recall for some of the same eight models affected 2.3 million vehicles. they include the camry and corolla and ram 4 crossover. serve talking about the economy including the president. most of president obama's state of the union address will talk about economic initiatives, tax cuts and a fiscal restraint for a government who keeps piling up debt. we'll air the state of the union. one of the folks in the

audience for the state of the union tonight will be incoming mayor stephanie rawlings blake. she's be a guest of senator carden. a woman in baltimore county has a story to tell. she was bitten by a cobra in the white marsh shopping center parking lot. it is true. it happened sunday. the woman says she thought it was a stick. when she picked it up it bit her finger. she brought the snake to nearby patient. she was taken to john's hopkins and antivenom had to be flown in from the philadelphia zoo. tracking stimulus money in your state. we'll the you how well maryland is doing with the green. thanks for coming back out. sure.

degrees. i think we'll head down to 30 or so overnight tonight. these numbers will be closer to 50 tomorrow early on. then you'll see a drop in the temperatures by tomorrow evening. satellite view quiet stuff. maryland's radar picking up no precipitation out here. we have a little light snow moving into ohio. part of an upper air disturbance. you can see the storm as it pushes across illinois and into indiana. no surface low with this. no main surface storm but there is a disturbance aloft putting down snow and sleet toward the midwest. we are expecting it to weaken and pass to our north. through this time tomorrow mild air building in. high pressure will slide eastward and south winds on the backside of that high will make for milder conditions out there tomorrow. tomorrow night some very cold air behind this disturbance is going rush in and pick up the wings and drop our temperatures
