a preview of the interview with the wife of south carolina governor mark sanford. good morning, i'm jamie costello. >> i'm megan pringle. hopefully you got everything you need for the big storm. >> we'll be here today and tomorrow morning. you coming in? >> yeah. >> you just assumed i'd not have pop meteorologist justin berk, it's going to be huge. >> can you say that again? >> huge. >> yeah, this is a big storm. there's a couple of ways to overhype it. there have been so many numbers thrown out in terms of snowfall. i know sometimes in the fray it can get mixed up who said what. this is what we're saying from the storm center. the snow will begin between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. we cover a wide range of central maryland. not everybody gets the first start flakes at the same exact time. so we're trying to cover the entire viewing area. so if you live northeast, it

will start earlier. if you live past howard county it may be a different time. so once it starts it gets heavy fast so don't get stuck out there. the snow map's coming up later on, but i still believe there will be sleet. i've been saying this all the way through. you get that sleet. that's not fun, but that also wastes quite a few hours of potential snowflakes and that's why the potential could be cut down. winter storm warning statewide that is a blizzard warning in delaware and new jersey. the snow is not here yet. the real band is back to the left and bottom of the white line and expect this to move in between 10:00 and 2:00. let's get the latest on the traffic right now. here's kim. >> no problems. all roads looking good here on the harrisburg expressway. 95 look going in both directions at the tunnel. 95 northbound before kateen

avenue has some debris on the shoulder. jamie, megan, back to you. 5:33, hours after she is sworn in as the new mayor, she had to visit a crime scene. >> sherrie johnson joins us more in the studio live with the violence on the street. sherrie? >> reporter: good morning. a baltimore city detective is expected to be released from shock trauma after an exchange of gunfire with two suspects. the shooting happened around 8:00 last night in the 2700 block of oakmont avenue in the park heights area of northwest baltimore. two plain clothed officers were investigating another shooting when they approached a group of men on a porch. that's when shots rang out. when the smoke cleared, a detective was wounded, a suspect killed and another wounded. the injured officer is a four- year veteran of the u.s. marine corps and saw combat in iraq. >> my detective who got shot is a four-year veteran of the united states marine corps and sevenned his country in iraq.

now he's serving the citizens of baltimore. again, this is the kind of heroic action the men and women of this department are willing to do to put bad guys in jail that are on the streets of our city. >> the injured suspect was taken to sinai hospital where he was last reported in critical condition. authorities say this was the second police-involved shooting this year and the first that resulted in death. live in the studio, sherrie johnson, abc 2 news. 5:34 right now. now that the toyota recall is already reeling from the pedal mess, we learned toyota's chief executive will speak later on today in its fist news conference -- first news conference since the huge recall. they are about to recall 70,000 prius hybrids oive ert brake problems. japan says toyota also launched an investigation into possible

problems with the brakes in two more hybrids including the luxury lexus. technicians have started fixing faulty gas pedals from toyota's first massive recall. dealers are vowing to work as long and as hard as it takes to repair all of the cars. all toy yon ta owners can do is wait. >> when you have a safety issue and you have the media saying these cars are dangerous and you need to attract service there's only so much we can do. >> transportation secretary ray lahood announced a new probe of this electronic system that links the gas pedal through a tiny computer to the throttle. when barbara walters gets that interview with someone involved in a scandal, it's one you have to see. americans will hear the dark details to governor mark sanford's marriage to his wif jenny. >> mark refused to promise to

i hear you, jamie. jamie's talking about iowa. we'll talk about how widespread this storm is coming up in a moment. i wanted to do some stats here. currently for the season, 35.6 inches at bwi. that ranks us number 14 since records were kept in 1883. a lot of talk about how much snow we get. well, this is going to be historic for a couple of reasons. number one, the first time on record that we wind up with a storm, two storms in one season over a foot of snow. if we get 10 inches, the new ranking would be number 7 of

snow of all time. if we get 15, it will rank us at number 5. the big wallop, 22.5 inches. if we get that, this would rank the second all-time snowiest winter on record. number one and two were set in the last 15 years. we've had a pattern here of really heavy winters. jamie, you war talking about iowa with severe weather all ganging up here on the east. the problem is when it begins between 10:00 and 2:00, it comes down heavy within the next couple of hours. we will mix in some sleet to cut down on the snowfall totals. we'll tell you how much we do expect coming up in a moment. now what's happening with the roads with kim brown? >> reporter: traffic's flowing freely on the harrisburg expressway. all lanes open on the beltway as well. no problems on 95. only thing to let you know about is the water main break

sustained winds for three consecutive hours. we may have it for an hour or so or borderline conditions but it will be worse at least out toward the beaches as we roll through tomorrow afternoon. the satellite and radar starting to show up precipitation here around the potomac. this is the first of the storm. right now, no reports of this stuff reaching the ground. i'm saying that with some hesitation because we may saturate the air in a hurry. this is a powerful storm. right now, it appears as if the stuff is showing up on radar falls from the sky and dries up before reaching the ground. however, the real line is back here on and through central virginia, back through lynchburg and heading in through charleston. you see a lot of rain mixed in. the pink and purple shadings with the mix. it is locked down and will get pulled down behind the storm but we'll be mixing that stuff in, which means for those of

you snow lovers wondering how much moisture is available with this particular storm, we'll waste a few hours of flakes with sleet and maybe freezing rain mixed in on the eastern shore. we've got a severe band of rain pushing its way on in through the florida panhandle. this has damaging winds. there may be hail and even twisters firing up as the storm itself really starts getting cranking. we are watching these two areas of low prosh sure. one pushing across the nation's mid-section and then another coming across the gulf and another across the mid- atlantic. taking it in closer and you can see the progression of this tropical moisture. tropical energy means heat. heat in the wintertime can easily turn snow to sleet. that is important because as we are watching the potential and temperatures will likely stay near or below freezing for most of the storm event, you take the warm air at cloud level. that's where you start generating rain drops. then you have to frez on the way down.

that's the sleet pellet. second piece of energy sitting back here rolling across kansas and nebraska. we'll take these two, merge them across the mid-atlantic. this is what you want to see. how much are we going to get? the moisture available for this storm on average is about 2 inches of liquid and a normal storm would translate to 20 inches of snow. it starts as heavy, wet snow. we mix in sleet and maybe freezing rain. we lose a few hours of potential accumulation. back in the mountains, west virginia and virginia, 36 inches is legitimate. an average of 1 to 2 feet through d.c. the wide range is

dependent on who winds up with the sleet and how long. then the snow picks up as the temperatures get colder tomorrow winding one 10 to 15 inches, maybe higher amounts. you have to figure in the colder temperatures tomorrow need fluffier flakes which changes the whole competition and squeezing out more snow. snow and sleet in baltimore begins between 10:00 and noon downtown and back towards carroll county. go to the eastern shore, you'll have more of that mix with warmer temperatures when you go all snow by tomorrow morning. let's see what's happening on the roads with kim. traffic is lighter than normal. we're accident free around the major roadways. no problems on the harrisburg expressway, 95 and the bw parkway looking good between the beltways and around 695 looking good. all lanes open. we have one crash in howard county, route 32. as you check around baltimore city, incident free here as well as you look at frank lynn

all right. get ready. nothing better than this one. the weather is coming. justin says we can expect to see snow accumulations from a foot to 2 feet of snow in our area. amtrak has canceled service south of d.c. and i'll tell you what, we're going to be watching this all day long, even southwest airlines decided they are not going to fly after 2:00 and won't fly until sunday. also this morning, a baltimore city police officer recovering after he was shot last might. investigators say one of two suspects died when officers returned fire. may other stephanie rawlings blake and commissioner bealefeld arrived at shock trauma right after the shooting and said they are thankful that this officer survived.

it could be up to 3 months before haiti makes a final decision on ten americans charged with child kidnapping. they are missionaries and most are from utah. they are accused of trying to take 33 undocumented children across the border into the dominican republic. each of the counts carries a possible sentence of 5 to 15 years in prison. president obama bracing for expectations at best of a fineny increase in jobs and jobless rate that could be edging up to 10.1%. pt president voiced frustration this week that employment continues to lag. he plans to travel to prince george's county later on today to meet with business owners. we want to get to the delays because the schools are starting to call off the hook now. >> baltimore city right now, baltimore city public schools are on a three-hour delay. baltimore county public schools are closing two hours early.

>> carroll county we had that up 2 hours 45 minutes early. howard county will be shutting it down three hours early. >> keep in mind, we'll keep those scrolling and keep you updated all morning long. at the bottom of the screen, we'll have what you need. and now to justin with the final check of weather. we should title this snow sleet snow. we have the ice mixed in between that will impact what we have to deal with and how much you measure. the erroneous apts of 26 and higher, the ridiculous amounts, would be deep into the mountains to our west. slightly lower amounts on the eastern shore. this all factors in sleet mixing in this afternoon to waste a few hours of potential snow. blizzard warning for new jersey and delaware. we'll have the heaviest stuff fall tonight into tomorrow. for today, temperatures roll in and get heavy fast. tomorrow is the big day.
