we're back to all snow here. while when the mix showing up on the radar it's going back to all snow. tough to pick out who's going to get what. we know we have a heavy band coming through. this is really for academic purposes because the issue is the fact we've had snow on top of the snow we already had last weekend. then we got the layer of ice for a lot of us. move snow on top of that and the stronger winds kick in. the blizzard warning. i think the main story of the day will be downed trees and power line and power outage and unfortunately i think there will be structural damage this afternoon with the weight of all of this stuff just pushing its threshold. temperatures dropping staying in the mid-20s. windchills, single digits or teens with those strong winds literally howling at 40 miles per hour or stronger and the heaviest snow pretty much now until early to mid afternoon. that band of snow will actually shift itself off to the east and you can see that pocket. this is the pocket that computer models were picking on. it looks like it's racing through central virginia into the coast which means the coastal areas turn into snow. we're watching the cold air turn back in. we're watching rapidly deepening low pressure off of the del mar of the coast. this is what is pulling air in from all directions like a vacuum. this is what is going to increase the winds and turn
6:31 am
everything back to snow. the thing is the computer models picked out this band of heavy snow to literally just sit right on top of central maryland for at least six hours. if that happens, we could be throwing some of these snow forecasts out of the window but basically we're looking for the temperatures going from near 30 or freezing now eastern shore into the 20s. there's temperatures of 16 in charleston and pittsburgh. very cold air in rapids and there's our computer model highlighting as you can see that eye, the clearing off of the coast. very slow movement with this storm. that heavy band of snow by this afternoon and this evening moves east of baltimore, but sits on hartford and cecil county. your heavy snow conditions will last a little bit longer so i'm sticking with that forecast of you having more snow even though you're not winning the snow race right now. hartford and cecil county up towards southern p.a. will be pushing the higher end of our forecast. hopefully by 10:00 or midnight most of the stuff gets off of the coast and gets out of here
6:32 am
and more sunshine should give us a chance to clean things up still an average of 12 to 20- inch for central and southern maryland. slightly more to the north. they've already cracked the one foot mark in new freedom and you could be -- i'm saying you could be doubling that. we're looking around baltimore city southbound, pushing close to a foot. a little lighter amount towards the south but heavy snow will come down during the course of the day and into the afternoon. you go from rain over to snow even towards the beaches. our forecast for today. we drop into the mid-20s. looks like almost a repeat of saturday. and i'm really not trying to grandstand, folks, but i want you to understand this is a harder-hitting storm than we've dealt with over the weekend. even though the snow amounts aren't as high there is still respectable snow amounts and winds gusting from 40 to 50 miles per hour in maryland. should be coming to annd. how about an extended forecast. we haven't done this all
6:33 am
morning long. 35 tomorrow. 36 friday with temperatures actually dropping into the teens overnight. so melting, refreezing problems and a chance of more snow sunday night and monday. but let's get through this first and we'll handle that. but it looks the potential of a few more inches early next week. all of that said and done it's a mess out there. in let's see what is happening on the roads. >> if you're heading out now, the main roads are for the most part passable if you drive slow and definitely take your time. the side streets are definitely going to be worse but as justin mentioned for some of the areas in the boston metro where the snow tapered off and got replaced with freezing rain. the freezing rain really did us no favors as you're coated with a nice glaze of ice that the snow is falling on top of. so where you think you may be driving through all snow could be ice underneath that. could have reduced traction and could get yourself into a slippery and dangerous situation.
6:34 am
now here looking at 95 -- at 195. you may see areas where a plow has hit a couple of times or may be just one pass on the plowed roadways but everything is not going to be all clear, especially look for slick spots the on and offramps as you make your way onto the beltway. in terms of accidents we're kind of light. we do have incidents working. you're going to see a crash on the on the scene at pikesville in old court road. in patrol 50 westbound, route 450 accident there. traffic is able to be diverted onto ry dell road and 95 northbound at riverside parkway. a disabled vehicle is blocking the right lane and right shoulder as we look downtown i see tire track. i'm not sure if a plow was hit around town. you definitely want to take your time as you make your way out. i anticipate we're going to have lighter than normal volume as a lot of school systems, a lot of governments are closed.
6:35 am
today is a furlow day. except if you drive a salt truck. the federal government has closed again today. that's going to cut down to traffic as you make your way southbound headed towards the d.c. metro. if you have to go out, might want to head out now while the roadways are still fairly passable because the conditions are going to continue to deteriorate as that blizzard warning kicks in as we make our way towards mid morning. roads are going to get a lot worse. visibility is not so hot. as justin said you're only going to get about .25-mile in front of you. take your time if you head out. if you take public transportation we're going to toss it to mta's mark jones. >> once again providing limited service on the local bus. right rail trains are operating every 30 minutes from hunt valley to cromwell station including bwi but no penn station every is.

>> we have john leo polled our elected official. as an elected official i'm waking up here this morning. i work in anne arundel county, what should i do? that we're getting swamped with e-mails about people wanting to know should i go to work, risk being fired for not showing up here today? >> well county government is closed today, of course but i want to give you some good news, our salt barns are now at capacity. we were at 2500 tons of salt yesterday. we made a number of calls and now i can report the good news that our salt barns are now at capacity with 12,000 tons of salt. i can tell you that some of our roads are closed because of downed trees and lines. i know one such road is 424 at newman way in krofton. i know we're out helping some utility employees who were stuck at parkway drive in hanover. as you have stated several times, there will be blizzard

6:42 am
are you seeing a lot of that. we're seeing quite a bit of that. the county has had programs in the volunteer programs. one is called snow patrol. the four-wheeled drive vehicle and just yesterday eight people did call up to volunteer for those programs. getting back to my original question. if i work on richie highway and i know the place is open and you're telling me and the governor is saying stay off the roads. what should i do? >> you should follow that advice unless it's absolutely necessary to get out there. obviously when there are abandoned cars our crews having difficult time clearing the roads. >> i think our viewers are frustrated because they're hearing from government officials, stay off the roads which is appropriate and good advice. the problem is their boss is saying get in here. there's a real con flick as far as that goes. i know you can't offer any -- i can tell you county government is closed so i can speak for that. >> let's say a road in ferndale hasn't been touched. >> a residential street -- >> a residential street and joe schmo has a snowplow. can he plow that street without getting into trouble.
6:43 am

6:44 am
police say that it started as an armed robbery call and officers spotted the suspect's vehicle on delaney valley road. stepped out of his car but that suspect we're told tried to hilt the officer who fired his gun before getting hit. police then caught up with the suspect we're told that suspect was arrested after a very brief foot chase and then the suspect now facing armed robbery and first degree assault charges and then in the meantime that officer was taken to shock trauma, being treated for non life-threatening injuries. and the officers is expected to be okay. >> let's look at some of the more pictures you're sending in here to us. this is bobby and snow pics. but we have jeff hager. he's standing by live to tell us how the weather is. >> we're in owings mills
6:45 am
shopping center at owings mill boulevard and reisterstown road. driving over here at 5:00 in the morning. the roads were relatively clear around the baltimore beltway and reisterstown road. .5-inch of stuff on the road. it wasn't so bad. it's intensified a bit. we've already got people out early working in this lot. this is about the third time he's gone over it since we've been here and began setting is up our operation as we see him scraping it off and seems like he'll go around after about .5- inch and maybe have another inch, roughly that he has to go back and kind of retrace. we wantedded to help establish where we're at as far as our operation here for the next couple or several hours. bill fink, my videographer is handy with a shovel. he's cut out this little fox hole here. we're going to bunker down from
6:46 am
this position i guess throughout the day and from this vantage point you can see the intersection here at owings mill boulevard and reisterstown road. there are vehicles that are out. there's a truck out plowing but here we've got a car that's taking it slow, which it should be doing now and we've got another suv coming up off of the ramp. the ramp is obviously a little slicker. starting to get a little bit more accumulation than you'll see on the roads themselves. for instance here i'm presuming they had a green light -- yeah, i think they had a greene light -- so everybody is taking it slow as they should and trying to try to get to where they're going but not go too fast put and as it intensifies. you really shouldn't be out on the roads and don't let the fact that they really haven't become impassable fool you in some fashion make you think you should be running out to work because it doesn't seem to be the case. i wouldn't even call it so much of a snow or sleet or what we like to call wintry mix coming
6:47 am
down. there's going to be icing on these roads but that's our scenario for now. we'll keep you updated as we go through the morning. reporting live in owings mills, jeff hager, back to you. how was your drive in. >> reporter: wasn't so bad. just kind of a thin sheen. when we got on reisterstown road which obviously isn't as big as the beltway. i think the bigger the road the better you are for now. as you get into the smaller secondary roads or side streets it's going to become more difficult, depending on the size of the road. >> we'll check in with you in a bit. >> speaking of chilly, we have chilly pictures to show you. not of chile, but of chilly people. or chile dogs. >> this picture was sent to us from adonia. she shows us how her friends have come through. this looks like the snow dogs.
