we'll show you the map in a moment. today more rain and possible flooding will follow. check out maryland's most powerful doppler radar now. we've got some rain along 95 north and west. in the green it's light and yellow and orange, pretty heavy. when you're coming from the triple bridge split up towards woodlawn and riding up the northwest corner of the beltway it gets pretty heavy past pikesville. 795 and 140, owings mills, even through stevenson, heavy rain and through central baltimore county, towson getting heavy rain, north side, cockeysville, heavy stuff moving from owings mills in your direction. that will include hunt valley. we've also got glenarm in on this through the hereford zone, 83 very wet. jarrettsville about to get it. and bel air, this stuff also going to get real heavy as it passes in your direction over the next 10 minutes, probably going to last for at least a half-hour stretch of heavy rain. more on and off rain likely today, even isolated thunderstorms this afternoon. our 2-degree guaranteed high of 66 but plan for it to be wet and look for big puddles if

you cannot see the ground then turn around because it could be deeper than you expect. 6:30. kim brown has the latest. >> we have several incidents including utility problems. first, jfx, 6:31 a.m., this is never a good sign, traffic for the most part stopped southbound. these delays stretch to the ruxton road overpass. way past cold spring lane. so if at all possible avoid getting on the jfx this morning, if you travel the beltway on the top side you may want to try york road or charles street. drive times, bumped up slightly because of increased volume. southbound on 95 from whitemarsh boulevard down towards the beltway, about five minutes. 83, as justin mentioned, rain now could make it a seven-minute ride from shawan to the beltway. 795 also getting heavy rain at this time. six minutes from owings mills boulevard to 695.

on the eastern shore, st. michaels road and arcadia shores road remains closed. this time in both directions because of a crash that brought down some poles and wires in the intersection. we have the same thing going on in millersville, that has route 178 at millersville road closed in both directions. the crash is cleared but crews still on scene trying to yet -- get the wires out of the road. utility work has two lanes blocked at light and lombard street, that will be in place for a couple of weeks. and in reisterstown you're going to see the intersection at falls road and black rock road closed due to downed wires. a lot of things happening already. back to you. it's a mess. 6:32. it will take time, a long time, to get over what we saw in rosedale. a mother and her child crossing philadelphia road hit by a truck. abc2 news linda so with our story. >> reporter: it's a family's worst nightmare. the mother killed, baby was taken to the hospital. we're awaiting an update on the child's condition.

a witness tells us the mother was crossing the street with her baby when she was hit by a pickup truck. skid marks show where the truck went off the road. it happened on philadelphia road near the beltway. worcester county police -- baltimore county police say say the woman was taken to shock trauma where she was pronounced dead. robert craig witnessed the crash. he said she was walking to the bus stop, when she realized she was about to be hit she tried to get her baby to safety. >> from what i understand she was able to push the baby out of the way and was pinned under the truck. >> reporter: police have not said if the driver of the pickup will be charged. we're hoping to get an update on the baby's condition later this morning. in the studio, linda so, abc2 news. then we have this disturbing story from new york city. a man stops to help a woman who is being attacked. he ends up getting stabbed by his attacker and dies. because nobody stopped to helped him. the surveillance video shows about 20 people walked past the man as he was right there on

the ground. one person even stops to take a picture. takes about an hour and a half before somebody finally calls 911. the man is lying on the ground for two hours before any help arrives. the economy is so hard to find people hiring that four nights on the street could be worth it. >> hundreds of job seekers camped out for days for an opportunity to fill out one of the 750 applications. the elevator union is handing out for 75 openings. the job is an elevator repair person, starts the employee off as an apprentice making around $18 an hour with a chance to advance to $40 an hour. some of the job seekers have been unemployed for more than a year in the state with the 9% unemployment rate. let's go to tulsa, oklahoma. 40,000 people watched one woman walk on air. >> this wing-walking act stole the show at the quick trip air and rocket racing show. ashley battle walks a very thin line between danger and

this is the scene last night at 83 at northern parkway. the ramp going south to 83 is closed because of high water. we've got a backup that kim brown will tell us about in a minute. and more storms could roll through today. justin? 6:45. we had up to two to three inches of rain on the west side of the beltway yesterday. the remnants of storms that dropped hail, this is going to be a big talker. 1.5-inch hail closed glass cuss at 8:10 last night. the storms fell apart a little bit eastbound but wide spread reports to the west. this morning, cloudy skies and doppler indicating heavy rain. we're following it on the west, now north side of the beltway. towson up through glenarm, approaching bel air. heavy rain in northern harford, baltimore county and still extends back towards western sections of carroll and howard county this morning. we're on the fringe, the boundary to the south. check out the temperatures. we're at 51 and 50 easton.

56 pax river in southeast virginia. they are in the 60s. in fact they will get sunshine and that is really going to erupt this storm system and really develop the possibility of some strong storms. again, like yesterday, there's also spin back here. more rain builds on top of our area as we head back towards the afternoon. watching the boundary itself lift to the north. it could lead to heavy rain. dc across the potomac, west and south of baltimore going through the afternoon ride. that ride through the beltway. we'll have more showers and storms extending through midnight. the good news, we try to push dry air off the coast as we head through mid-week. for today, 66 our 2-degree guarantee. look for periods of rain, possible flooding and some afternoon thunder mixed in. here's kim brown with the commute. >> good morning. depending on where you are this monday morning commute could be a bit of a bear. we do have lots of heavy rain. as we peek at the jfx, what we're dealing with, significant backups on 83 here at northern

parkway, with the problem, the far right lane at cold spring lane is blocked due to standing high water. if you travel the jskts everyday you know where i'm talking about, that lane always floods up when it rains really hard. delays stretch all the way past the ruxton road overpass but southbound they clear up past cold spring lane. seriously, the delays could be tacking an extra 10, possibly 20 minutes to your commute if you travel the jfx. looking at the drive times -- beltway, not too bad, outer loop from bel air to providence road, that is about seven minutes. 9 a, not bad from whitemarsh boulevard to the beltway, five minutes. and between the 83s, people attempting to get on the jfx, that pushed up to maybe three minutes. around the area we have utility work reported downtown baltimore, light and lombard, blocking two lanes, could cause problems downtown. expect that to be in effect for about two weeks. inner loop lanes at security 3w4r-6d we have debris reported and in anne arundel county, route 178 at millersville road

remains closed in both directions from an earlier accident that we had so far. up in reisterstown, still going to see the intersection at falls road and black rock road closed due to downed power lines. our wake-up window at the bottom of the screen. 6:48. a mother and baby trying to cross philadelphia road didn't make it to the other side. they were hit by a truck. linda so reports. >> reporter: a witness tells us the woman was crossing the street with her baby when she was hit by a pickup truck. but the mother made a split-second decision that may have saved her baby's life. skid marks show where the pickup left the road. it happened sunday near philadelphia road and the beltway. police say the mother was taken to the shock trauma where she was pronounced dead. we're awaiting an update on the baby's condition. robert craig witnessed the crash. he says the woman was walking from the nearby shopping center heading toward the bus stop when the mother realized she was about to be hit. she pushed her baby out of the way. >> a lady was crossing the street.

apparently from what i understand the guy in the pickup, he lost control of the truck, his steering locked up on him. >> police have not said if the driver of the pickup will be charged. we're hoping to get an update on the baby's condition later this morning. linda so, abc2 news. look at the tornadoes in mississippi. they left hundreds of people homeless and the governor says the destruction reminds him of katrina. the storm hurled trailer homes, knocked down trees, killed 10 people. the damage is particularly bad in yazoo city. several twisters caused a path of destruction for nearly 200 miles. >> you could feel the wind just coming through the hallway, picking us up and went straight to the back room. just got down and prayed. >> i don't know what to do. i'm just totally lost. i have nothing. nothing. just nothing. i don't know where to begin. don't know where to end it. >> the governor of mississippi has seen the damage and says

that the first thing on his agenda is to help the homeless. he's already started the process of temporary housing to help those whose homes were destroyed by the tornadoes. we're 10 minutes away from 7:00. anne arundel county fire investigators are trying to figure out what caused a parked fire engine to roll down a hill and yet get this, several children on board this. happened in pasadena saturday as a volunteer fire company visited a child's birthday party. eight children were in the engine, were checking out the truck, when it started to roll down the hill. one man jumped into the cab and started to steer the engine into a tree. the parents were scared out of their minds. the kids, they thought it was the best thing ever. [all shouting at once] >> the kids, all of them were ok. no one was hurt. the front of the fire truck,

though, has extensive damage. you're counting those in your house and baltimore is counting those in jail. we're the first state to decide that inmates should be considered residents where they last lived, not where the prisons are. let's say a prisoner is from the city but in jail in hagerstown. that counts for baltimore. lawmakers are applauding this but officials in rural areas are not too happy about this. the families of each of the victims was given a miner's hat and the west virginia governor placed the helmet on 29 white crosses. the convention center was packed to honor the memory, the courage, the pride of the fathers, brothers and sons who died in the april 6ths explosion and fire. the president was there and spoke. >> nothing we say can fill the hole they leave in your hearts. or the absence they leave in your lives. >> the investigation continues to find the cause of that tragedy. three weeks ago. and to prevent it from

happening again. 6:51. the coast guard has suspended the search for a sinking boat. a man reported his boat was sinking on the water, on middle river in essex on saturday. according to his distress call he said he had three children on board. so several agencies went out there, they searched the area on the water and in the air. but never found any evidence that the boat had even set sail. the coast guard called off the search for now. we have a deadly feline virus to tell you about. putting a temporary stop on cat adoptions now at the carroll county humane society. the shelter's director says this virus first popped up several weeks ago but was not diagnosed until one cat showed distinctive source in its mouth. the shelter is immediately vaccinating any cats that are brought in but it's asking people who find strays to try to hold off on bringing them to the shelter for a while. a baltimore barber shop is gutted after an early morning fire. the two-alarm fire broke out at the barber shop on liberty heights avenue yesterday. firefighters rescued three

people from the roof of the building. where another person was able to escape on his own. an adult and two children were rushed to sinai as a precaution. 6:53. the orioles won yesterday. 3-16 now on the year. the orioles beat the red sox in 10 innings. the red sox were leading early and then miguel tejada hit a two-run shot from left field. in the 10th, matt with the two-run single and now the orioles will try to win in front of the home fans. for the first time this year tomorrow against the new york yankees. the draft is over, ended with the ravens drafting seven new players and ray lou was was in new york for one selection. ray? >> with the 43rd pick in the 2010 nfl draft, the baltimore ravens select sergio kendall, linebacker texan. >> the ravens first pick of the thfl draft, was soon joined by

six others. overall the coach says he's very happy. >> they got players we're excited about as a coaching staff to have. guys we wanted that just speaks volumes. >> the ravens official season opener against the jets september 13th, a monday night game. the big news though -- the steelers quarterback ben roethlisberger is supposed to make a statement today about his suspension from the nfl. espn reported yesterday one team was close to trading for roethlisberger on draft day. another report says the steeler locker room now divided. some of the teammates are questioning his leadership. though earth day was last thursday thousands crowded the national mall in dc for a climate rally concert. this was yesterday. the rally marked the 40th

annual earth day with an all day concert featuring sting, john legend, jimmy cliff and others. movie director james cameron and the reverend jesse jackson were among the speakers pushing for the government to pass comprehensive crime legislation. >> today's not just one day, it's everyday and has been that way forever. we got to make them understand the urgency of the problem. of climate change. you young people are going to have to accept this responsibility. it's your lives. >> see kim brown in the crowd? she was there. dozens held signs and sported colorful outfits including a group painted up as characters from "avatar." working together to make life a little cleaner. >> the goal across our area saturday. in baltimore county, more than 1,000 volunteers working the community to help out the senior living center there.
