beltway. traffic also clear around the beltway along with that weather. we don't have anything working so far in the area. we had the rain come through yesterday and during the overnight hours, so the roads could be a little slick. so take it easy along some of those curves especially a winding road like the jfx. here at 97 in anne arundel county, traffic is moving well at route 100. we're looking good along the 83s and along 795 as well. megan, back to you. a doctor shot by a patient a barricaded situation, a hospital on lockdown sounds like something out of a movie. this was our community and this was hopkins. linda so is live with what happened yesterday. >> reporter: the doctor who was shot is expected to survive. last night, he came out of surgery and is in stable condition. it was a chaotic scene with the whole thing unfolding around 11:00 on thursday. the sprawling medical campus

was put on lockdown after police say paul pardus shot the doctor. he became distraught after being briefed on his mother's condition. he believed the doctors failed her and prompted him to shoot the doctor. he then ran into his mother's room, shot her in the head then turned the gun on himself. >> my brother finally contacted her and she said, have i to go, hung the phone up abruptly. but at least we know if she answered the phone she's okay. >> reporter: a metal detector may have kept pardus from bringing that gun into the hospital but there are more than 80 entrances on this campus. it's nearly impossible to have a metal detector at each entrance. still, officials will review the security procedures. linda so, abc 2 news. >> we all know hopkins is a huge hospital. to put things in perspective, the hospital has nearly 1100 patient beds and sees more than

46,000 patients admitted every, single year on top of the more than 400,000 outpatient encounters, more than 12,000 people working at the hospital in the school of medicine along with 3700 full time and part time faculty. it has been ranked the number one hospital in the country for each year over the last 20 years by u.s. news and world reports. hospital violence is a growing threat. since 1995, there have been 256 reports of violent crimes in medical centers, a number that's risen over the past three years. a 22-year-old woman is in the hospital this morning after police say she was imprisoned in baltimore county in an apartment and beaten. germaine smith-bey drove her to the medical center claiming they found the friend in condition. once she woke up from a coma two weeks later, they learned the so-called good samaritans

are suspects. according to authorities, smith-bey and king repeatedly beat the woman and kept her locked into the reisterstown apartment. police say money was likely the motive in the crime. >> somehow they were able to get ahold of her bank card, and they were using her bank card to remove money from the bank machine, the money she was receiving from social security income. >> the doctors at gbmc found the victim. she's been blinded in one eye, part of her upper lip is missing. open wounds have left her with a staph infection and flesh eating bacteria throughout her body. she is in rough condition. the harford county animal rescue turned to a heartbreaking story now of animal cruelty into hope. two weeks ago a garbage truck driver happened to hear a moaning sound coming from the trash bin. he found a taped up box inside with six puppies.

weather was wild. a lot of heavy rain and it came quickly. justin berk joins us with more. hey, justin. >> i expected it to be scattered showers and real rain rolling in around dark. coming in four or five hours early means it left early. the ground's still wet and the skies cleared out around the immediate baltimore area. clouds in the harrah ford zone up towards pa. we may filter moore clouds back into the picture. we're down to 66 in baltimore. 70 right now in easton and 73 in ocean city. still have to transition the slightly cooler, drier air into the region. we may still hold into the 80s as we go for our hour by hour forecast. a sunny to partly and mostly cloudy sky at times. the skies will be changeable and we should remain dry with the two degree guaranteed high.

news time is 5:44. it is one of the most respected hospitals in the world here in our community, and it became a crime scene. gunshots fired inside johns hopkins. in the end, two people dead, a doctor seriously wounded. linda so joins us live to tell us how that doctor is doing this morning and what happened.

linda, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, megan. the good news is the doctor is expected to survive. he spent the day in surgery and came out late last night and remains in stable condition here at hopkins. it was a chaotic scene as it unfolded on the eighth floor of the nelson building. police say 50-year-old paul pardus pulled out a gun and shot the doctor in the stomach. he became distraught as he was being briefed on his mother's condition. he believed the doctors had failed his mother and shot the doctor, shot his mother in the head then turned the gun on himself. it caught a lot of people offguard. >> it's scary knowing someone is on the outside on a rampage with a gun in the hospital where we are supposed to be protected. >> reporter: a metal detector might have prevented him from bringing that gun into the

building but there are more than 80 entrances on the sprawling campus and to have a detector at every door is near impossible, still they will review security procedures. linda so, abc 2 news. >> the scene that played out inside johns hopkins yesterday morning is a scene that's played out across the united states. just this year alone, take a look at this video. this is from a shooting last april in knoxville where a man with a history of mental problems guns down a woman and wounded two other people in a hospital. there was also a shooting outside of cleveland at a hospital over the summer. this facility had two shootings in one month. there have been shootings at eight hospital as cross the united states. yesterday's deadly attack since 1995 there have been 256 reports of violent crimes in medical center, a number that has risen over the past three

years. neighbors say that suspect in the shooting was a loving son. paul pardus helped take care of his mother at their home in virginia. >> he was always there for her. he never left her side. i told her when i seen him walking her out that she had a great son. you don't find too many sons like that. >> the mother has been identified as 84-year-old jean davis. it's hard to understand the desperation pardus felt. it's something those that knew him are trying to understand, including his own brother. sherrie? >> reporter: good morning, megan. family members are upset by what baltimore police are calling a murder-suicide involving the son of a patient here at johns hopkins hospital. paul pardus' brother alvin

reemerged. since then in the last 24 hours, it has exploded now to a major hurricane, a very distinct eye roughly 70 mile as way from vera cruz, mexico and the track takes it to the west and may hit the major mile population of mexico ski. 120 mile-per-hour winds, west movement makes landfall perhaps as a cat 4 tonight with winds at 140 miles per hour storm surge up to 15 feet up to 15 inches of rainfall as it rolls into the mexico city metro area. major flooding is expected. mud slides. this will be a deadly storm. there's no what i to avoid that. locally, we have a little clearing after yesterday's rain even as severe weather in new york pushing into eastern new england. today we're expecting to have a partly cloudy sky. i expect more clouds into the sky than we're seeing here. temperatures 82 with a strong breeze averaging 15 to 25 miles

driver nor the monitor did anything to stop all of that terrible behavior. the school board did not have a comment in this story. a cheerleader has been kicked off the squad. she's only 6 years old. her mom said it started because she wanted to alter a cheer that she thought was inappropriate for 6-year-old girls. this caused a lot of controversy in the community. the cheer said our backs ache, our shirts are too tight, we shake our booties from left to right. >> the best word you can say is one it doesn't make any sense. for a 6-year-old to be saying those words is inappropriate. >> she expressed her feelings to the general manager, coach and board who claim that the cheer has been around for years and that the squad had no intention of squashing it so they kicked her daughter off the team. some parents have no problem with the cheer but other squads have invited the 6-year-old daughter to come cheer with them. all right. breast cancer touches so many
