drive. -- montevideo drive. a doctor continues to recover after a gunman shot him before killing his own mother and then taking his own life. linda? >> reporter: the doctor is expected to survive. he spent the day in surgery yesterday and came out last night. he remains in stable condition here at hopkins. it was a kai ottic scene as thing -- chaotic scene as things broke out shortly after 11:00 yesterday. the sprawling medical campus was put on lookdown after police say 50-year-old paul pardus pulled out a gun and shot the doctor in the stomach. he became distraught after being briefed on his mother's condition. he believed doctors failed her, and that's what prompted had imto shoot the doctor. he then shot his mother in the head and turned the gun on himself. it caught a lot of people at

pardus pulled out a gun and shot dr. david in the symptom mick. he believed doctors had failed his mother and prompted him to shoot the doctor. pardus then ran into his mother's room, shot her in the head and turned the gun on himself. news of the shooting had people with relatives who work here at hopkins scrambling to get to the scene. >> my brother finally contacted her and at least we know that she answered the phone and is okay. >> a metal detector might have kept pardus from bringing the gun into hopkins. officials know there are more than 80 entrances and to have a detector at every door is near impossible. they will review security procedures in hopkins. linda so, abc 2 news. >> the scene that played outside of johns hopkins hospital and inside the hospital yesterday morning is a scene that we have seen numerous times in and around

u.s. hospitals every single year. this is from knoxville where a man with a history mental problems wounded two people. there was also a shooting inside a cleveland hospital. so far this year there have been fatal shootings at eight hospital as cross the united states including yesterday's deadly attack at hopkins. since 1995, there have been 256 reports of violent crimes in medical centers, a number that has risen over the past three years. this morning, we're hearing from the suspect, the shooter, neighbors who knew him and northern virginia at their home. they describe him as a very dedicated son. >> he was are always there for her. if she had to go in an chance with her. i told her when i seen him

walking her out that she had a great son. you don't find too many like that. >> it's hard to imagine the desperation paul pardus must have felt. it's something those who knew him are trying to understand including his own brother. sherrie? >> reporter: good morning, megan. yes, family members are still trying to come to terms with all of this. they are still in a state of shock and confusion over the whole event here. paul pardus' brother alvin gibson says he spoke to pardus on sunday after his mother underwent surgery. gibson said his mother was very upset and did not tush out the way his doctor told him it would. the surgery was not successful, news that was devastating to pardus. >> i guess he thought that she was suffering a lot and that she wasn't going to be able to

ballots in early voting. garrett county in western maryland had the highest with nearly 40%. former governor bob ehrlich has released an outline of plans that he has for his new administration if he gets his old job back. ehrlich released his road map to 2020. in it, he is proposing the value for the dollar initiative. it will basically align government spending with revenues by delivering services for residents at the price that they are willing to pay. his plan also includes the 1% reduction in the sales tax and doubling the number of charter schools in the state of maryland. ♪ [music] ♪ >> this is so cute. elmo visited a baltimore city elementary school to celebrate early americaning success in maryland. after all, elmo is from
