and charged with disorderly conduct and disturbing a school function. police are investigating the and bullies. the 7th grade students could face charges of their own. for a look at tonight's top stories there are questions about the security at johns hopkins hospital after a man shot a doctor, killed his mother and then turned the gun on himself. we now know that paul par 'tis used a very small handgun which was easily concealed. johns hopkins released a statement referring to the possible use of metal detectors calling them unreasonable for a hospital their size. dr. david cohen is in fair condition at hopkins. baltimore state's attorney patricia jessamy has conceded ending a 15 year record. she defended her record but says she is moving forward and not looking back. challenger gregg bernstein is expected to win the election in

the heavily democratic city. a late summer storm threw new york city for a loop last night and tonight they are still wondering what hit them. it happened at rush hour when the skies went black. the heavens opened up and the winds began to howl. it was over in 15 minutes, but that was long enough to up root hundreds of trees destroy numerous cars smash windows and kill at least one person. the big apple picks up the pieces. >> oh, my god, this is a tornado. >> reporter: as menacing midwest like weather moved over manhattan new yorkers buckled down. >> started screaming there's a tornado i'm in the middle of the tornado. it was just black. >> reporter: the storm hit new york city rush hour thursday evening. downing trees riping roofs off buildings and flipping tractor- trailers like they were toys. tornado warnings were issued around 5:30 as 100 miles per hour winds gusted through city streets.

in this neighborhood in key west high winds brought down giant trees power lines fell knocking out power and one tree crunched this van nobody was inside so nobody was hurt here. >> the wind came tore everything down like a pair of scissors. >> reporter: new york's iconic skyline lit up with lightning 300 strikes in 15 minutes. train service halted on the long island railroad. tens of thousands of customers stranded on the largest commuter railroad in the nation. the streets didn't fare much better. a pennsylvania woman who pulled over to ride out the storm was killed by a falling tree in queens, new york. more than 25,000 in the city still have no power. >> we'll get power back, the trees will regrow. >> reporter: the same storm system moved through ohio hours earlier. by day break the damage was he

evident. in ohio neighborhoods are scattered with downed trees after several tornadoes touched down. you can see debris scattered around damaged homes and trees snapped in half. more than 1300 people are still without power following that storm. hopefully weather like that won't disrupt a great event hitting the chesapeake bay this weekend. swim across america is holding its fir ever event in the baltimore area. that swim will raise money for cancer research. one of the people swimming is our very own brave meteorologist wyatt everhart. he has been putting long hours in preparation for this race. >> reporter: i hope i'm ready. i put about 7 weeks of training in at the pool i got kind air late start. we're going to see what happens. we're going to have some really cool interviews in just a second. you'll hear from some of the swimmers three generations. let's get a quick check of your weather. today was a much nicer day than yesterday. in fact we were going to be

down here yesterday it didn't happen with the showers and storms. we were up into the 80-degree range this afternoon. as we zoom out a little bit you can see skies are a little gray at times today but we're seeing a little bit of clearing do going on right now it sets the stage for an awfully nice weekend we expect no big weather systems in the next couple of days. this evening we're talking about 70s, nice evening and again temperatures pleasant, breezy, but a gorgeous friday night. so you have to love that. let's get to some very special swimmers and some people that have been very involved in this. betsy, alice to your right and fran even further to the right. three generations of jeron i can. >> and up dike, yes. >> reporter: you really held a lot to help set up this thing. talk about your coach at the event bringing this to baltimore and swimming in it too talk about that. >> i've done the swim up in long island three different times and i felt it was time to

bring it down to baltimore. john my coach and i i planted the seed, the idea and we've run with it. it's been a big effort but well worth while. >> reporter: you were saying hey baltimore a town with a lot of water and a lot of places to swim and huge hospitals and of course we have michael phelps you were key in helping get him involved. >> we were able to get michael phelps involved, his coach bob bowman was supportive of the idea and endorsed it and helped us get michael here for the event on sunday. so we're very excited about that. >> reporter: betsy i mean three generations all three are going to hit the water at the same time. is that what we're going to see on camera sunday morning? >> yeah. i think so. we should all start at the same time. i don't know if we'll end it the same time. >> reporter: you too fran right. you're right in there with them. >> i'm right in there. i'm the example to keep going right. >> reporter: that's great. all generations and that's the great thing about swimming it's something you can do really
