bernstein, and i advised him i was conceded and pledged my support for smooth transition let's let us join together to fight for the future of this city. >> big shake up in the city's top prosecutor's office setting aside any challenging of the vote patricia jessamy concedes the race for baltimore city state attorney. i'm christian schaffer. jest jessamy was facing more than 1300 vote deficit after 15 years as city state's attorney. she's ready to move forward. jeff hager has more on her decision. >> at this time i want to thank the citizens of baltimore city for giving me the opportunity to serve. it has been a labor of love. >> reporter: and with that baltimore city state's attorney patricia jessamy announced she had telephoned her opponent gregg bernstein and had conceded the race to retain her office of 15 years. the incumbent says she learned a long time ago to let life's

turns make her better, not bitter. and she's now prepared to focus upon her future. >> i am definitely not going quietly into the night. i am a public servant by nature, and there is an initiative that i have been working on that i'm going to volunteer initially my time towards and it is that fifth sunday to violence initiative. >> reporter: having spent time putting criminals behind bars she wants to reach out to children to help them grow into solid citizens and not cold- blooded killers. she's asking her supporters to follow suit. >> i'm going to challenge the public. so if there's somebody out there today who is dissatisfied with what happened during this election, my thing is don't let us be fighting for votes. let us join together to fight for the future of this city and that means fight for our children. >> reporter: at a news conference later in the day

jessamy's opponent had this to say about her concession. >> mrs. jessamy called me to pledge her support and cooperation once the transition period begins after the november election. in the interim she and i will be meeting to ensure a smooth transition. i'd like to thank mrs. jessamy for her years of dedicated service to the community and for helping me to begin a dialogue about the important issues of public safety raised during the campaign. >> reporter: in baltimore jeff hager abc 2 news. while mrs. jessamy has pledged to move on she says her legal team will quote continue to machine for the orderly completion of the process to assure that every vote is accounted for. now you'll remember there was tension in the campaign this summer when city police commissioner fred bale federal put up lawn signs endorsing bernstein. he praised jessamy for her service. >> this city has a debt of

and it's back to the relative calm of johns hopkins normal hustle. but more details are coming out about how paul par 'tis was able to critically wound a doctor, kill his mother, then himself just outside and in room 873 of the nelson building. police say he was registered to carry a gun by the state of virginia and legally bought this type of very small handgun a couple of years ago, small enough to easily conceal if police say that was his intent. >> i don't know, we don't know yet if it was in his daily routine coming and visiting his mother that he always had that gun. was this an anomaly in his behavior, while police try to answer that question they investigate security practices. they intrude security officers

with baltimore city police officers a partnership that commissioners said worked flawlessly on thursday allowing for the hurried but organized response. >> initial response to this the communications between the bpd and hopkins in particular hopkins security i'm going to bet on parallel. >> reporter: while both the hospital and police are proud of the reaction, prevention remains at issue as many are asking how he into the facility with the gun in the first place. there are 80 entrances serving 80,000 a week. metal detectors are unreasonable. quote, hospitals are as must remain places of hope and healing that are open to the public. they cannot be turned into armed citadels. it goes on to say, nevertheless while we continue to have full confidence in our security staff and their procedures, we

chesapeake bay. meadowbrook aquatic fitness center. someone taking part is our own wyatt everhart. he's out at meadowbrook. it's a great day for it sunday looks pretty good too. >> reporter: absolutely christian. beautiful day for it and you know meadowbrook aquatic center has been playing such a huge role not just in terms of the training. for all of the swimmers especially rookies like me. you can see high speed swimmers these guys are unbelievable. the bottom line is one of the big parts of the swim on sunday morning will of course be at gibson island and chesapeake. but also here at meadowbrook a lot of inland swimmers we hear 80 to a hundred right here at this facility. i want to bring in dr. john burton. dr. burton i hear you have an amazing team assembled that has done a tremendous amount with swim across america. baltimore's first ever. >> yes we do. johns hopkins bayview medical center 21 of us are swimming mostly physicians but not entirely. three of our children swimming

along with one of my grand sons and some colleagues and friends, physicians, scientists and other colleagues, so it's a great team. >> reporter: dr. burton i have to ask you as a swimmer and man who has treated so many people with cancer for decades what does it mean to have the swim in baltimore. >> it's very important. cancer research is so precious and these kind of fundraisers help the scientists create new knowledge where they couldn't go through a grant. it allows them to think out of the box. so for me swimming for my many colleagues and friends two of my very close friends and physician colleagues are struggling today with nonoperable noncurable cancer, and really dedicating it to them and the many patients that we've taken care of over these many years. so, we're in it with our hearts. >> reporter: dr. burton we'll

incident he was assigned to 63rd signal battalion. since the war began more than 4,000 men and women have lost their lives in iraq 68 of them from maryland. tonight police in anne arundel county are investigating a sexual assault. victim told police she was looking for her boyfriend near the intersection of scott lane and saltoun avenue in odenton when three men dragged her into a dark area and raped her. miss searched the area for suspects but didn't find them they are asking for anyone with information 0 to call the anne arundel sex unit. if you drive around the toll plaza near francis scott key bridge tonight expect to see a lot of police presence to prevent alcohol related deaths. police will be conducting so bright checkpoints. last year the maryland transportation police arrested more than 900 impaired drivers and issued more than 2400 dui citations. wouldn't it be nice to pull up to a parking meter instead of putting in money you got to enjoy a nice park setting. >> it's happening all across

event. it's been fabulous trip and everybody is so excited. to get ready for the event, you had to swim. my beginners started by meeting me i'll be here once a week but you have to swim 3 or 2 times more a week to get fit. those who are going to participate on sunday have been putting in the hours, the work and they are loving it felt the benefits of it physically, emotionally and excitement for the whole event. eric it's been an incredible transformation for a lot of people. i have to ask you, i mean, there's 500 swimmers for gibson island for the open bay swim. one three miles open water there's going to be a hundred swimmers at meadowbrook on sunday morning. quickly the transformation you've seen in a lot of nonswimmers i haven't swam in 10 years even they i didn't do that much. talk about the transformation. >> first day they showed up scared to death of me and scared of the water. so now i see a whole new confidence and excitement that

i hadn't seen before. and i think they should feel very proud of themselves as i feel for them for what they have accomplished so far. even this event the actual swim is a big deal. >> it's the process that got them to this point that has been tremendous. and you all don't see the sweat and tears that these people have put in. >> reporter: we have to mention you have recently battled breast cancer yourself this has a special meaning for you the big swim. >> it does for me but i consider myself very lucky. i was found early being treated very well. there are so many people that i know personally family members and did friends and colleagues and swimmers everybody. we're all touched about it. so to be able to be part of this it touches everybody. there isn't anyone who hasn't dealt with cancer of some sort firsthand or a close relative we're all fighting it together. >> reporter: it's what it's all about annie thanks very much for helping all the

swimmers including me. >> you better start swimming now. >> reporter: not going to happen now. let's start off with the swim forecast for gibson island it looks pretty good for, annie is giving me water effects. it's definitely looking great for the swimmers. water temp 73. air temp 70 that early in the morning. as we take a look at chesapeake beach skies beginning to clear off. current conditions winds are still a little breezy out of the west northwest right now. and in baltimore temperatures will be cooling through the 70s this evening. let's show you the high temperature today across the state. not bad. low 80s. some spots only into the upper 70s. zoom you out here i want to show you the overall weather pattern and the bottom line is this is good. this is a great set up for the last weekend of summer 2010. can you believe it. it's here. and the weather looks fantastic as that front pushes south high pressure rolls in for saturday and sunday.

going to mean sunshine for the swim sunday morning. let's take you back down show you the models. you can see things are definitely looking nice and clear overnight tonight. these clouds kind of break up get out of here. we should see more sun tomorrow and a lot of sunshine as we go forward into sunday. we have to bring it back out to the tropics real quick here. such an unusual situation. category 3 hurricane igor as of this afternoon pushing up into bermuda this weekend it's going to be a rough time out there. we've also got carl down there in the caribbean sea. so the bottom line is as we give you the forecast here things are looking clear tonight and into the weekend looking for better weather tomorrow right into saturday night and the 7-day forecast also showing some very, very good weather as we roll into even early next week. that's going to do it for now from meadowbrook in mount washington we're all set for the swim across america coming up sunday morning. we'll head back to you. thanks, wyatt.

bob ehrlich pretends to be for the working guy... but he's not on our side. i thought i knew bob ehrlich, but then i found out... he raised property taxes on every maryland family... and business. he increased college tuition... by 40%. 40%. and i thought i knew bob ehrlich. he was against raising the minimum wage. made $2.5 million... working for a lobbying firm. $2.5 million? he's not really on my side. with this tough economy, we really need a governor on our side.

that's in andy harris' unfair tax plan. 23% sales tax. a 23% sales tax will cut my business in half. would be devastating. andy harris' 23% sales tax absolutely makes no sense. 23% sales tax would really make things unaffordable. that's too high for the average american out here. i don't know how we would manage it really. don't like that idea. we can't afford andy harris' idea. i'm frank kratovil and i approve this message.
