today the government revealed the latest numbers on deaths blamed on distracted drivers. take a look at this. this young driver is caught texting and driving and then go over to this shot of a bus driver reading an electronic book while behind the wheel. new government numbers show distracted driving killed half a million people and injured half a million more. public service mounts and tougher state laws. russell lost his daughter while driving to meet her wedding planner. >> we were very, very angry. we could not believe that our daughter could be taken from us by someone who is text.

maryland's most powerful doppler radar. >> abc 2 news is brought to you by purdue perfect portions. ready when you are. >> in tonight's health alert an obesity epidemic has become an alarming trend, a health crisis in united states with weight loss drugs and surgeries becoming more and more popular. while a lot of people are turning to bariatric procedures to help them, they find weight loss surgeries in teenagers has increased. >> reporter: weight loss surgery has become a popular option for obese people needing to lose weight. now 25% of american adolescents are overweight and they found that surgery is even on the 'rise among obese teens.

500 california teenagers, aged 13 to 20 years old, underwent surgery between 2005 and 2007. the fda has not approved the procedure for kids but gastric banding, where a band is placed around the upper stomach, increased 7 fold during the two- year study period. white teens underwent 65% of the weight loss surgeries, even though they make up only 28% of all obese teens. and the surgery was disproportionately under used by non-hides and boys. although researchers found low rates of problems and complications with the surgery they said that more research needs to be done to ensure its safety and efficiency in add oh less environmentalists, with this medical minute i'm dr. timothy johnson. well supporters say it is fast-growing, tasty and beautiful. but supporters call it the franken fish and they are asking the fda to not approve genetically altered salmon.
