issued a travel alert for japanese citizens living or traveling in europe. continual generals reports indicate terrorist may be plotting atax on public place overseas. abc's emily schmidt reports. >> reporter: the government alert to u.s. citizens living or touring europe is rare. it says u.s. citizens should take every precaution to be aware of their surroundings and to adopt appropriate safety measures to protect themselves while traveling. but the state department add it's not intended to stop americans traveling to europe. >> you can go and be safe. you have to be smart. >> reporter: the government advices recommendationter when the american -- register with the american embassy. stay away from unattended package. and the alert is after weeks of vugs between the white house and u.s. intelligence communities. the caution makes sense say experts. >> you are not interfering with their lives, and in today's political reality in the united states, the executive branch simply doesn't have much

basketball. devonte collapsed during practice with the harford community college team. this morning, his family and teammates are trying to come to terms with what happened. it was the first practice for the team. he was a freshman on campus for a month, but it was enough to make an impact on those around him. after collapsing, he was taken up toker chesapeake medical center where he died. his coach says he was not aware of illness or preexisting conditions. >> he actually took a physical. he did some conditioning of course on his own since we are not allowed to work with them before october 1st. and then he showed up to practice. >> reporter: there's no word on the cause of bundley's death. team put the season on hold until coaches and players are fit to return to the court. now grief counselors will be available at the college throughout the week for those who need to talk. in the studios, sherrie johnson, abc2 news. at 6:34, stories make headlines this morning. students and staff and community members lit candles last night

and stayed silence for 30 minutes in the memory of tyler clementi. he was a stew antirutgers university who jumped to his death off the gw bridge after his roommate streamed video of he and another man being intimate online. hundreds of rutgers university students gathered to remember him. and the organizers are calling for more support and understanding for the gay and lesbian community. scary moments aboard a frontier airlines flight bound for denver. the flight traveling from mexico to denver when a child became ill. officials said passengers were held at gate while the child was examined by paramedics. passengers say during the flight they could hear attendants talking to doctors on the ground and once the plane landed, the medics came on board and treated the sick child. passengers learned late that's right girl was suffering from hand, foot and mouth disease. the disease is common among children and causes fevers and lifters in the mouth. blisters in the mouth. could do you play fantasy

city corruption and joins with us more. >> reporter: councilwoman helen holt n is set to appear in court to answer charges she violated campaign finance laws. it is the last chapter in the corruption scandal that ousted sheila dixon from office. prosecutors say holton asked two city developers to pay for a political poll that exceeded campaign finance limits. they allege it was the favor in exchange for helton -- holton's help for tax breaks. she is accused of having ron lipscomb and bakery king john paterakis to fund the poll during reelection campaign. lipscomb and paterakis plead guilty to the charge. if convicted, holton wouldn't have to leave office because it's misdemeanor. prosecutors are trying to get a more serious bribee charge reinstate after the judge dismissed the case. the trial will begin at nine this morning at courthouse east and the cates will be heard by dennis sweeney who preside over dixon's trial. linda so, abc2 news. 6:46. police are investigating a shooting that happened in east

baltimore. we are told a baltimore city schools police officer shot a robbery suspect. this happened at the hartford -- harford road family dollar store a person outsighted store witnessed it going down -- outside the store witnessed it going down. he ran across the road for help ants office he ever jumped into action firing his handgun after one of the suspects made a threat. >> really good work by the citizen. they saw something and saw a police officer next door and the police officer went into action and engaged three armed suspects. police say the sus secretary is going to make it -- the suspect is going to make it. and one teenage is behind bars. another is dead following a shooting here in harford county. according to police, shakir wingate was found in the 12 hundred block of clover valley way in edge woo. he had been shot several times. and police responded just before

9:00 saturday night. police have since arrested 18-year-old michael jones, junior. they have not determined the motive but they believe they knew one another. 6:47. today friends and familiar lave baltimore city police officer killed in a car crash will pay their final respects. officer james fowler died when his pickup truck ran off the road while he was on his way to a training seminar at penn state university. a funeral mass will be held at 11:30 at st. marks in catonsville followed by a procession in timonium. drivers in the area should expect traffic delays around the time. police are investigating westminster first murderer in five years. 40-year-old steven hopson was found dead in his apartment on east main street on saturday morning. neighbors reported hearing two men screaming at each other before the police arrived. >> i heard people storming up and down the steps in there and then it sounded like people were slamming the doors or kicking

them. >> right now police are not saying how the victim died. but they say that he had blood on his shirt and pants as well. we have an update on the massive building fire in dundalk on friday. a wall left standing had to be knocked down yesterday. firefighters say it spoas posed a danger to surrounding homes. flames were so heavy the fire knocked down 90% of the building. no one was injured. homes by the area were not destroyed. the fire is considered very suspicious. the names of 105 fallen firefighters weraed to the national memorial out and the national fallen firefighters yesterday. we had a memorial service out there honoring 80 who died in the line of duty last year. plus, 25 from previous years. >> gl high waters and two water rescues caused a richmond fire department to require a permit for those on thing to use the james river. that warning comes on the heels of a rescue over the weekend where area students are strand

my dad is the supervisor of a train station and my mom's a teacher. my dad's an auto technician. my mom's a receptionist. i'm not sure i would have been able to afford college without the tuition freeze. while tuition in other states is rising out of reach... governor o'malley made the tough choice to freeze tuition.
