an update now on breaking news out of frederick county. a frederick soldier has been killed in afghanistan. sergeant first class lance vogue letter died thursday from sounds he curved suffered when insurgents attacked his unit. he was part of the iraquier reg itself based out of georgia. he was on his 12th deployment in support of war on terror. he had 4 previous to iraq and 7 to afghanistan. he leaves behind a wife and two children. since returning to class at harford technical high school, they found crisis teams waiting for them after the death of a former classmate on friday he died just across the street from the high school. devonte was a multisport athlete playing high school football as quarterback and played center on basketball miss agriculture year. >> the whole school is in mourning. the freshmen did not know him

well but the sophomores, juniors and seniors, when you have a student that is that active in three sports, football, basketball, and track, when you look at the numbers in there, that's probably 150 different students that are involved in those three activities. >> there are tentative plans to hold a joint memorial services for both schools at harford community college coming up a little bit later on this week. well friends, family and fellow officers said a final good-bye to a fellow police officer james fowler, he died one week ago when his truck crashed into a barrier in central pennsylvania. he was on his way to penn state to participate on a training exercise in accident reconstruction. he was laid to rest at servais list valley memorial gardens. he leaves behind a wife and two children. in 'em meltsburg 80 new names are add todd the national

firefighters memorial in maryland over the weekend. they join the names of 3400 other firefighters who have died in the line of duty since the memorial was established. it was an emotional ceremony for the family members of the fallen firefighters who came from around the country. they were each given hallows and a folded american flag to honor their loved ones. one city school's resource officer is on leave after a shooting last night. police say the officer was approached around 8:30 last night and was told that a nearby store was being robbed by three armed men, police say one of the armed men threatened the officer and the officer fired. he was struck in the upper body, the others fled. the man was taken to a hospital. the school officer is on routine leave penning the outcome of the investigation. another robbery to tell you about. this one at peer 1 imports at laurel. that's where an employee told them a man entered the story, purchased a few items and left only to return with a gun

demanding cash. the suspect ordered the female employee to the ground and took cash from the register and then took off. police are checking surveillance video for any clues. >> the baltimore county council is expected to pass legislation tonight banning the sale and possession of k2. it is a marijuana-like substance that can be easily purchased by children. it apparently turned up at a store in catonsville. the legislation appears to have broad support among council members. now it would ban the sale of any substance containing chemical come pounds that have the same effect as marijuana. a spokesman for the o'malley campaign says president barack obama will campaign with the first-term democrat this week. the governor has a campaign event with the president scheduled for october 7th, that's this thursday, but the details on where the event will take place have not been confirmed. president obama says o'malley has made some tough decisions to prior tides education, safety and job creation during some very difficult financial

times. well just exactly what does a vote for or against question a in anne arundel county mean? the battle over slots at arundel mills is raging, the ad is hard to miss and the cornish company who plans to develop slots near the mall came out against the negative ads saying they are miss informing voters. in reality, they said the slots would not be in the mall, and there would be no legal way to relocate them to laurel park like the ads suggest. but the campaign succeeds and people vote against slots in the mall. they said it would cost millions in lost revenue for the county. >> and it means the zoning has to start over from scratch, it means many many years, i have to be honest with you, many many many years of delay for us; for the county. >> the no slots at the mall campaign was not available for an on-camera interview but did send a statement which says in part "cordish is trying to stop

free speech. the best way county voters can fight back is to stop cordish's plan to put slots at the arundel mills mall." we look forward to winning this battle at the ballot box," they have been helping to fund the no slots campaign at the mall. governor martin o'malley says he would support a 60-day moratorium on foreclosures at maryland. they called on the governor and attorney general to impose the 60-day moratorium. he points out lenders in multiple states may have fraudulent reacted to begin foreclosure proceedings against some homeowners. as a result families may have been wrongly evicted from their homes. those evictions may be affecting affecting the value of nearby homes and the tax ravens they depend rate. when it comes to seeing your driveway it's something most of us will hire someone to take care of. be careful who you hire, you

i think we need tax breaks to send kids to college. so i worked for a $2,500 tax credit to help pay for college. fought to get pell grants expanded and insisted that college loans go directly to kids instead of through banks. i'm barbara mikulski. i approve this message. because it's not about the next election, it's about the next generation. right? yeah!!!

two governors, two different approaches. even in good times bob ehrlich didn't make education a priority. he increased college tuition by 40%, cut school construction by $200 million, and ehrlich voted to eliminate the department of education while serving in congress. but in the toughest of times, martin o'malley has made record investments in public schools, new school construction, and o'malley froze college tuition four years in a row. with martin o'malley, our children always come first.

chances are if they are not a legitimate business, they'll scatter quickly. >> i have seen situations where while you're in calling the home imimprovement commission the guy has taken off down the street. so it really can, it really can make a difference in terms of stopping the scam from going forward. >> reporter: other things that can make a difference? well asking for the contractor's license number and verifying it with the department of labour licensing and regulation. if you're in howard county you can ask for their county administration card too. that way if a fly by night favor offers to seal your pavement you won't get rolled over in a scam. >> now rebecca bowman says seniors and the disabled are scammed in targets like this because they can't get it done on their own. we have also heard of similar victims regarding gutter repair and other home improvement offers. >> now, maryland's most powerful doppler radar, and the forecast certified most

around baltimore. we cleared off here in the last 60 to 70 minutes, there are more showers still again through cecil county, most of the rain, a little bit of this reaching down into kent county, eastern shore, caroline, queen anne ans, we're all feeling that cold north wind and certainly the wind chill factor is ever present out there. temperatures low 450, flirting with the 40s already in places like york, that gives you kind of an idea what we can expect later tonight. and temperatures right now locally are in the mid-to low 50s and in fact our high temperatures today only about a degree or two above these numbers. all right. let's take you down neighborhood by neighborhood. mt. vernon back through federal hill. an improvement tomorrow, we'll see some sun break through. we should find low 60s, then as we take you north, apg and back out toward them, the last of the rain now. they'll see some sun breaking through the clouds here and again pushing up close to 60

maybe cooler in the northeast corner, cordeva, 61, st. michael's 62, we should see a little more sun especially off to the east here. satellite radar, no sun breaks in the clouds until you get way down in virginia and as we take you on a little wider perspective bottom line is this. large circulation, this area of low pressure is just not gonna let go completely until probably at least wednesday and the bottom line is there will be some wrap around showers behind this thing, pushing into baltimore tomorrow night. we'll get briefly into a dry spot through the day tomorrow and that high pressure eventually will work all the way in later this week making for improved weather. but tonight, and in the tomorrow, chilly north wind flow on the eastside of that high. our future weather, bottom line, clouds hold tough tonight but we stay generally dry tomorrow, mostly cloudy, more sun towards the eastern shore, wrap around showers possible tomorrow evening but they won't be particularly heavy. tonight a bit of rain, northeast corner of the state,

people at the smithsonian says he found a fossil dating back about 160 million years. it happened at a dinosaur park in laurel. although the boy found a 1 1/2" jaw bone last month officials have now confirmed it was part of a juvenile meat-eating dinosaur. this isn't the first time that someone has found a fossil at the park. last year a 9-year-old from virginia found a dinosaur tail bone. >> >> let's check out how the drive home is looking to be the. you're looking at 195 north of -- 95 north as traffic is moving but moving kind of slowly.
