closed and baltimore city argone drive closed between loch raven boulevard and hillan road. back to you. >> thanks. now to a developing story out of new york. officials are hoping to crackdown on the obesity problem. they want to ban people who use food stamps from buying sugary drinks. and some support the idea, abc news mary snow say critics are questioning if it's the best way to attack the epidemic. >> reporter: if new york getsites its way, buying soda or sugared sweetened drinks with more than 10 calories been banned if you use food stamps. new york mayor and state governor are trying to reduce obesity and making their case to the federal government which administers the food stamp program and currently only bans alcohol and cigarette sales. >> for the government to make the decision that shouldn't include something else that the experts all tell you is very detrimental to your health and contribute together number one public health issuing remain in

the city and country getting worse. it's not unreasonable and it's not picking on anybody. >> reporter: the city health department reports that 58% of adults in new york city are either overweight or obese. among public school children that, rate is close to 40%. >> soda is a huge problem. >> reporter: christy is a nutritionist who has been working to reduce high obesity rates in harlem. one big problem she says is healthier food is more expensive leaving people with few options and soda doesn't help. >> soda has more calories. and the more calories you drink, you don't compensate for them the same way as you do when you eat more calories. >> reporter: but not all public health doctors are applauding the city's move to ban soda for those on food stamp. >> if we could and it would work, is it the right thing to do. >> reporter: is it? >> i am not so sure. >> reporter: the doctor is work in harl tom reduce diabetes which is associated with obesity. >> food stamps pay fos a bucket of junk food and unhealthy high

now a developing story in baltimore county. the suspect in a huge pot bust ran such a major operation police say the electric bill was 1700 dollars a month. the problem for the suspects hard to hide the smell of so much drugs. abc2 news sherrie johnson explains how they found the pot . >> reporter: thanks to a neighbor with a keen sense of smell, the operation came to a halt. this morning two people are facing felony drug charges along with a 17-year-old who is being charged as juvenile. police say they were growing a huge amount of marijuana in a warehouse in an industrial area off north point boulevard in baltimore county. inside the warehouse, police found hundreds of plants of marijuana and systems for heating and lighting and irrigation and ventilation. the power bill for the

warehouse just $1700 a month. they also found 648 pounds of processed marijuana. that's worth 3.5 million dollars. it was hiden in crates lined with coffee grounds to mask the odor but a tip from from a neighbor to police brought the operation down. >> i just wish that it was in a different neighborhood i wish it didn't happen at all. >> there's families in here and elderly in here. you know, and as a rule, we don't see anything like this happening around here. >> reporter: twite dolts in the case are out on bail right now. they face ten years in prison on drug distribution charges. the baltimore county state attorney is trying to increase penalties given the amount of the drugs. in the studios, sherrie johnson, abc2 news. baltimore county police need help finding a man they say beat an elderly man to death earlier this year. take a look at this picture. suspect is gary late um police say in april he beat john sandy who later died from his

injuries. police say lathem has been seen has knowns to living in dundalk or essex will call the apprehension task force at 410-637-8970. the family crisis center in baltimore county is getting much needed help. they received more than 100,000 dollars in federal funding to help stop domestic violence. the nonprofit organization in dundalk has been struggling with the funding shortfall this year. a former victim of domestic violence talked about her ordeal with an abusive husband. >> the worst violence happened after our son was born. when my son was 3 1/2-month- old, just an infant, i knew it's to leave. it's no choice. i left our home with him in my arms 78 dollars in my bank account and two suitcases. i was terrified and didn't know what i was going to do.

away a lexus with damaged front end. investigators say when the police arrived, a woman was sitting in the driver's seat. they took her into custody and charged her with dui. shortly before 8 last night, dc firefighters put out a fire in the department of commerce building on constitution avenue. officials say it started on the third floor where asbestos removal work was being done. when the fire was out, fire feeters went through decontamination process. now if you ride the trains to work, don't be surprised to see additional security personnel on your trip around the station. u.s. authorities say they plan a law enforcement surge along amtrak routes today. in an exercises called operation rail safe, uniformed officers will have a visible presence along amtrak routes. amtrak counterparts all over europe are also taking part in the operation. officials say the exercises was long planned and is not connected in anyway to the recent terror threats in

in news make headlines around the nation this morning a. new york man shot at close range is saved by his cell phone. 54-year-old juan says a man shot him but the bullet ricocheted off the cell phone he had in his pocket. he says the shooter was a recently fired building super who he and his boss replaced.

the the gunman was five feet away from him. police have video of the shooter leaving the scene and are working on capping him. a man is in custody in santa ana after police find box of child porn in his home. and next door neighbor of the suspect was shocked to find nude photos of him with her young daughter. the 66-year-old is in jail after police say they found dozen dozens of pictures of the man with children. the kids ranged in age from 1 to 11 years old. police also found children's jewelry and dozens of toys in his apartment. police are concerned there may be other victims. a manhunt is underway for a reserve sheriff deputy from oregon suspected of murder. the 29-year-old steven crumb is considered armed and dangerous. he wanted in the death of 30-year-old jessica killian whose body was found in an unoccupied house. police say the two knew each other. killian was a bar turned and mother to a young daughter. like it or not, state of
