major campaign swing with the election just weeks away. >> democratic senate seats are most at risk in five states, including pennsylvania. that's where the president spoke over the weekend. emily schmidt is joining us from washington with more. >> today, the president is going to head to miami, key meeting of the democratic national committee then he's off to continue what will be a very busy week on this campaign trail. >> reporter: first stop, philadelphia, and it's a scene that will be repeated in at least ten states this week alone. president obama, the vice president and even the first lady all headlining rallies meant to energize the base, especially the youth vote. >> let's show washington one more time, change doesn't come from the top. it comes from the bottom. >> reporter: but that message is a harder sale than two years ago, especially for democrats in the house. a respected political report just listed 12 incumbent house members most likely to lose.

and democrats have seen a wave of republican money which they blame on a recent supreme court ruling, ending many of the restrictions on campaign spending by corporations. >> money overall is tilted in republicans' favor. >> it's incredible, republicans benefiting from secret foreign money. >> reporter: now a blistering democratic ad accusing republicans of hiding contributions. >> they won't release any information about where their campaign mon is coming from. and that's at the core of the problem here. >> this is a desperate political ploy from the white house to distract attention from the failed economic policies. >> reporter: president on a cross country sprint to the election, now just 22 days away. and the president is going to be talking about the nation's mayors and governors. the plan is as touted as something that will help put the unemployed back to work.

rob and mike? >> emily schmidt live in washington. thank you. one republican candidate not expected to oust the democrats is new york's carl paladino. who is running for governor. he's sparking new controversy this morning after a campaign stop in brooklyn. paladino boasted that he had boycotted new york's gay pride parade and then he turned to the examples of what parents and schools should show to children. >> we don't want them to be brainwashed that they thing that homosexuality is an equally valid action. it isn't. >> paladino did say that his approach is to live and let live, but has vowed as governor, he would veto any bill that could legalize gay marriage or civil unions. also a republican candidate from ohio is also finding himself in hot water. "the atlantic" magazine said rich ihop wore a nazi uniform. he said he's just likes history

and did it for his young son. the next leader of north korea has made his public debut at the largest military parade in that country's history. kim jong-un is the son of kim jong-il. bob woodruff reports from north korea. >> reporter: rigid and well rehearsed north korea's formidable military machine was on parade. tens of thousands of troops, goose stepping with such force, the ground shook below their feet. i have been to this square many times, but i've never been able to get this close to the troops. they've got the navy, airport, infantry, artillery, doctors and nurses. and, of course, tanks. high above the square, the dear leader, a frail-looking kim jong-il, and a few feet away, his song, kim jong-un, now

unquestionab unquestionably, the leader. what they did do which is new to us, they put the general between the two of them first saluted to kim jong-il and then saluted his son. until recently kim jong-un was an obscurity. never seen in public, a mystery even to north koreans. he is believed to be about 27 years old, the youngest of kim jong-il's three sons. his two older brothers passed over. regarding as unfate for command. >> he's most like him in terms of personality, temperament and everything else. so just based on that we're not looking at a sort of a different north korea. we're looking at sort of a mini-me. >> reporter: he is said to be a fan of american basketball. last month, the younger kim began his military career at the lofty rank of four-star general. now, he's poised to take the helm of a reclusive rogue state armed with nuclear weapons.

bob woodruff, abc news. north korea. over the weekend the wife of chinese dissident liu xiaobo visited him in prison to tell him he won the nobel peace price. this morning, agents are standing guard outside her apartment where he is under virtual house arrest. he took place in protests in tiananmen square. he's been in prison ever since. the stepmother of a missing girl is now believed to be a person of interest in the missing girl's case. ten-year-old zahra clare baker. she was first reported missing saturday. at first, investigators considered it a case of stranger abduction, but then they found inconsistencies in the stepmother's story. sea world orlando is celebrating their newest arrival, 7-foot long, 350-pound

calf born over the weekend. it's too soon to tell if it's a boy or girl. they're monitoring the newborn to make sure it's healthy. the newborn is baby number seven for the 34-year-old mom. the father is the 1,200-pound whale that killed the sea world trainer. and now, showers moving into pittsburgh, new york and philly, and washington by tonight. thunderstorms around tulsa, houston and kansas city, showers meanwhile in the northern rockies, record highs across the midwest. and southeast. >> mid-80s in new orleans, atlanta and baltimore. 73 in new york. indianapolis hits 82. fargo, 81, and the twin cities, 77. phoenix and sacramento hover around the 90-degree mark. it's just 71 in salt lake city and 59 in seattle. and coming up next, the newest smartphone is ready for today's unveiling but can it outsmart the iphone? the excitement is building in chile, above and below ground.

today. tokyo's nikkei exchange is closed but hong kong's hang seng is higher in late trading. in london the ftse opened higher. and wall street, of course, is closed today for the columbus day holiday. last week, the dow gained 176 points closing above 11,000. the nasdaq index picked up 31 points last week. if you drive, you probably noticed that gas prices are going up. aaa says the price of gasoline is now at $2.80 a gallon. that's 22 cents higher than a year ago. microsoft is set to unveil the new windows phone 7 today. it has a touch screen and an entirely new operating system. it's also expected to be an xbox games platform. the phone is expected in stores in the u.s. and around the world in the next few weeks. and for the second straight weekend "the social network" was

>> reporter: attached to the winch, the rescue capsule. a very cramped 21-inch tube. if all goes according to plan, they will start to bring the men out on wednesday. officials say the miners are on remarkably good spirits. >> we begun to talk to them regarding the proper order of rescue. and they were fighting against us yesterday because every one of them wanted to be at the end of the line, not at the beginning. >> reporter: that follows this dramatic moment saturday morning as the rescue drill broke through the cement below. on the surface, a spontaneous celebration agency the drilling team that has worked day and night got the news. the tolling of the bell announced the breakthrough to the family at the makeshift camp that has been their home for the 65 nervous days. the 33 miners will be emerging not only to their families, but to an army of journalists.

more than 1,000 accredited media here from 33 different countries. they've come to this remote desert to report here on this real life drama. because there is so much interest, they are going to offer a live satellite free to any broadcaster around the world. what that means that these 33 men who went into this mountain side august 5th as poor, an anonymous miners will be watched by as many as those who watch the academy awards or the world cup. >> and that rescue capsule is expected to rotate 350 degrees from 10 to 12 times as its finally pulled to the surface. police in mexico say they're looking for two brothers in connection with the shooting death of an american jet skier. david hartley hasn't been seen his wife reported the attack. almost two weeks ago. at first, the authorities doubted the wife's claims since

nobody or jet ski has been found. now, the mexican government has launched a federal investigation into the incident. the number of potentially dangerous mistakes by air traffic controllers has soared over the last year. "the washington post" says air traffic mistakes are up 51% over last year. the real number's even higher because some errors are not included under a new system that encourages controllers to report their mistakes. still, the faa says that air travel is safer than ever. brett favre and the vikings are taking on the jets tonight. amid allegations of inappropriate sexual advances. favre is accused 6 sending racy voice mails and lewd pictures to a jets sideline reporter who used to work for the jets jenn sterger. the report also says that favre who is married also pursued two female massage they'res.
