abc's emily schmidt has the report. >> reporter: over the weekend, a long awaited breakthrough moment. a rescue drill reached 33 chilean mines underground for more than two months. and for families waiting on the surface, the connection is reason to celebrate. this mother of one of the miners says the lord made a miracle and they are alive. the next step is getting them home. today, workers will begin installing awin wench and a 21 inch tube to lift them as soon as wednesday. >> they will have quite a ride. it's not going to be just coming up something straight like a soda straw up to the top. >> reporter: each 2,000 foot descent will take 20 minutes. >> the process should take something in the range of 48 hours, two days from the first rescue to the last rescue. >> reporter: officials say miners are fighting about who goes first but not for the

six shootings in less than 24 hours. five people are killed. linda so is live at police headquarters where police are shake their heads along with the rest of us. linda. >> reporter: yeah, police don't have a lot to go on. they have been interviewing witnesses, but so far no arrests. police don't believe the shootings are related. the violence started early saturday on grantly avenue where man was shot and killed and on saturday night, police say a

man's body was found in an alley on north calvert street. police say that shooting may have happened on shamrock avenue where minutes before 22-year- old darryl hood was shot. about two hours later, police found another man shot to death inside a home on pressbury street. early sunday morning, two men were shot on north warwick avenue. one died and the other is expected to survive. neighbors say the violence is a reminder that people need to watch out for each other. >> we itcally don't have a lot of violent crime here. we do have crime, the break-ins and that sort of thing but typically not violent crime. >> reporter: we are live at city police headquarters, linda so, abc2 now is. and yet even more violence to tell you about a78-year-old sterling palmer was found stabbed several times on friday night right-side his home on edison highway in northeast baltimore. no word on suspects or a motive in this. >> a kidnapping suspect from

georgia is behind bars this morning in our area. maryland state police arrested 30-year-old devin pol polanco in cecil county on saturday night. his estranged wife and her two young children were in the car. she called police telling them she was being taken against her will and according to authorities, he drove to new york to give her money for food and she says she got into the car thinking they were going to the store when they began driving back to georgia. he had the heart of a champion but it was his heart that broke on the basketball floor. over the weekend, harford community college honored 18-year-old devonte bundley who collapsed back on october 1st. the medical examiner told his mom an irregular heart book took his life. team members and friends signed a ball at a memorial service for the athlete. >> the goal was to

issue and you want to keep the sun roof or windows open because of the nice temperatures. 62 in baltimore. it's a slightly cooler 58 in philly and towards pittsburgh at 56. we are matching the mark in norfolk at 62 degrees and you will notice again, a few clouds are out there. showers flaring off just offshore and this will be the focal point for developing more showers and storms as we head into the afternoon hours. bring it back wider and you will see how it extends towards the great lakes and there's an area of low refreshure back here as the frontal boundary that will see the development of some of the storms, and the front itself probably just a little further north and we have the hint in the atmosphere with the showers pushing off the delmarva coastline. cool air to the north and warm air to the south that continues to flow in that will feed the energy developing along the system. and that is what we will have to watch for this afternoon and this evening. yesterday's temperatures while we made it to 76, wide med spread 80s with 87 in columbus and 88 in louisville.

we will probably see temperatures pushing the 80s here in baltimore feeding into the developing system. our exuder -- computer model shows a few showers in the mountains. some have the slight risk of reaching severe limits which means one inch hail and winds exceeding 60 miles per hour. so there could be a little bit of damage and destruction with the storms and if the winds carry them our way, we will have to watch them and mainly towards the evening hours watch them flare up across new york and the bondry slides through the region tomorrow. so we could have another round of showers in the vicinity. not widespread outbreak but we bring in cooler air mass and we will shift the wind to the northeast and it will definitely be on the other side of normal. today, we are about 15 above normal with the two degree guaranteed high. it's the better chance of showers tonight and low to mid-60s. tomorrow, mainly in the morning hours, it could be a stray afternoon storm. we are looking for highs around 76 degrees and beyond that, we should clear it out. but look at temperatures.

much cooler on wednesday at 68. about normal but 62 on thursday. and 64 friday with temperature in the morning in the 40s and we stay dry but we stay in the 60s next weekend. here kim with traffic. >> reporter: we are pretty quiet around the baltimore metro. we had this lingering utility problem in catonsville blocking the westbound lanes of frederick road as you approach the beltway. two-way traffic gets by on the eastbound sigh. but earlier police activity has been killed at millford mill. we are on the harrisburg expressway and traffic is moving well approaching 695. stay with us, we have more of good morning, maryland, coming back after this.
