are monitored by video. they are wearing dark glasses to protect their eyes from unfamiliar daylight. good evening i'm kelly swoope. the miners have emerged looking healthier than expected, even clean shaven after their 69 day ordeal. we've been covering this story from top to bottom with coverage really beginning last night at 11:30. we've been covering it with the crew in chile. we've been following the rescue efforts. the first person emerged after 11:00 last night during our 11:00 news. we're going to pick up that coverage and we are going to go to chile to find out the status of the next person who's being rescued. >> 23 people so far. let's check in now with abc's diana >> reporter: the mood at the mine is absolutely electric. just moments ago the 24th miner was raised to safety. friends and family are overjoyed at the thought their

prayers have finally been answered. most of the trapped chilean miners have now been hoisted to safety. one by one they climbed into the steel capsule for a 15 minute ride through 2,000 feet of rock to freedom. on the surface a you for i can welcome behind every miner a survival story. the second to be rescued never lost a sense of humor. the joy to be heard on the surface even before he arrived. he brought souvenir rocks from below and handed them out to his rescuers. 63-year-old marrow gomez the oldest of the miners was 9th miner to be brought up. he was the miners' spiritual leader during their 7 o'day grueling ordeal. the youngest of the group 19- year-old jimmy sanchez is also safe. doctors had been worried about

his psychological ñiwell-being. underground he was experiencing panic attacks, anxiety and close from phobia. rescued miner number 21 wasn't greeted by his wife of 28 years. she wasn't even there. it was his mistress whom he had been secretly seeing for years who gave him a well coming hug. the miners' extraordinary story of survival and rescue have captivateed the world. their story of courage and hope have crossed all cultures and continent. and as they emerge those miners have been greeted with very nice remiss promises of free trips to greece year's worth of free sushi and free ipods. now back to you. >> tonight right here on abc 2 at 10:00 you can catch the 20/20 special miracle at the

mine. and remember abc 2 news is live streaming the whole thing on our web site go to www.wmar.com to watch as this incredible story continues to unfold. army sergeant john burno was buried at arlington cemetery. he died september 16th. his family died of hatred able ailment awaiting medical care. the sergeant was a satellite systems team chief assigned to the 63rd signal battalion in forth gordon, georgia. he was deployed in august. a full report of his death will not be completed until sometime next year. well, the city of baltimore has a new tool in the fight against gun violence. mayor stephanie rawlins-blake announced the $300,000 smart policing grant today. it is one of only 6 grants

awarded in the nation and will fund the city police department anti-gun violence efforts. >> 50% of all the people we charge with homicide each year involves more and nearly 5% of all the people we charge with nonfatal shootings in baltimore have one thing in common, prior gun arrests in their background. we want to keep these guys from reoffending again. >> now the smart policing grant will also fund the city's gun offender registry it provides intelligence to law enforcement agencies on the identity and location of convicted gun offenders. a 21-year-old man is charged in the stabbing of four men including his brother during a fight over a bar stool in college park. police say leonardo ramos is charged with assault. the fight started at the thirsty turtle bar and spilled into the street. investigators say he cut three men after they got into a

fight. when ramos' brother tried to stop him he was stabbed to. he is not a student at the university of maryland but some of the men who was injured are students. tonight all lanes are reopened in the forth mckinley tunnel after a school bus caught fire yesterday. it shut down 6 of the 8 traffic lanes and caused a major back up. maryland transportation authority police say a school bus owned by durham services caught fire in the left northbound tunnel. no children were on the bus. there was extensive damage inside including smoke damage, light fixtures melted electrical wiring and loose exterior tiles inside the tunnel. you know, what a difference a day makes especially on the temperature front today. we still had a lot of sunshine out there but temperatures running 15 to 20 degrees cooler and another 24 hours and you really won't recognize things around here in terms of the skies. let's take a look first at

temperatures out there. we're talking about 63 right now downtown compare that to about 80 to 83 this time yesterday. yeah. big change. 62 annapolis now. cambridge at 66 and b. c. hanging on to 70 they will be closely down into the 60s as well. satellite radar trend little bit of rain developing down into southern west virginia, northern central virginia. that is not going to affect us tonight but we do think it will be in here tomorrow and then a pretty big way by the afternoon. this evening 50s. mostly clear, getting chilly out there. and skies been clouding up into the day tomorrow we do expect some pretty decent rain around here more on that and a lot of wind headed our way too it's coming up. >> thanks a lot wyatt. early voting began to take on a new contract that puts performance ahead of experience for baltimore city teachers. the contract to replace experience with degrees with student test scores on performance evaluations in determining how teachers are promoted and rewarded in the

future. in an online petition some 135 teachers are calling for postponement of the regular vote. they claim that a state committee hasn't even started to figure out how the teachers will be evaluated. well, the head of the washington d. c. public school system is resigning. michelle lee made the announcement today saying the thought of not being chancellor anymore is just simply heartbreaking. lee took over one of the, would it school systems in the country in 2007 with a mandate from the mayor to improve them. since then she has improved test scores but also angered many with teacher layoffs firing and a very blunt style. >> this was not a decision that we made lightly, but it is one that i believe is absolutely essential to allow chairman gray to pursue our shared goal of unify the city behind the school efforts that are making such a large difference in the lives of the

bob ehrlich says he wants to fix maryland. but he increased state spending by record amounts. ehrlich raised $3 billion in taxes and fees... including property taxes... and a 40% increase in college tuition. and now he's made over $1 billion in new promises... with no plans to pay for them... except for cutting education. cuts that will lay off teachers and increase class sizes. that's not a budget. and bob ehrlich's not the kind of leader... we can trust.

talk about job creation. >> reporter: all that celebrity campaigning might be working. polls still show republicans with an advantage but the gap is narrowing. election day may still be 20 days away, but across the nation americans are heading to the voting booth. 40 states now including maryland have some form of early voting either in person with the voting booth or absentee ballot. in 2008 about one-third ballots cast were actually cast before election day. early voting has changed how campaigns are run. campaigning has become more expensive. candidates have to run television ads and target voters earlier and earlier. >> as soon as those ballots go out, as soon as they are mailed out. a voter can turn around and check the box a couple of days later. >> now despite the increased cost and challenges to get out

also related to rush limbaugh 10th cousins once removed. well, october is dyslexia awareness month. the association brought the filmmaker to hartford county to give special attention to the issue at the highlands school. >> reporter: harvey hubble is having fun in school. the filmmaker work opening a projects dyslexia the movie has dyslexia himself he's visiting the highlands school. >> a lot's happening but this only reaching a small number of people. >> reporter: some of the students here have dyslexia and have learned how to deal with it. >> in public school it was you would watch a movie or listen to books. i need it where i can actually see it feel it see how everything works in it. >> reporter: when some of the

production. cooler and rain heading our way. >> kelly such a change today. >> from yesterday. >> so much more crisp fall like and now we're watching some rain developing out to the west that should come through tomorrow afternoon bring us in some rain and then a breezy day on friday. so we're going to start getting these small twists in the weather. you know what i mean. have you seen what's going on in the inner harbor tonight. take a look at this. i'm not sure if it's a sail fest or what's going on to be honest with you but it's a beautiful sight there. just so many sails in the harbor and a bit a northwest breeze helping to push them along down this. man, just a terrific, terrific looking sight this. again, as we check out all the tall sailboats in the inner harbor. 64 degrees right now. humidity 43%. winds turn briefly east at 8 miles per hour but we do expect winds to pick up in a big way tomorrow afternoon and last into the day friday. friday could be a mighty

blustery day around here. look at our weather net camera through the day. a beautiful sapphire blue sky all afternoon. just really couldn't find a cloud in the sky. high pressure in control today. but we do expect that to change tomorrow. what a difference a day will make as we take you out to mt. airy. cloud less gorgeous weather but again big changes coming our way as we go into the day tomorrow. and some of those high temperatures today mid to upper 60s to low 70s across the board. chester town almost 70. cockysville to 65. the bottom line is this. these winds will be getting chillier overnight as we get the clouds and rain in here tomorrow it looks like a much cooler day. across the state we've got 60s. 64 right now in hagerstown and 65 in philly. radar is clear right now. maryland's most powerful radar we find nothing out there at the moment we do know this will

be changing into tomorrow afternoon. early look at your neighborhood forecast through south baltimore maybe a few early piece of sunshine we're talking about rain and temperatures around 60, 62 at best most of the day we'll be in the 50s tomorrow. satellite radar clear now in our state. off to the west a lot of rain beginning to develop here out towards southern west virginia, and as we zoom you out just a little bit here, you do see that storm system beginning do get its act together. actually two different circulations one down over northern georgia and the main storm system you would have to say along with a cool front marching into the midwest. whole ball of wax means this beautiful dry weather getting kicked out and replaced by stormy weather we think tomorrow night and into even the early morning hours. friday future forecast you can see as we stop it here, this is 5:00 tomorrow evening. you probably have a dry commute in the morning. the clouds will increase but wet tomorrow night for the commute and then as that storm
