especially off to the east. over on the eastern shore, you are getting the rain right now. let's take a look at exactly where that rain is on maryland's most powerful doppler radar. you can see this rain pushing steadily east. it will stay wet for the next couple hours. some of this wet weather is impacting the western shore. most of it on to the eastern shore, especially the heavier downpours confined almost to delaware and up through new jersey. that's a good thing. clouds holding tough, though. not going to see much clearing this everyoning. temperatures so cool in the wake of all that rain, we are in the mid 50s and headed into the 40s overnight tonight. rest of this evening still some showers to the east. other than that, just chilly and breezy out there. we'll talk much more about how things break down tomorrow. we get rid of the rain. we will bring in the wind. more on that in your weekend coming up. kelly. >> thanks a lot. you can always keep track of the weather by logging on to our website for the very latest

forecast. well the second gubernatorial debate this week provided marylanders with a second helping of two men who really no longer try to conceal for each other. governor martin o'malley and robert or squared off. they set off as many political fireworks as they did on monday. >> governor martin o'malley and former governor, robert ehrlich seemed cordial at first glance. when the issue of taxes came up, each attacked the other's record. >> the virginia state of commerce made fun of us. we had millionaire taxes. we've had wal-mart taxes. we've had the fourth highest tax rate in the country. we are -- we have become a tax hell for business folks. >> the former governor's credibility on this issue is nonexistent. he made the same pledge as

eight years ago. when you got in, you raise the the property tax. you raise college tuitions. you raised 30 different tolls and fees. you imposed the new tax called the flush tax. >> relentlessly, neither candidate appeared ready to concede the last word. >> the governor doesn't understand the fundamentals of state government. the state -- it appears -- >> the dualing governors current and former also proved to have a profound difference in their positions on illegal immigration. >> i don't find that clothing people and making sure we reach out with basic dignity and services is something un- american and i think that's a gross and unfair mischaracterization. >> by the way, if someone breaks into my house, is that a new member of my family that night? it's not new americans. illegals. >> at times, it seemed rather than moderators, this debate could have used referees. for example, when they looked back at their debate four years

between 1:00 and 3:00 this afternoon in north baltimore. but eventually, brian shows us there were hundreds of teachers wanting to cast their vote before the polls opened. >> the vote was set for noon, but at 11:30 this morning, there was already a line stretching down the hall and around the corner. some voted yes, others no. >> i can understand why they want to improve teacher performance and things like that, but i think it leaves us open to subjectivity by the administrators, which gives them too much power. >> the contract is performance based with built in raises and tears teachers can reach, based on how their students do. no longer pay be based on experience and education levels. it is a contract receiving national attention as it changes the incentives for educators. a land mark shift in education many of these teachers voted for. >> it's either to advance quicker with this new contract and i think if you are going

the extra mile, you should be rewarded for what you're doing. >> you think it helped young teachers in particular? >> yes. >> many in this line were sticking with a no vote. not opposed to an incentive based system, but feared the contract was rushed and have no concrete details on how teachers would be evaluated. the union says it has made several attempts to educate their educators on the deal including an informational session today during voting hours. but still, some teachers are just not sold. >> i think baltimore is a wonderful school district to work for and this is not a good thing. and i think it's going to divide the faculty. >> today, there were two groups. one yes and one no. both lining up around the corner to cast their votes on how teachers will teach and how students will learn. in north baltimore, brian

kugle, abc2 news. >> even though voting was expected to be done by 3:00, teachers are still in line. they will have a tally later tonight and we will have that information for you on abc2 news at 11:00 and online. well the remarkable rescue of 33 miners from a collapsed mine in chile is over. it took just over 22 hours to bring the trapped miners up one by one in a rescue capsule. medical experts say the primary concern for the miners -- it's mental rather than physical health. dianne has the latest. >> reporter: the 33 as they are now known spent last night in hospital beds and the word is, they loved it. the men are obeying doctor's order st, resting, recoverying, and celebrating. they received their first visitor, chilean president. doctors say that overall they are in good health. some are doing so well they

will be allowed to go home. for many miners, it's a time for new beginnings. the second to last man out held his baby daughter for the first time, born while he was under ground. they named her esporanza, which means hope in spanish. and she will now witness the birth of his first child. his wife is due in just a few days. i was scared of not getting to know my son. he also told abc news how he clung to life in those first two weeks. there was no food, half of the plastic bottle caps were all he ate. my insides were eating themselves away. i lost 25-pounds. he said that humor and religion kept him alive. as the world reveled in the story of these heros, many are asking why the san jose mine, a mine with a long history of

bob ehrlich says he wants to fix maryland. but he increased state spending by record amounts. ehrlich raised $3 billion in taxes and fees... including property taxes... and a 40% increase in college tuition. and now he's made over $1 billion in new promises... with no plans to pay for them... except for cutting education. cuts that will lay off teachers and increase class sizes. that's not a budget. and bob ehrlich's not the kind of leader... we can trust.

in tonight's health alert, there's news about battling addiction to prescription drugs. the food and drug administration is considering a treatment to the problem. here's is timmothy johnson. >> opioids are the prescription drugs taken to relieve pain. such as vice tin and oxycontin. unfortunately, many abuse them. people have taken prescription drugs for nonmedical purposes. and most of them were painkillers. for those who become addicted, treatment is difficult. in the past, the therapy meant using others, like methadone to wean addicts off the painkillers. now the fda is considering a new approach with just one injection a month, a drug called naltrexone stops drugs

from activating the part of the brain that produces drug euphoria. prolonged exposure makes that same part of the brain hypersensitive, which means once an addict stops, he or she may be at increased risk of drug abuse since a small dose of them will produce a big drug high. with this medical minute, i'm dr. timmothy johnson. cvs will have to pay fines. the company will give $2.6 million in profits earned from the sales of pseudoephedrine, which can be often found in cold medicines and is used to make meth. authorities say cvs didn't provide enough safeguards to monitor how much pseudoephedrine people were buying. maryland reports its first flu case of the season. so health officials are urging

everyone to get vaccinated. health officials say the first case has been determined to be this swine or flu strained involved in last year's epidemic. that person, an adult was hospitalized, but is recovering. this year's vaccine protects against last year's swine flu strain, as well as two others prevalent this flu season. tonight the better business bureau is warning consumers about fishing scams. businesses and individuals have been receiving e-mails claiming to be from the u.s. treasury. with the headline, your tax payment id010377149 has been rejected. well the bureau says the id number being used is not valid. if you receive an e-mail claiming from someone being the irs or pushing you to an irs site, do not reply or click on any links. the irs's federal tax payment system is actually a free

in fact, clear skies now across parts of virginia and into west virginia. as this entire storm system ejects off to the north and east and it's a double barreled area of low pressure. as this whole thing rolls off to the east, what will happen is, a big difference in pressure between that storm system offshore. high pressure settling in out of the west. sunshine this weekend. between the two, we'll have a mostly cloudy day tomorrow with some sun, maybe an isolated shower or two, and most of all, a lot of wind between these two systems. the second system arrives saturday. a lot of sunshine with that one and looking good for us for the big running festival and any of your weekend plans look dry right now. but overnight tonight, not so dry. rain ending from west to east. we'll still see showers to the east and tomorrow, 65. variable cloudy. some sun, an isolated shower. you will notice the wind. wind gusting 20 to 30 and gusts to 40 probably. that is windy. tomorrow night, 45. partly cloudy and a little chilly. and your seven-day forecast again as we go forward in time
