right now. now abc2 news at 6:00. >> i'm kelly swoope. we had it coming. last weekend was picture perfect and the workweek was off to a great start. the real october is back in baltimore. from the early morning heavy rains pounding the region. even making a morning -- messy morning commute. >> kelly, i like that term. the real october in fact. that's good stuff. we are looking at kelly, rain clearing out, but not before that storm put down some high rain fall totals. take a look at some of these. these are our weather net sites. temperature wise, or rain fall wise, more than an inch from columbia to rockville back over through the eastern shore. more than 3/4 of an inch in centerville and just about an

inch even in annapolis. these are impressive totals. rain beginning to clear from west to east on maryland's most powerful radar. there's another band of isolated showers toward frederick. so we may see a little more rain around baltimore, but most of it cleared out. temperatures very cool. mid 50s and getting cooler through the overnight. tomorrow, with system sunshine coming back, it's going to be a slow crawl. so a very breezy, in fact, windy, blustery day on tap for your friday along with another day where we'll spend most of the hours in the 50s. we'll have much more for you on your weekend forecast up ahead. kelly. tonight in democracy 2010, the temperature was cool outside, but there was no need to trim up the thermostat inside the washington post building. governor martin o'malley and robert ehrlich provided plenty of exchanges. with 19 days to go until voters

new slots parlor will be more than just about gambling. unveiled plans for a multifaceted entertainment complex that he says will feature a lot of great things. one of the things on the top suggestion is having live entertainment. also plan to have lots of fancy high class restaurants for you to dine at and yes, of course slots, which seems to be the major big controversial issue that has it on the ballot. let's check in with rosie who is back with more on that story. >> kelly, call it maryland live. it will be a huge complex of restaurants and entertainment. a destination for more than just gambling. if voters don't stop him. ♪ [ music ] >> it will be about more than just gambling. developer david cortis says maryland live will be several rest ranteds, a concert hall, and gaming machines. >> people coming in, this is

going to be a world class entertainment regional destination. this is not a slot box. this is something that the people will visit, come to the airport. you'll come over. you'll come from all over maryland. >> cortis says it will be a topnotch facility anchored by topnotch tenants. already on board, a cheesecake factory, steak house, and a concept restaurant from food network star, bobby flay. also be a new head live, even though voters will still have to decide on the zoning for the maryland live complex, the future tenants say they are fully behind this project. >> we think it's a great thing for the region. we think it's a great thing for the state of maryland. let's face it, this place is going to put a lot more money into the state than they ever has. >> cortis is getting that type of support as he goes door to door to talk to people about

the proposal. after he clears up about the untruths put out by opponents, he says people realize this is the best bet for the state. >> the controversy is not a real controversy. the controversy is because national doesn't want anything built in anne arundel county. it's that simple. so you have an out of state business interest that for their own selfish reasons wants to keep the people driving to charlestown, west virginia. that's the controversy. so we'll see whether west virginia wins or anne arundel county and maryland win. >> once again, folks against the proposal at the mall say it would cause traffic headaches and increase crime in the area. but that's just not the case. voters will decide on election day. roosevelt leftwich, abc2 news. let's get you updated on the breaking news we first brought you at 5:00 tonight. firefighters on the scene of a house fire in owings mills. the fire started just before 4:30 this afternoon in the 200

block of tolgate road. fire crews say the fire is out now at the two story home. now the investigation on how it started begins. no injuries have been reported. well, at this hour, baltimore city teachers continue to vote on one of the most progressive contracts in the nation. the teachers union new contracted is performance based and although the vote was set for noon by 11:30 this morning, a line stretching around the corner had already formed. it is designed with built in raises and tiers. no longer based on experience and education levels. however, the vote is dividing some educators, some voting yes and others no to the contract. >> it's easier to advance quicker with this new contract and i think that if you are going the extra mile, you should be rewarded for what you are doing. >> you should help young teachers. >> i think baltimore is a wonderful school district to work for and i think this is

not a good thing. and i think it's going to divide the faculty. >> this new contract is getting national attention as it changes incentives for educators. maryland state police are investigating an apparent murder suicide in carol county. tonight the investigation starts in the 1500 block of pillgram lane. it doesn't end there. they say 48-year-old steven was shot and killed by 51-year-old gregory martin who was also faulk's former neighbor. last night, investigators say when faulk came home early, martin shot him several times then ran to the backyard of his former home where his estranged wife still lives and killed himself. state police say this isn't the first time they have heard of the two men. >> state police responded there in 2007 for a dispute over mowing grass and then again in 2008. neither case resulted in any criminal prosecution of either

of these individuals, but we know that there had been a long standing dispute between the two. >> investigation is on going. at this hour, baltimore city mayor stephanie rollings blake is holding a town hall meeting at the school for the arts. audience engagement in 2010 with the focus of people 18 to 32 years old. the ceo of the library and the media specialist from visit baltimore. in addition to a panel of young people providing some ideas on how to interest and attract. the meeting continues until 8:00 tonight. well when it comes to peeking kids interest in science, nasa is giving it all they can. several schools in baltimore county have been selected to participate in a three-year partnership with deep creek middle, landsdown middle.

southwest academy and middle schools will all help nasa increase science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. today more than 200 students and chaperons traveled to the center to spend the day touring the campus. you got a chance to meet an astronaut. well, one group is on a mission to educate everyone on the importance of alternative fuel. coming up, they are turning their message over to the future leaders. what they are learning about their environment and how to protect it. and if your teen is having problems adjusting to the new school sleep schedule, one school district plans to do something about it. >> 12 degrees below average today. 56 degrees was it and almost an inch of rain there. 60 degrees was your 2-degree guarantee. good news. rain clearing. we'll talk about your weekend forecast right after this.

bob ehrlich says he wants to fix maryland. but he increased state spending by record amounts. ehrlich raised $3 billion in taxes and fees... including property taxes... and a 40% increase in college tuition. and now he's made over $1 billion in new promises... with no plans to pay for them... except for cutting education. cuts that will lay off teachers and increase class sizes. that's not a budget. and bob ehrlich's not the kind of leader... we can trust.

it has been the talk for several years now. how we can make cars in america more fuel efficient. cars of the future were on display and people got a firsthand look at some alternative fuel vehicles. abc2 news has more. so as i'm generating electricity, i'm putting in the battery packs. >> some local high school and community college students put together a workshop dealing with advanced technology vehicles. >> the kids are from local schools and they have come in here as a career day and also to learn about alternative fuels. >> today we are learning about new hybrid cars and all the new technology that they have and how they are helping their

to germantown. an inch. half an inch from chestertown. annapolis with just over an inch of rain as well. wet conditions and breezy, but the winds not nearly as strong as they'll be this time tomorrow. we expeblght these winds to pick up 20, 30, even gusts to 40 by tomorrow afternoon. current winds across the averaging 5 to 15. especially into the day tomorrow, it's going to be one of those days where you need the windbreaker. maryland's most powerful radar pushing out most of the rain right now. still some rain from cessel county. most of this now in delaware and new jersey and on up into philly. maybe an isolated shower or two left this evening. for the most part, we're dry. highs today struggling only to about 60 or so at the inner harbor and annapolis, we never got that warm out at the airport. how does that stack up tomorrow? down through federal hill, we are talking about mid 60s. a little bit of sunshine at

times, but i'm telling you, these temperatures, even close to 60 tomorrow, it will not feel that warm because of the powerful gusty winds. it will be a windchill today. there will be sun, but mid 60s over on the eastern shore, feeling like mid and upper 50s courtesy of the winds of mother nature. satellite radar is clearing from the west. a couple isolated showers. a couple could make it into the baltimore area. not looking for much. as this low slides into the north and east over the atlantic. winds are going to flow in behind these things. it will be gusty through the day tomorrow. we'll dry it out. partly to mostly cloudy die. maybe a stray shower, but windy friday and then breezy saturday for the big rundown downtown on saturday. but not quite as gusty. 44 tonight. rain ends. 2-degree guarantee tomorrow. 65. we'll feel much cooler with winds 20 to 40. tomorrow night, still breezy and chilly. in the mid 40s and a quick check of that weekend.
