testimony. it hit at 1:30 and how many witness does you have? people woke up when it hit and afterwards. but to see what happened, it's the damage assessments. they went out to see how the trees were bent and knocked down, the debris field, was it all in one direction indicating straight line wind. was it twisted. >> what's your gut tell you in. >> i haven't been there firsthand. seeing that, 80-mile-per-hour winds is pretty legitimate. you know, seeing large planks impaled in the building and cars piled up, that's legitimate to push 80-mile-per-hour wind. but at this point, it's academic. the wind were not the cause of damage. we saw that. was it a tornado? a tornado would be from twisting from the cloud above knocked down to the ground. but a gustnado which many of you haven't heard of is straight-line wind pushed down to the ground but because of the terrain, it gets a spin on the ground. sort of like leaves rusteling up in the fall on the side of a

directions. no problems around the beltway. i70 is checking in without issues approaching 695. looking at the maps, we have a couple incidents to let you know about downtown a crash right there at bank and eaton streets. not bound 895 approaching the 95 split, a disabled tractor trailer is crowding the right lane. traffic is able to get by because it's pretty early in the morning. and in dundalk, lingering crash activity at dundalk and dunn haven road. ran into diane yesterday who lives on kentucky avenue off taylor. she said she heard a freight train coming but kentucky avenue is nowhere close to train tracks. sherrie johnson is there live as many spent the night elsewhere because of the storm that shook us nuts. sherrie. >> reporter: good morning. that's right. we actually heard a lot of reference to freight trains -- references in today freight trains in relation to the storm. many of the people affected are

here at the friend sheep academy of engineering and technology. they spent the night here. many are from dutch village apartments and town homes and their homes were imaginely affected by the heavy, heavy wind yesterday. now 170 people stayed here or eventually found their way to the mount pleasant ice arena. many handle the difficult situation very well keeping everything in perspective. and while they waited, they talked a little bit about what they saw and what they heard and what woke them up. >> god wanted this to happen and it happened for a reason. >> he he protected us also. >> but the reason is we don't know. >> reporter: we are told the storm victims can return to the mount pleasant ice skating arena to find out more information on housing, the american red cross will be there as well as baltimore city agencies to help folks that need a little help. reporting live from northeast baltimore, sherrie johnson, abc2 now is. the high wind from wednesday's storms stretched up the east coast.

look at this. high winds triggered a firey gas main break in new jersey. high winds knocked down power lines on a tree and the tree fell broke the pipe and the power lines parked the -- sparked the gas and caused the fire. about 30 homes lost gas service. and the storms didn't cause injuries in baltimore. we are lucky for that. but outside roanoke virginia two people went to the hospital with serious injuries. the storm there created a tree -- caused a tree to fall on the car. firefighters had to use the chain saws to free the elderly couple. they are expected to be fine. the storms did major damage to the mall in philadelphia. wind up to 45 miles per hour knocked out walls and windows and ripped the roof off one of the buildings at the mall. trees are down and at least 17,000 people are without power. nobody was hurt. megan. 35:36. the american -- 5:36. the american red cross has been helping storm victims since yesterday morning and they are letting you know how to help if

academy eng -- friendship academy engineering and technology school. we are talking about folks from dutch village apartment and you to hones where strong winds caused severe damage to their homes. about 170 people took advantage of the shelter overnight. it appears they handled it well and handled it about as well as can be expected. while they waited they talked about what they saw and heard when the storm woke them up. >> the house started to shake. and i tipped it over and fell running into my mother's room. >> everything wint went pitch back like what's that movie with dorothy. >> wizard of oz. >> like the wizard of oz. >> reporter: now, later today, many of the people will be able to return to their homes but that's not for everyone. some people will not be able to return home. they can head back to the mount

power. 5:48. president barack obama says general motors stock offering today will mark a major milestone. not only in the turn around of the company but also of the u.s. auto industry as a whole. obama says the decision to help gm save jobs and reduce the -- rescued the auto industry. gm set a price of $33 for common share. house democrats reelected baltimore native nancy pelosi as the leader for the next congress. so the closed-door vote will let pelosi shift from house speaker to minority leader. that will be coming up in january. we pub cans awarded the man who led them to victory unanimously pick john boehner as the next speaker of the house. and some democrats are upset republicans are trying to play games after top gop members canceled a meeting set for today with the president. congressman boehner and mitch

mcconnell said there was scheduling conflict and the change irritated congressman cummings. >> the president extended the invitation to mr. mcconnell and others and for some reason, there's been all kinds of comments with regards to who did did the postponing but clearly, it appears the republicans were not prepared to go forward with that meeting. >> so wheat house says the talks have been moved to a week after thanks giving. now, maryland's most powerful doppler radar and the forecast certified most accurate by weather rate. >> all right. height nd awareness from the big storms that blew through yesterday morning and the gusty wind during the afternoon. we want to show outwind forecast here as we still have the northwesterly push of air. they will have to usher in clouds today. but also ease up a little bit going towards the afternoon.

there's lighter winds will be replaced by a stronger surge of colder air as the arrows extend and come from northwest to southeast. that is the surge of colder air all of us will feel by friday morning. should ease up friday afternoon and on into saturday morning. we shift the wind to the southwest. and that will start bringing in slightly warmer temperatures over the weekend into next week. on the 18th of november, 34 in the morning and high of 55 in the afternoon. the splits on the records from 20 in 1959 to 1938 bringing us the mark of 78 degrees. sun up at 6:53 and goes down at 4:50 with a shroud of cloud from the next storm producing clouds back in towards the mountains. but the satellite is filling in during the early morning scene up to the north. watching the cold airstream across the great lakes and watching a couple streamers off lake ontario. even layer e-rie but not lot of upper level support. the support is from the next system behind the store. that's been the pattern because two weeks ago we had the record low pressure in minnesota followed by a southern system

behind it that gave us rain. this one maybe passing further to the south. but during the early morning hours, and just around you south of the indianapolis, showing purple on the screen. a possibility there could be mixed precipitation in indiana and over towards ohio in the northern fringe catching up with the colder air. as the track travels to the south, there will be showers but we will be on the northern fringe in central maryland. so really it's a give and take as to whether we get the stuff this afternoon. better chance of wet weather to the south and to the north it gets more interesting because of the cold air. 56 we will go for that as the two degree guaranteed high. we will cloud up this morning on mostly cloudy to overcast afternoon and winds will be picking up to 25 miles per hour. now, there could be late afternoon to evening showers, and because of the cold air catching in and because of cold air up aloft there could be snowflakes mixed in but nothing will stick and it will clear out by daybreak by 32. 50 tomorrow and a peek leading into the weekend. high temperatures should climb into the mid-50s saturday and sunday and 60s by tuesday and

wednesday with rain. >> reporter: well, if we look around the beltway, traffic is beginning to build but fortunately, moving very well as we look on the west side at liberty road. no problems or delays on the outer loop make your way past i-70 interchange and towards 95. inner loop lanes are looking good up towards the 83. as we look at the maps, a little bit of an adjustment. parkton, bunker hill road at york road not a crash but trees and wires down. right there underneath the 83 overpass, bg and e crews are on the scene. it's not blobbing any lanes. we are continuing into clean up the crash in dundalk at dundalk avenue and dunn haven road and that's a vehicle fire downtown at bank and eaton street. police are on the scene there. stay with us, because we have more of your news, weather and traffic when "good morning, maryland" returns after this break.
