airport security measures threatening a slowdown on wednesday. and now the government is responding to those complaints. emily schmidt is joining us from washington. good morning to you. passengers have not been shy saying they want more security in their government screenings. the tsa is issuing a statement now promising to make sure at that security screenings are what they call as minimal a invase as possible. >> reporter: new airport security scans and patdowns have turned up one thing so far, a lot of frustrated passenger. >> i think the tsa is out of control. >> reporter: these patdowns are considered by many to be too close for comfort. to up to interpretation. one breast cancer survivor, a flight attendant, tells this story. >> she put her full hand on my breast, and said what is this. i said it's a prosthesis because i've had breast cancer. and she goes you'll need to show me that. >> reporter: even secretary of

state hillary clinton. >> would you submit to one of these patdowns. >> not if i could avoid it. who would? >> reporter: the tsa worked to convince passengers are necessary. >> you have the option to request that the patdown be conducted in a private room. you have the option to have that patdown witnessed by a person your choice. >> reporter: late sunday, the tsa added airport security screening procedures will be adapted as warranted. >> i'm still afraid of flying. it hasn't changed any. i feel greater security. >> with the scanners? >> with the scanners. >> reporter: only about 2 in 10 passengers will face the full scan. that hasn't spared the process from comedy shows. >> it's our business to touch yours. >> reporter: there's an internet movement urging passengers to opt out of body scans to slow security. some experts aren't sure the idea will catch on. >> truth is most travelers just

want to get to their destination as fast as possible. and one business group said the movement to opt for the full patdowns instead of screenings is less dangerous. it has a chance to bunch them out, make them more vulnerable. vinita and mike. >> emily schmidt in washington. a possible bird strike. a moscow-bound plane was 400 feet in the air when one of the engines quit. the boeing was forced to land before dumping fuel to land safely. a u.s. special envoy has rushed to south korea for meetings after the discovery of i new uranium enrichment facility in north korea. steven bosworth said north korea's debut of the new facility is disappointing but not surprising. and a top south korean official says the discovery may lead them to change their minds and allow

american num weapons back in the country. here's john hendren. >> reporter: behind the military pomp, north korea is advertising a stunning nuclear development. >> this comes out like a bomb shem. >> reporter: robert carlin and two other stanford university experts were recently invited to the north korea facility. what they saw them rocked them on their heels. >> we walked through and we were suddenly stunned to see row after low after row of centrifuges. >> reporter: nuclear centrifuges designed to enrich uranium. in an exclusive interview with abc news, carlin said the facility is vast and nor advanced than he or any other nuclear expert expected. >> and this was way beyond anything anybody had imagined. >> reporter: the north koreans say it's designed only for nuclear power. but experts say it could quickly be converted. or worse, north korea might be

hiding another site that's already doing that. is this alarming? >> it alarmed me. and the reason it alarmed me is that it was such a surprise. and it showed me that the policy that we've been following seems to be at a dead-end. >> reporter: that policy, sanctions, which clearly did not bar north korea from obtaining the technology it needed. kim jong-il might be attempting to bargain with the nations. the new revelations show just how infective international sanctions have been. since that, north korea has been hit a round of sanctions. john hendren, abc news, washington. a happy ending for 29 miners trapped in a chinese coal mine. rescuers lifted all of them to safety this morning after they spent more than 24 hours underground. ambulance waited to take them to the hospital.

last year, 2600 people died in mines. new zealand acknowledged it may be too late to save the 29 miners trapped there. the crews are preparing a bomb dispos disposal rebot to go in. al qaeda terrorists in yemen say they want to, quote, bleed the u.s. economy. they claim to have spent just $4,200 on two parcel bombs mailed from yemen to the u.s. last month. the bombs were sent to britain. the yiendz is announcing the launch of a new satellite. a government news release described it as the largest satellite in the world.

overseas stocks are mostly higher this morning after ireland finally agreed to accept a bailout. a lone for the debt-crippled company that could be as much at $140 billion. the aid will help stabilize the banks easing fears that the debt crisis will worsen. in asia this morning, tokyo's nikkei average rose 0.9%. hong kong's hang seng is lower. in london the ftse opened high are. in wall street, the nasdaq added 11 points.
