west pratt street. they have not identified the pharmacy where the deliver was supposed to happen. a driver was approached by three suspects. one of the suspects showed a driver a gun and kidnapped him and took the truck full of drugs to a spot on ford avenue. that's where they unloaded tons of narcotics in their on u haul and bailed, leaving the driver unhurt. >> this is not a random attack but the robbers did have some prior knowledge of the packing list that was enclosed in the truck. the robbery was well thought out but so is our response. >> reporter: city police are working with the fbi and the dea. cops don't have an exact list of what was part of the delivery but they believe the value is significant. they are hoping to catch the

thieves. so far they have not released any description of the suspects. tonight we're learning more about the two men that died from carbon monoxide poisoning this weekend. according to the men's family and friends they were working here to send money home to their families. >> the fire department says it doesn't know the source of the carbon monoxide leak. there's an effort to help the victim's families. >> reporter: both men faces now on a donation box friends say is meant to raise money for their families. >> after this we don't have any help to try to send them back.

bad. he may face possible fines as the county continues to investigate how this happened and why. >> the county inspectors will look at whether or not this property had been rented illegally and take the appropriate action. >> reporter: three first responders were transported to the hospital as well. they are all out of hospital tonight and doing well. we started off somewhat mild in the low 40s. now we're well down into the 20s. here is the wetter bug. we're at 44 in ryster town. our wind chill factor feeling

like 11. the temps in the mid 20s statewide except for western maryland where it's down in the single digits. we're getting wrap around snow flurries across the state. man, it's going to stay cold out there. 20s, but feeling more like single digits. we'll talk about this harsh blast of frigid air and when it lets up some. speaking of the weather, that wintry weather making a mess out of things in central ohio. parts of the state under a winter storm warning. crews are working to clear the runways and trying to keep the flights moving. strong winds and continuing snowfall will make for another mess tomorrow. a snowy, messy commute in nashville. police were responding to call for a crash. it happened in the same area where hundreds of drivers were backed up on the interstate for

upwards of ten hours yesterday. the winter storm pounding the chicago area forced the cancellation of almost 1700 flights. temperatures expected to drop tonight in the area. we'll take another look at the wicked weather in other parts of the state coming up in about ten minutes. for the latest now in this case against a baltimore man accused of trying to blow up a military recruitment center. no bail for martinez. his lawyers say the actual plot was the government and not his. >> reporter: on video tapes prosecutors say antonio martinez thought of himself as a samurai. his masters was god and the

cause would be helping against those who fought against islam. video made on the day of the bombing attempt showed he didn't show remorse or nervousness as he assembled what he thought was a bomb. his defense attorney said the government orb straited a plot. >> i know him. i'm the only person that knows him.

>> i was putting forward our best argument as to why he should not be detained until pretrail. we felt strongly he should not be retained. >> reporter: a federal judge denied bond for martinez. he's expected to be indicted next week. a retrial hearing is set in the case for next tuesday. tonight reports that the former virginia man's lacrosse player charged with killing his ex-girlfriend could get a plea deal. he is accused of killing yardley love in her off campus apartment last may. he admitted he fought with her shaking her as her head repeatedly slammed against the

wall. the trial of a baltimore city firefighter accused of crashing into another vehicle while driving under the influence of alcohol begins today. the accident left a woman and her 10-year-old son seriously injured. the injuries were so severe they were hospitalized for several weeks. johnson could face up to 60 years if convicted. a developing story involving health care tonight. federal judge in virginia struck down a key provision of obama's administration health care legislation saying the provision exceeds the constitutional boundary of power. he is well within authority to pass the bill since the cost of the uninsured translate to interstate economic activity. >> reporter: a federal judge's decision in virginia could put

the president's signature program on life support. >> this case is not about health insurance. it's not about health care. it's about liberty. the judge said as much in his order. >> reporter: judge henry hudson ruled the federal government mandate forcing individuals to buy health insurance unconstitutional. >> if we cross this line with health care now, this unconstitutional line where the government can force us to buy a private product and say it's for our own good, then we're giving the government to force us the power to buy other products, cars, gym memberships. >> reporter: the white house response, virginia's decision is a minority view with judges having dismissed 13 earlier lawsuits against the law. >> we're confident it is constitutional. of the three courts that have rendered decisions on this question, two have ruled in our favor. >> reporter: this case and

another in florida are high profile. the plaintiff's are the state's themselves. >> part of our health care needs to be fixed. yeah, expenses are out of the control and everyone's needs are not being met right now but there are better solutions than giving up our freedom. >> reporter: the senior obama administration official tells abc news the department of justice will most likely appeal the case. a case that may well end up in the supreme court. michael steel is the chairman of the national republican party but will he keep that job? he's expected to let us know tonight if he's interested. there's criticism about his leadership and he's lost a lot of backing.

temperatures are expected to drop to 15 degrees today. >> reporter: the massive storm covering some 1500 miles have been on the move since friday and now the monster blizzard is heading east. >> i think maybe once ever seen this in ten years that i've ever seen it this bad. >> reporter: monday morning hundreds of drivers were stranded on indiana highways facing sub zero temperatures. shaun cunningham and his family were stuck for 12 hours. they're worried about running out of gas. >> we have been hunkered down in the car at this point. there's a few hundred cars stranded on the road. >> reporter: low visibility and white out conditions closed interstate highways in five other midwest states. in st. louis this semi skidsed right off the highway. >> it's crazy out here. >> reporter: traveling by air has been difficult too.

the storm shut down o'hare airport. >> my flight from chicago to cleveland has gotten cancelled. it's leaving for tuesday afternoon. i'm stuck here until then. >> reporter: in minnesota where they are used to harsh winter there was one for the record books. almost two feet of snow fell. the weight of that snow was too much for the roof of the metro dome. next stop for the storm system, michigan, indiana, pennsylvania and new york. there's going to be two monday night games tonight. the most important to us will be in houston. ravens in houston will have it much better than the others. now to a unique basketball

game. it's called the silence name game and it's held each year at taylor university. students, teachers and faculty pack the school gym. they dress up in that pajamas to cheer on the team but they don't cheer. they're silent. no cheering my anyone except those on the team benches until the home team scores their tenth point of the game. frit night's game served as a chance for those in attendance to give back to a local charity. good thing that game was inside. >> yeah. i think everyone wanted to go to

the lower eastern shore here. also a passing snow flurry there in howard county as well. not a lot of snow but out here in the western part of the state you will find a few flakes still flying. let's take a look at our high definition weather bug camera. man, i tell you. we saw a bit of sun at times and it was not that cold early. it was windy but not that coal. you walk out in the afternoon and you're like man, what a shocking change. this is one spot where we had a few flakes fly at time. the bottom line is cold and blustery day statewide. look at some of these wind gusts up around 34, 39. what does that mean? the bottom line is there will be steady lines. it's feeling like 6 right now.

winds all across the state. 27 about the coldest we have been all day. the wind chill is much colder. look north and west of us. not that we ever wish a lot of great things for pittsburgh but one below zero is cold stuff. snow shower action across the region. some of it will pass through maryland. could see a brief coating on the ground, enough to make it briefly slick. cold northerly winds keep blowing in. this is a giant canadian arctic air mass. the storm that put the snow and caused the problems up north is just about offshore.

more sunshine by wednesday. the sun will feel good. 19 with snow showers tonight. tomorrow we'll go 29. how is that. a few flurries. very windy tomorrow. tomorrow night still breezy down to 17. single digit wind chills. the trend is for more cold, blustery cold weather right through thursday. now to the economy. the nation's high unemployment rate has many saying all i want for christmas this year is a job. it's not really the best time of year to be looking for work. we have some tips on how to find a job over the holidays. >> people might think that december is not a great time to look for a job. the reality is if you're looking

for job all you need is one. >> january may be a little more likely when employers are confident enough to start hiring. >> all sectors have openings. >> reporter: the number is now 4.4 job seekers for every available opening. it sounds daunting but it's the best it's been in two years. >> don't bring a family member too an interview. >> if you can get someone invited to an office party as a plus one, fabulous. have a pot luck. it didn't have to be expensive but you've got to be out there connecting to people. >> reporter: americans will spend 15 hours at holiday

gatherings this year. >> tact, honesty, you show a little bit of restraints. at the same time you're honest about your situation and it's amazing how people will open up and listen and offer help you. >> reporter: there are plenty of opportunitys to network for a job this season. just do its taxfully or don't do it at all. how different painkillers can be doing your body more harm and probably may even kill you. plus, she's unemployed and she spent the last year dancing in the same place. why she's doing it and who is joining her.

you take prescription painkillers you need the pay close attention to this story. some of them have serious risks. timothy johnson explains. >> reporter: a study published in the archives of internal medicine looks at medicare data from 31,000 older americans who took five painkillers from the class known as opiods. researchers found those taking codeine or oxycodone were at greater risk of death after 30 days compared to patients taking

hydrocodone. patients who took codeine at least three months had a 62% greater risk for cardiovascular problems compared to those taking hydrocodone. these starting disparities in safety point out the need for greater caution in prescribing these medications. one expert says this ground breaking study underscores how the treatment of pain is a delicate balancing act between risks and benefits. with this medical minute i'm dr. timothy johnson. also on tonight's health alert president obama signed the nutrition bill into law. federal reimbursements for school lunches will increase by six cents per meal. first lady michelle obama has been a huge supporter of the bill as part of her initiative
