and democracy. thanks to the military professionals who carried out the mission. we owe them our gratitude and prayers. many of you are waking up this morning hearing the news for the first time. the death oaf sama bin laden. abc -- osama bin laden. linda so is talking to people heading into the nation's capital to start the workweek. linda. >> reporter: yeah, actually, i wanted to show you something interesting. we had the sun the headline reads, dead a picture of osama bin laden. but this happened -- the announcement came late last night around 11. so a lot of papers actually had to scramble. this is the early edition of the "new york times." you can see the big story is still the tornadoes that hit last week in alabama. we are hearing that a lot of newspapers you got to think all around the world scrambled last- minute to get their headlines changeed. but it shows you know how huge this is. the sun det and picture of osama bin laden killed during a

fire fight in pakistan. and the same goes this morning for the folks we spoke with. actually, i spoke with several people who had no idea three the were heading into work at penn station -- they were heading into work here at penn station they had no idea osama bin laden was killed and many were shocked and surprised. one wood said good he was the devil. but she also said she was -- one woman said good, he was the devil and she also said she was surprised and it took 10 years since the 9/11 attacks for the day to come and now that it has, she really was very surprised. we are talking to some folks here heading off to dc to work. we have a lot of dc commuters. they remember the day when 9/11 happened. what they were doing and where they were. and we spoke with one gentleman who works in dc and he was getting ready for a business trip to new york. obviously that got canceled. but he says he is just glad

that this happened before the ten-year anniversary of 9/11 and we spoke with one woman 3,000 people were killed during the 9/11 attack. she is glad that osama bin laden has been captured and she believes that it will bring some sort of relief for the families who lost their loved ones. let's look -- listen at what she had to say. >> you can never say a life ending you can never say it's justice. but, yeah, i am speechless. >> reporter: so, again, the front page of the sun says it all. dead. just an interesting thing with the announcement happening the early edition of the "new york times" hass the picture of the alabama tornadoes. but you know a. lot of papers across the country and -- papers across the country and -- papers across the country and world scrambling to get the

6:37. thanks for joining us. the fire this morning is burning at pakistani mansion where osama bin laden was killed by u.s. forces. right now it's not known what caused the fire. a source tells cnn that bin laden was shot in the head during a short fire fight at that compound. three other men were also killed in a raid along with a woman who has been used as a human shield we are told. no americans were hurt but a u.s. helicopter had a mechanical problem and crashed during the raid. only a small group of people inside the u.s. government knew about the operation ahead of

time. now in other news, baltimore county police say a man in randallstown shot a woman and turned the gun on himself. it happened sunday afternoon in randallstown. baltimore county place plies say the woman was shot in the leg by her husband. she is in the hospital this morning. the situation grew more intense when police knocked on the door but got no response. police forced their way in and found her in the foyer. police have not named the husband and wife. the body of a man is discovered inside a vacant home along with a 5-year-old boy and police are trying to determinehow long he has been with his father's body. this discovery was made along the 8700 block of mary lane in jessup. the man is 26-year-old who is last seen on tuesday leaving a relative's home after a domestic dispute. officers were called to the home on wednesday for a broken window. they searched but didn't find anything. the body and the child were

found when homeowners stopped by on saturday. news time is 6:38. violence is the baltimore county carnival. three men were stabbed after fight broke out near the security square carnival. the fight escalated leading to the stabbings a few miles away at the 3600 block of florida road. this morning, police are still searching for suspects. this morning, police are trying to determine what caused an explosion that killed a man in taneytown. no one seen or heard from carey landskroner. police are saying the 44-year- old man died because of an explosion but aren't sure what caused the explosion. they are still investigating this morning. #:39. -- 6:39. could you get caught on camera. the howard county council is expected to vote whether or not to allow speed cameras in school zones. drivers would wind up with a 40 dollar ticket for going faster than 12 miles per hour over the speed limb. we will keep you posted on what happens. he he was the man that many said they wanted him dead or

now northbound riverside parkway closed at pulaski highway because of an earlier accident. a pretty serious crash. and police are on the scene directing traffic. you can use route 24 as a alternate. reisterstown an accident remains at worthington road and timber knoll road. now back to you. >> thanks a lot. news time is 6:45. after nearly a decade of hiding, osama bin laden is dead. president obama made the announcement last might in a press conference. you see the pakistani security outside the mansion where the al-qaeda leader was killed. u.s. officials say the compound was much larger than nearby homes as much as 8 times larger. and it appeared to be a custom built home to hide someone. a small group of people inside. u.s. government knew about the operation well ahead of time. in the address to the nation last night, president obama reiterated that we are not at war with islam. >> bin laden was not a muslim leader. he was a mass murderer of muslims and al-qaeda

slaughtered scores of muslims in many countries including our own. so his dough mice should be welcomed by all who believe in peace and human dignity. >> news sources including the associated press cnn and apc news report the body has been buried at sea. >> 6:46 right now. this is certainly a story that we have waited a long time to hear. and if you went to bed early, maybe this is the first thing you are hearing about, the death of osama bin laden. linda so is live this morning at penn station where people are headed to dc. linda. >> reporter: yeah, megan that's the case for a lot of folks. they are up so early and they went to bed early last night and missed ate nounsment. many were hearing for the first time that osama bin laden is dead. a collective sigh of relief for many of them. surprise from a lot of folks. they didn't know this day would happen so soon. we are waiting for a train that's leaving for new york at 7:15 this morning. and another one is coming in

from new york at 7:30. we will be standing by here talking to folks as that happens and have that for you later in the 9 a.m. newscast. you know, the people here many who are decent commuters who use penn station they were working in dc when 9/11 happened. they say they will never forget that day. where they were or what they were doing. and today is no different. they expect when they head into work, they will their will be a lot of chatter and people talking about what happened and the news of the day. we spoke with one gentleman as you know, this is a great victory in the war against terrorism that osama bin laden is dead. but, again, also the fear that it might spark retaliation from al-qaeda cells. let's hear what he had to say. >> you do worry about retaliatory measures, but, other than that, you know, it's a good day. well-known terrorists and no longer around.

antiamerican violence given the recent counter terrorism activity in pakistan. >> usa, usa, usa. >> this video shows you a crowd near the white house. some people gathered shortly before mr. obama's statement and the crowds cepped kept growing and growing throughout the -- kept growing and growing. they waved flags and sang songs when hearing the news of the death of osama bin laden. fbi can be -- he was on the most wanted fbi list prior to september 11th. >> ♪ oh say does that star spaingeled banner yet wave ♪ >> it's a celebration in a spot long known for tragedy. here you can see a crowd gathering at ground zero early monday morning shortly after the president announced bin laden's death. 9/11 attacks, the mastermind by bin laden brought down the twin towers and claimed more than 3,000 lives. 2700 of those lives lost at

world trade center at ground zero. it was a similar scene in boston as cheers range out through the streets. dozens of people gathered and the -- at the boton common shortly after the president's historic ad. boston common shortly after the -- boston common shortly after the president's announcement. president bush thanked the men and women of our military as well as the intelligence communities who devoted lives to the mission e said this momentous achievement marks a victory for america, for people who seek peace around the world and for all of those who lost loved ones on september 11th 2001. he also said that it was a unmistakable message that no matter how long it takes, justice will be done. ten minutes away from cinch. nearly ten years ago we are reeling from the september 11th attacks and we remember where we were and what we were doing when we heard about a plane hitting the world trade center. and then the news kept getting

worse and worse. when the smoke cleared, at least 3,000 lives were lost less than a week after the attacks, we knew who was behind them and what we needed to do. >> osama bin laden is one person. he is representative of networks of people who absolutely have made their cause to defeat the freedoms we take -- that we understand and we will not allow him to do so. >> do you want bin laden dead. >> i want justice. and there's an old poster out west as i recall that said wanted, dead or alive. >> president obama called president bush after they found osama bin laden's body to tell him that the job was done. it is 6:51 right now and we are seeing amazing pictures this morning coming in. this powerful image this morning. you can see u.s. troops serving in afghanistan watching president obama historic speech late last night.
