night? >> that's when i do the condolence letters. >> reporter: of the thousands of troops in afghanistan and pakistan, in his final trip to the region, he says it's the combat mission that should stake top priority. >> i would look for support people we no longer need. we have done a lot of construction. maybe those people are not needed. i would try to maximize my combat capability as long as this process goes on. >> reporter: general david petraeus, the tom commander in afghanistan, will offer a range of opgss for a withdrawal that starts in july and will go on over 18 months. >> i have confidence we'll strike the right balance. it's what the next 2 1/2 to 3 years looks like. >> reporter: the administration is expected to announce the withdrawal plan in early july.
