first, police continue to investigate after a man shoots and kills a pit bull in the middle of a neighborhood on a sunday morning. it happened in the 1,800 block of memorial court in severn. brian kuebler joins us with what happened and why neighbors are so concerned. >> reporter: police say the owner of one pit bull shot the other pit after the two began fighting. according to the report children were walking with their unleashed pit bull when it charged and attacked a leashed one. when the children ran to get their parents detectives say the father came out and shot and killed the leashed dog. now, this all happened on sunday morning in the middle of a neighborhood usually teeming with children playing. the use of the handgun is an overreaction, neighbors say that could have endangered others. >> it's crazy because if it would have been one of my children, neighbors child, it's terrible. >> something needs to be done. something needs to be done. >> reporter: anne arundel county police were back out on the scene today, coming up at

6:00, we'll explain what happened to the other dog and where the police are in their investigation. brian kuebler, abc2 news. information from the friday pit bull attack that left an elderly woman injured. the health department handed out three citations to the dog's owner, no leash, no vaccination, no license. $500 fines in the town. the 78--year-old victim remains in fair condition. the attack happened friday night when athena went outside to get some air. in the 700 block. the owner says she typically keeps the pit bull on a chain. even in her home. but on friday night blue was with her son on the front porch on a leash and ran from the front porch and scared the elderly woman. the animal is in quarantine with animal control. after 10 days they will hold a hearing to decide if the dog

should be euthanized or returned to the owner. more information about pit bulls on our web site. from the centers for disease control. abc2news.com. just click on the story about the greektown attack. we wanted to find out whether pit bulls deserve their bad reputation. we researched and found the most violent breeds. plus, we've also added some tips on what you can do to prevent dog attacks. new at 5:00 -- this man is wanted in connection with a burglary and attempted sexual assault in baltimore county. police say the 23-year-old ronald preston climbed into the window in the home in the 5600 block of endwright wrote march 23rd. according to police the victim woke up as preston tried to sexually assault her. preston spends a lot of time in the area of hartford road. many people open their windows this time of year because it's so hot but police say it's important to lock them.

>> you want to make sure that if you have air conditioning lock your windows, have the air on if possible. if you do choose to leave the windows open at night make sure the windows are where someone can't access your house easily at nighttime, but they have to go through effort and make noise to get into the house. you don't want it in the area where they can if on top and into the house. >> preston is wanted on sex offense an burglary charges. anyone with information about this case is asked to call baltimore county police, 410-307-2020. the trial of the baltimore city police officer accused of killing a marine outside a mount vernon bar last summer continues. this trial for haji does not have a jury. the judge is going to make the final decision. he's accused of killing marine corporal tyrone brown. the defense insists that he

shot in self-defense. however the state maintains the multiple gunshot wounds that brown suffered happened as he was retreating from the officer. tonight annapolis police need your help to find a missing mentally disabled woman. take a good look at this picture. police say anna smith last seen may 31st in annapolis. she was wearing black pants and tan shirt. police say smith needs her medication. anyone who has seen her is asked to call the annapolis police department. 410-268-9000.. and the family of a missing nursing student is pleading for your help tonight. michelle lee vanished while on break from a california hospital. that was back on may 27th. now the family wants the fbi to take a bigger role in this search. >> if the fbi helps to get her back that would be good but the best thing is to have her walk through that door.

i just want her back now. >> lee told co-workers she was going to get something out of her car. police later found her suv locked a few blocks away from the hospital. they are looking at surveillance video for clues. there's a $45,000 reward for information. a fan favorite. unfortunately, they are making headlines for some scary accidents. we have another inflatable accident to tell you about tonight. here's jamie costello with more. >> this is it. there it is. the inflatable. this is in a soccer gathering in long island, new york. more than about 10 people, mostly children, hurt this weekend in this accident on long island. a parent captured this video on camera on saturday. this is one of three inflatable rides at this soccer outing that became airborne when a gust of wind swept it across the field. when they landed they rolled and onlookers rushed in to

state now. 87 at the inner harbor. 90 frederick. 82 annapolis. a little cooler there in georgetown. delaware 79. we're generally clear this evening, mild and pleasant. but we get rid of the mild theme the next few days. we will talk about the heat coming up. now democracy 2011 -- state senator katherine -- representing parts of west baltimore. she says the high taxes, violence and crime are driving people away from the city and she wants to turn things around. she joins several others including incumbent mayor stephanie rawlings-blake who is not formally announcing her candacey yet. rick santorum is ready to run for president. he made the official announcement today in his home state. that kicks off four days of campaigns including stops in iowa and new hampshire.

santorum served as republican member of the senate from 1995 to 2000. actually, that was twoaive seven -- 2007. the housing authority of baltimore is taking heat for not paying judgments by people whose kids were hurt by lead paint. >> reporter: the housing authority owes about $12 million in judgments, mostly to people impacked by lead paint as you said. not all of them. tonight at 11:00 we introduce you to lady fighting her own battle. she lived for six years in a public housing unit in southwest baltimore plagued with toxic mold. she filled out work orders, complained to supervisors but never got action. during that time she was in and out of the hospital. when she finally had enough she sued the city and won. but later her judgment was slashed. based on a maryland law many people probably never heard of.

>> people don't know that. i think it's outlandish they get to be held protected, housing authority is protected when they are dealing with people who may not be aware. >> reporter: at 11:00, how much that legal loophole costs and how much the law impacts you as well and what you need to do to protect yourself. os joes, -- joce sterman, abc2 news. it was a miracle on the hudson and thanks to the practicality of engineering, it's on its way to a new home. the fuselage of the u.s. airways jet that crashed into the hudson river a few years ago took a long trip down i-95 today. the plane brought out hundreds of people from new jersey and here in maryland to watch the plane as it makes its way to its new home in charlotte. folks say they came out because it's not everyday you see a plane or parts of a plane in this case cruising down the highway. >> we saw it on the new jersey side. we didn't know what it was. there were police everywhere. then when we came over she started to look on her i-phone

and saw what it was. we stopped so see it. >> the plane will make its way through the baltimore area following 95 to 695, i-70, then to i-68 to west virginia as it winds its way to charlotte. it's a sight to see. getting students prepared for higher learning. making a difference. a local charter school teamed up with a local college to put young people in the path to college. >> if i can get through it, there's no reason anyone else can't. >> one teen did something amazing at a graduation ceremony, and had classmates and family cheering extra loud. and fire, floods and record heat. extreme weather that is punishing parts of the country.

getting children on the right path to a college education can be a difficult job. one baltimore city charter school teamed up with a local college to put kids on their way to higher learning at an early age. sherrie johnson shows us a partnership between inner harbor east academy and sojourner douglass college. >> a charter school for elementary school and middle school students. housed on the campus of sojuorner college in east baltimore. a partnership between school and college to get students to higher learning at an early age. >> some are doing it for the first time in their family. so it's an important issue in giving them hope for the future. that's why i think it's very unique, the school nurtures on the hope and idea of a future

being bright. >> reporter: 10-year-old autumn jones is in the fifth grade. a bright student and plans to become a scientist. thanks to this education partnership it's a goal that is not out of her reach. >> for going to college. >> reporter: the students here are unique. life has been challenging, with some coming from single-parent homes and poverty. 78% of the students receive reduced or free lunch. some might think college is not in their future but that's where you're wrong. administrators here want to change the culture and make sure she's students have a fighting chance by on taping -- obtaining a college education. >> i think it's awesome. we try to let the students know going to college is not even an option, it's necessary. >> teaching them they can go beyond what they see at home and people that, their family members and things like that. we try to teach them that they can take it to the next level.

>> some difficulty with that story obviously. inner harbor east academy is kindergarten through eighth grade. they have over 300 students and three schools with preschool, elementary school and middle school. a wheelchair-bound michigan teen not only got her high school diploma this weekend but another reward. >> the 18-year-old walked for the first time by herself. angeline was born with spina bifida, a degenerative disorder of the vertebrae but it didn't stop her this time. >> i still do everything everybody else does. if i can get through it, with what i've got, no reason anyone else can't. >> way to go. the brace under the gown and crutches supporting her on she left the wheelchair behind and

more than ever felt just like everyone else. take a look. gorgeous-looking day on the inner harbor. nice shot of the national aquarium from the maryland science center. 85 degrees. humidity 36%. relatively comfortable. as we look at some of the weather through the day, some of our different weathernet cameras, just a few clouds from the north, a beautiful shot here across baltimore and charm city today, really living up to its name. roland park, trees shaking a little here but on the whole a good-looking day. one more stop, summit ridge, mount airy. beautiful blue skies and just a few passing clouds as we time lapse about six hours, compressed into six seconds. maryland's most powerful doppler radar, nothing out there right now. we're all clear. we expect that to continue to hold up. and winds have been light out of the northeast through the

day, a little breezier in southern maryland, a bit of a by a breeze toward calvert cliffs but mostly things looking good. temperatures, 85 in baltimore now. 82 easton. 82 in hagerstown. ocean city about 77. humidity pretty comfortable, 42% at the inner harbor. much drier air locked in over the northern and western counties now. humidity only 28% in frederick and 47% in georgetown. it's hotter though toward frederick where we're around 90 now. i think we'll get to 90 or so, say in mount vernon tomorrow. fells point, maybe a degree or two cooler, if we get enough breeze on the harbor off the docks but for the most part it will be warm tomorrow. just the beginning of a more dramatic surge in the heat that will come for us wednesday and thursday. got outdoor projects? do it tonight. maybe early in the day tomorrow. it will be hot later in the week. things clear now but across the east coast we find things getting a little more active across michigan, upper midwest,

a little system diving south, a little disturbance but it's weakening. i just don't see much weather coming in the next couple of days. high pressure controls, mild air locked in over the northeast but this tropical ridge, this is some very hot air building in now, surging out of texas and mississippi, tennessee and atlantaa, georgia. that will be surging our way as we work through the week. enjoy a relatively mild evening tonight. tomorrow futurecaster shows a few clouds roll in, maybe a stray shower north and west but probably not much chance of rain until we get past wednesday. i'm talking maybe toward thursday and friday afternoon our better chance for storms in the afternoon. overnight 64, mainly clear, quiet, mild tomorrow, your 2-degree guarantee, 9. we'll be optimistic we stay away from 90 at the airport but downtown we'll get to 90. then tomorrow night down to 68 with a few clouds. we'll get more muggy tomorrow night. 7-day forecast, again, the outlook here calling for much more heat wednesday. we could push 100 degrees, century mark thursday. so again, enjoy the milder air

while we have it. new york congressman anthony weiner admits he did it. he took and sent lewd pictures to women. a picture he denied last week. but despite that he says he won't resign. he apologizes for making what he calls some terrible mistakes. a web site last week starting the controversy. there were new pictures today reportly from a second woman who said she received some shirtless shots of the congressman. last week a picture of a man's crotch was sent from weiner's twitter account. at the time he says the account was hacked. he didn't know if it was a picture of him. as one era closes another one opens. she will now enter the world of daytime talk. the 54-year-old signed a multiyear deal with abc to produce the show. it's set to go on the air in september of next year.

new advances in cancer treatment that could affect millions of lives. one is targeting breast cancer. a drug doctors say can prevent the disease without the dangerous side effects. and some call it nature's gold. new mothers cashing in on it. breast milk selling for hundreds, even thousands of dollars on the internet. but it's not without risk.

in tonight's "health alert" a weekend conference of top cancer doctors produces news of two advances in cancer treatment. the first, a major breakthrough. in the fight against breast cancer. new research is pointing to a

new drug scientists say is capable of preventing the disease. the drug in a recent study proved to give women a 65% reduction in the risk for getting breast cancer without serious side effects. we want to point out there are two other drugs on the market proven to reduce the risk. however, those have potentially lethal side effects from blood clots to strokes. another breakthrough for skin cancer patients. researchers over the weekend said for the first time patients with the deadliest form of melanoma have other treatment options. two new drugs cause tumors to shrink and can significantly prolong survivor rates. about 68,000 new cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the u.s. a year. up until now doctors have virtually no treatment for those with advanced melanoma that spread to other parts of the body.

studies have shown that breast milk is best when it comes to feeding babies, now new mothers are cashing in on what is called "nature's gold." it's selling for big bucks. there are on-line sites, one is basically a craigslist for breast milk. new mothers are pumping up their incomes by hundreds, even thousands of dollars. but this growing trend comes with some serious risks. >> we don't know the medical background of the donor. we also don't know if the mother has had any drugs. the skin of the muscles can become contaminated with diseases. >> plus, it's considered a food, not a drug. the fda doesn't regulate breast milk. the fda in fact doesn't recommend buying breast milk on the open market. but instead through approved milk banks. we've seen it all.
