young women. >> just a week ago today, he held a combative session with reporters, refusing to comment on the photo. and later, this was his defense. >> this is a twitter hoax. a prank that was done. i'm the victim of it. >> the blaming has turned into shaming, let's say. he also faces an ethics investigation and the wrath of new york voters. >> we have an exclusive interview with one of the women weiner admitted to sexting. >> reporter: the new york congressman delivered an abject apology to his wife and hillary clinton, to his constituents and the media, in tearfully and strikingly blunt language. >> once i realized i posted to twitter, i panicked. >> reporter: and he went on. >> i took it down and said i had been hacked. >> reporter: and on. >> i exchanged photos of explicit nature for three years.

>> reporter: among those was megan. >> i like to see someone who stood for something and was passionate about something. >> reporter: broussard said she received risque photos, including this bare-chested shot and the underwear picture that shot off the controversy last week. and she sent these in return. >> he was eager to hear if i wanted him or thought he was attractive. >> reporter: weiner insists, despite the controversy, he will not resign. he also says he didn't use government resources to send the message. that might be key in case the house looks into an ethics investigation, in what the congressman is calling "weinergate." >> is there an ethics violations? or does it have to do whether he used congressional resources? >> reporter: it's not clear right now. nancy pelosi wants to see if

violations occurred. he used his personal computer. his personal blackberry. but that not be enough to keep him out of hot water. house rules require that a member conduct himself on a way that will reflect creditibly on the floor of the house. they have used that rule in the past to determine if members have violated the rules. >> john hendren in washington this morning. thanks so much. weiner had been a leading candidate as the next mayor of new york city. at least some voters in his congressional district say they are reconsidering his political future. >> will you vote for him again? >> probably not. probably not. his credibility is ruined because he didn't come out and say what really happened. >> you don't think there's more important things going on in the world than sending things over twitter, whatever that is. somebody's underwear? it's a ridiculous waste of time. that's all we seem to do all these days is waste time on

people's personal lives. >> new york senator, chuck schumer, says he is saddened by what happened. we will have more reaction from capitol hill on "good morning america." and later in this half hour, more from the exclusive abc news interview with megan broussard. our new poll makes for tough reading for president obama. first of all, it says that 89% of americans think the economy is in bad shape. 59% disapprove of the president's handling of the economy. mitt romney actually outpoints mr. obama among registered voters. all other republicans, including sarah palin, trail the president by at least ten points. mr. obama is expected to announce a drawdown of u.s. troops in afghanistan some time this month. our diane sawyer has been traveling there with outgoing secretary of defense, robert gates, and general petraeus. they're offering the president several withdrawal options. mr. obama says now is the time, especially with the, quote, big chunk of the mission accomplished.

>> with respect to afghanistan, i'll be making an announcement soon. what i said this summer is the summer of transition, where we start handing over more responsibility to the afghan government. i intend to follow through on that commitment i made to the american people. >> there are about 100,000 americans in afghanistan. that's three-times as many as when the president took office. former imf head, dominique strauss-kahn pleaded not guilty to sexually assaulted a hotel maid. outside the courtroom, dozens of mads in their uniforms jeered the expert. more high winds are fanning flames as a wildfire stretches all the way to iowa. 5 buildings and 230,000 acres have been destroyed so far. and thousands more people may be forced to evacuate. firefighting choppers have been forced to wait in the wings because the winds have made it too dangerous to fly.

in southwest iowa, crews are scrambling to pile sandbags on the levee. but the army corps of engineers is expecting a few breach within days. they're expecting flooding that could leave towns under eight feet of water. if the water gets in, it could remain high until august. now, for this morning's weather from around the nation. severe storms with hail, high winds and a chance of tornadoes from bismarck to green bay. stormy from pittsburgh to upstate new york. thunderstorms from houston to jacksonville. snowshowers in the sierra range. record highs in the nation's midsection. >> 90s from minneapolis and chicago to kansas city. and just as hot from dallas into baltimore. cooler along the west coast, with 62 in seattle and 77 degrees in sacramento. coming up, the latest departure from the white house economic team. then, the guru appears. apple's ailing ceo takes the

the chairman of the president's council of economic advisers is leaving to return to teaching. austin goolsbee was in danger of losing his professorship at the university of chicago. republicans say the departure is

another sign that the administration does not have a clue on the economy. but goolsbee says the economy is on-track, despite recent setbacks. gas prices are down another penny. the energy department says the average for a gallon of regular is $3.78. it's the fourth week in a row prices have dropped. gas is still $1 higher than this time last year. the airline industry says its profits are likely to plummet this year because of natural disasters, and fuel prices. the industry will make a profit. business travel is holding up better than leisure travel. overseas markets are mixed this morning after a down day in the u.s. tokyo's nikkei average was up more than 60 points today. hong kong's hang seng is losing ground. in london, the ftse opened very slightly higher. and on wall street, the dow dropped 61 points yesterday. the nasdaq index lost 30. apple chairman, steve jobs, returned from his latest medical leave yesterday, to announce new apple products. the 56-year-old didn't say anything about his health.
