rawlings-blake no show. highlights from the mayoral debate all that straight ahead on this wednesday, august 3rd, good morning i am charley crowson. >> i am megan pringle. you may have been woken up out of a deep sleep due to thunder he. here's meteorologist justin berk. good morning. sorting through some of the data and it looks like a localized area from catonsville through baltimore, winds gusting 48 miles per hour and a lot of us came into work and noticed trees down around the parking lot. we got hit in baltimore city and harder up towards harford county. bel air high school did you hear the boom between 1, 1:30 that came slamming through at 55-mile-per-hour winds. half an inch of rain and that's the one storm leaving henned a very muggy air mass at 77. that storm blew through kent and queen anne's county. tree damage there. that's the little storm that could and it pushed through the delmarva. next round of rain just rain that comes through this morning and we could have severe weather during the afternoon

and evening. the time frame is suspicious. think during the afternoon we will look -- i think during the afternoon we will have to look out for the risk of severe weather. some storms could have winds close to 60 miles per hour. how about the road in here's tanya. >> reporter: i am going to talk about the tracks a power outage affecting the southbound penn line trains. they are about 10 to 15 minutes late approaching odenton. they are single tracking right now. 95 on the southwest side, this is just north of 195. no incidents to report. heavier traffic southbound to the left and you should be okay 195 to bwi as well. overnight construction is over. you can expect some delays downtown. this morning conway street eastbound between 395 and sharp street we may have alternating lane closures due to construction. we are doing fine on 95 southbound out of white marsh and the 895 split. megan, back to you. it's a storm -- if the storms didn't wake you up, the damage outside may surprise you this morning. trees are down.

thousands of people are without power from the thunder and lightning that rolled through. linda so is live where one family is dealing with quite a mess. linda. >> reporter: a mess is right. this is what they woke up to last night. check this out. a tree limb into the car. luckily it didn't do too much damage. they lucked-out when a huge tree fell in their yard barely missed their car, barely missed their house but part of it did fall into the back of their house. the home owner tells us that this is in the hamilton section of the city. basically, he and his wife and son were sleeping last night at around midnight. they heard the storm roll through and got up to shut the windows and felt pressure building in the house. they heard a loud boom and this is what they woke up to. this tree basically fell into the back of their home. it took down the back porch and went through the dining room window. no one inside was hurt. let's listen to what the homeowner had to say when this happened. >> we heard the storm around

12:30. we came down to the dining room and noticed the window was blown out of the dining room. quite scary but everybody is fine and everybody is safe. so that's the most important thing. >> reporter: in a couple -- a couple month ago the home owner says in april the same tree fell on the other side of the road and took down a pole that had to be replaced and power lines. but, again, this morning, the other half of the tree fell into the back of their home. luckily no one was hurt. we are dealing with power outages this morning. the bulk of those in baltimorecity and harford county and bge reports about 7,000 people in our area without power. live in hamilton, linda so, abc2 news. this morning, the principal for a catholic elementary school in the bronx has been fired over writings on race and white supremacy. archdiocese of new york says he was let go aspirins pal of our lady of mount carmel in the wake of media coverage on his

writings and a previous tie he has to group called american renaissance. >> our catholic schools are known for welcoming children of all backgrounds. all religions and races and providing them with a superior education. and given what he expressed in his writings, we believe it was incompatible with the mission of our schools. >> the priest has yet to comment -- the ousted priest has yet to comment. he is not going to say you are leaving me. >> bus driver behind bars accused of leaving a 6-year-old autistic boy on a bus by himself for hours. you are looking at video from that bus. the circle is the boy. and you can see the bus aide walk in and immediately leave. the bus driver and the aide had about 8 kid on the bus that day. the boy sat on the hot bus for nearly 6 hours before someone found him. he is fine this morning but his

family says they plan to sue for negligence. dunkin donuts worker is accused of offering something hotter than the coffee. she was a prostitute for customers who came in and out over the last few years. they caught her after a six- week sex sting and they called it operation extra sugar. an under cover officer says he gave a list of price for services and he busted her after she accepted cash. >> i am going to write this down so don't case it and get fired. the extreme heat has local pools taking extreme measures when it comes to taking care of swimmers. >> how much ice it took for the water parks to cool the water in texas for swimmers. >> i didn't write anything down. it was a joke. the peacock on the prowl. how he flew the coop and where he ended up. that's trait a-- straight ahead. thanks for waking up with us. belted in 5rbis and baltimore wins 8-2 over kc. first pitch tonight 8:10. triple digits temperatures in texas led to an extremely cool day at the water park. a ton of ice poured into the wading pool. the children enjoyed the children and the -- the water and the park even more. i am trying to read the storm reports here. and it looks like primarily what we had overnight it was limited with tree damage. but we have more today as we -- we could have more today as we watch the clusters of storms. it may pass to the south which keeps us on the risk of better risk of getting wet weather here. the cluster of rain into central p.a. and maybe approaching hagerstown. this what i suspect will reach our region between 7 and 9 and a cluster of strong storms may regenerate through the day.

we have energy here at 79 in baltimore right now. heat index of 81. thought we were done with this? no. temperatures won't move much today. most of us start mid-70s and will go to 85 and storms will cool us down but the storm could come with winds up to 60 miles per hour and large hail this afternoon. how about the traffic right nowhere's tanya. >> reporter: we are doing well on the interstates. no major incidents and most of the lanes are open so that's good. watch out for any fallen trees on 301. look at 50 at i-97 in parole. most traffic is going westbound towards the camera. very light traffic eastbound. 50 westbound at the bay bridge a disabled vehicle cleared out as we speak. that's over on the right shoulder. you can expect some delays downtown, conway eastbound between p 9 -- 395 and sharp street due to alternating lane closures. megan. it takes lot to stop a new yorker but this guy may have turned a few heads.

5:44. baltimore city mayoral candidates took the campaigns to the debate floor on tuesday night. they hoped to inform the public on where they stood on issues and baltimore city. sherrie johnson joins with us new reaction from the candidates. >> reporter: well, candidates squared off in the first baltimore mayoral debate of the campaign season. mayor stephanie rawlings-blake was not present. she attended several national night out events last night. six candidates running for the city's top spot took the stage at the empowerment temple in northwest baltimore. michael steele was the

moderator for the debate. more than 400 people turned out to listen to the candidates. and they discussed everything from struggling schools, boosting the economy and high crime rates. and when asked about the schools, here's what some candidates had to say. >> one of the oddest things i feel we should also do at this current time is to replace the head of the school system. >> we have to restore trust in the city school system. there's no trust. we have been through a scandal with cheating on the msa test, the parents lack confidence. >> we can't blame this on the system. because system is operated by the people. we need to understand -- >> we need to understand that going to school and learning begins where? at home. so now we got to get parents on the ball and get their children straight for when they go to school. >> reporter: now coming up at 6:30, we will hear what candidates katherine pew and

otis rolley have to say about education in baltimore city. mayor stephanie rawlings- blake did miss the debate and she was kick off national night out with a number of people and police. she started her night in park heights. the mayor says she sometimes wishes she had a clone. >> i would be at ten different places tonight. it's the annual event and happens the first tuesday of august every year for 28 years. i'm here to celebrate the same way i was last year and the year before. >> the mayor attended two events at park heights and zigzagged to other events throughout the city. 5:46. disturbing video shows the wife of convicted kidnapper and rapist phillip gra reado luring a girl -- garrido into their van. they were accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting jaycee dugard. >> can you go all the way down? too yes. >> at the time the video

information from special ops officers but the seals didn't talk. their identities are classified. a sigh of relief in washington this morning as lawmakers have reached an agreement on the federal debt ceiling. the plan raises the borrowing limit through 2012 and makes them some -- and makes deep cuts. deal includes a special congressional committee consisting of 12 lawmakers figuring -- that will have until late enough to cut 1.5 trillion dollars from the debt. >> my commissions of the past includes people not members of congress, this is all members of congress. and it's a smart way to go about this. and it is a big sword over their head. >> so if committee doesn't come to an agreement what to cut collectively, automatic rounds of cuts kick in. more excitement at white house. secret service officers took down a man who jumped a fence. james dork was handcuffed and taken into custody. officials are investigating a

backpack he placed in the area which was on lockdown as a precaution. secret service says he will be charged with unlawful entry and contempt of court. he previously had been ordered to stay away from the white house. now maryland's most powerful doppler radar and the forecast certified most accurate by weatherate. >> a break from the heatwave at a price tag that comes along with it in the form of rain and severe storms. we have had rough weather roll through baltimore city during the morning. taking down trees and knock winds up to 50, 55 miles per hour. today in today, normally up to 86 and we may be close to that. one thing of note, there's a report minimum warm temperature that we could be approaching as we look at lows around the 78, 79 degree mark and that could be in the record region. we are looking for records of 100 backin 2006 and other years not going to be approached today. storm complex across the great lakes.

look at this ribbon of rain from northern ontario back through northern virginia. that is actually the leading edge of this area of low pressure diving out of the great lakes producing severe weather across ohio this morning. the upper level winds will carry this system across maryland and virginia. and we will be on the proper track of this system to stay with the risk of some severe weather. so we will bring it back close to home and we will have to see how that rain flows into the region during the morning hours watching the rain enter on into western maryland but there's a disturbance around the bay that helped to enhance the flare-up between midnight and 2 in the morning. so once this interacts with the boundary and all the humidity qeerks flare up big -- humidity, we could flare up big storms. future radar shows a flare-up of rough weather at 3:30 to the west. and this is a little slow to the party last couple days. it's possible we could have rough weather in here early in the afternoon and then take us for the rest of the day and some of that may include

damaging winds and some large hail. wind in excess of 60 miles per hour would be the limit for severe weather. and that could take down more trees. and even power lines. looking at threshold of showers take us through tomorrow morning and then we start to clear things out briefly before the next round of weather hits us over the weekend. stormy skies today. vivid lightning, loud thunder and heavy rain and local flooding. and maybe even a risk of severe weather with large hail and damaging wind. 859 first day for many of us in three weeks. not reaching 90. and we will have showers lingering and try to taper off with partial clearing overnight. 69 could have morning showers in spots tomorrow. highs back to near 90, though. >> reporter: no problems to report at the bridges and tunnels. no incidents at the fort mchenry tunnel or harbor tunnel. let's look at 50. no incidents reported between annapolis or parole. 97 is doing well northbound.
