for herman cain since his quick rise in the polls. >> but front-runner, mitt romney, also found a target on his back, as well. abc's john hendren breaks it down for us from washington. good morning, john. >> reporter: good morning, rob and tanya. it was a lively debate. but it failed to shake up the gop presidential field. the front-runner came out strong, as expected. and the insurgent from texas did not have the big night his supporters had hoped for. you know you're in the lead when you're taking fire from behind. herman cain, former ceo of got father's pizza took plenty for his 9-9-9 plan. >> 9% income flat tax. and a 9% national sales tax. >> you turn it upside down, i think the devil's in the details. >> i think it's a catchy phrase. i thought it was the price of the pizza. >> reporter: also coming out on top, front-runner, mitt romney, who had a simple talking point of his own. >> right now america's in

crisis. if that does happen, i do. and i've done it. >> this is a two-person race. it's herman cain and mitt romney. a month ago, it was mitt romney and rick perry. >> reporter: hours earlier, romney captured the endorsement of the week. anyone hoping rick perry would capture the lead with his don't mess with texas style, might walk away disappointed. >> i'm still speaking. >> reporter: perry had trouble getting a word in edgewise. >> he was the man who wasn't there. >> reporter: this slip-up after the debate didn't help. >> the reason that we fought the revolution and the in the 16th century was to get away from -- >> reporter: the american revolution was actually fought in the 18th century. cain took a lot of heat. but romney was really the man with a target on his back, when it came time for each of the candidates to ask another question. everyone but ron paul picked romney, meaning they think he's still the man to beat. rob and tanya? >> john hendren, live in washington.

thank you for that. and with the election 391 days away, it looks unlikely that anymore candidates will enter the race. rudy giuliani announced he would not run in 2012. he didn't endorse any current candidate, either. in more political news this morning, lawmakers on capitol hill are trying which parts of the president's jobs plan could actually pass now that the senate has blocked the bill as a whole. the 50-49 vote came last night, falling well short of the 60 votes that were needed. president obama says the fight is not over. and that lawmakers who block the measure owe an explanation to voters. in other news now, there are a new warning overnight for americans traveling abroad. be on the alert for possible retaliation from iran. meanwhile, the state department says that retaliation could extend to attacks here on u.s. soil. this warning comes after an iranian-backed assassination plot was broken up. with more details, here's abc's

chief investigative correspondent, brian ross. >> reporter: the plot centered on capitol hill, at a popular spot at lunchtime. all time, say officials, to assassinate the youthful saudi arabian ambassador to the united states, adel al jubeir. a close confidant of the saudi king. u.s. officials pointed the finger squarely at factions in the iranian government. and members of the special operations unit of the revolutionary guards. the quds force, which reports directly to the grand ayatollah. >> this conspiracy was conceived, was sponsored, was directed from iran. >> reporter: in a criminal complaint that was compared to a hollywood script, officials said an iranian-american from corpus christi, texas, 56-year-old manssor arbabsiar, was recorded offering $1.5 million from iran for the ambassador's murder. officials say arbabsiar thought was dealing with a member of a mexican drug cartel who was, in fact, a government informant.

after a series of meetings in july with the informant, in the mexican border town of reynosa, arbabsiar went to iran in august and arranged two wire transfers of $49,960 each, downpayments, that went to an undercover fbi bank account. >> if the plot had not been foiled, we would be looking at a military confrontation. this is a provocation. and there's no other way of looking at it. >> reporter: two people have been charged but only one is in custody. the u.s. says there are at least four senior officials in the quds force responsible for the plot. iran calls the whole thing a u.s. fabrication. brian ross, abc news, new york. and we'll find out much more about this terror plot and the administration's response when vice president joe biden joins us on "good morning america" later today. and now, to those growing anti-wall street marches. protesters walked new york's fifth avenue and park avenue, the up affluent upper east side

neighborhood, targeting the homes of media and banking tycoons. today, they are going to gather in front of jpmorgan chase. in mexico, hurricane jova is roaring ashore in the popular tourist resort area of pair to vallarta. it weakened overnight. downtown pair to vallarta was boarded up yesterday. as much as 20 inches of rain is expected, which is causing fears about massive landslides. let's take a look, now, at the morning weather from around the country. rain from washington, d.c. to new england. also stretching into buffalo, cleveland and detroit. thunderstorms from the carolinas down to florida. showers from the upper midwest down to texas, with gusty winds and hail around st. louis, kansas city and tulsa. chilly with showers in the pacific northwest. >> just 58 in seattle. 63 in portland. phoenix hits 95. sacramento, 83. mostly 70s in the middle of the

welcome back, everyone. there are signs it could be a down day on wall street. slovakia's parliament voted against cooperating on a plan to solve europe's debt crisis, which could discourage investors. and there was a disappointing earnings report from aluminum giant, alcoa, considered a bellwether for the economy. overseas markets are mixed on the hopes other use companies will have better news. tokyo's nikkei average fell 35 points today. hong kong's hang seng up 118. in london, the ftse opened lower. on wall street, the dow lost 17 points yesterday. the nasdaq gained 17. well, the ads may say the cars are made in the usa. but an interest group says it's not true. the made in the usa foundation has now filed complaints with the ftc saying car ads promising vehicles are made in america are wrong. the chrysler 300 is assembled in canada and often has an engine made in mexico. the ford edge is also assembled

in canada. chrysler says the complaint is without merit. ford says it did not create the radio ad. for the second day blackberry users outside of north america are having trouble accessing e-mail and messages. blackberry users have been burning up the internet with complaints. apple's new icloud launches today. the preservice stores all of your data, such as photos, music, calendars and documents and syncs it with your apple devices. you do need the latest operating system and software. and if you're thinking of visiting japan here's a great deal for you. the tourism agency there is offering 10,000 free flights to the land of the rising sun next summer. tourism, as you can imagine, is off significantly after that devastating earthquake earlier this year. in return, the lucky visitors will be asked to write about their trip online. and next on this wednesday morning, a new warning about a vitamin supplement increasing the risk of cancer in men.

and dallas. there was some chilling testimony in the conrad murray manslaughter trial tuesday. >> we heard how dr. murray broke the news of michael jackson's death to his children. a crying paris jackson, asking to see her father's body one last time. abc's jim avila has more. >> reporter: dr. conrad murray, seen in these just-released photos at the hospital the day jackson died. telling the family, it needs to get an autopsy. >> they asked me, you know, do you know why he died? my answer was no. and that's the reason why it was recommended to the family to have an autopsy because i also wanted to know. >> reporter: that autopsy provided the most damning evidence of the trial so far. first, it showed that jackson was not sick. the autopsy photos shown in court displays a 50-year-old 5'9", 136-pound man in better health than most his age. with a strong heart and no arteriosclerosis. but most importantly,

the autopsy found that jackson died of acute propofol intoxication. that he could not have administered himself. >> the circumstances do not support self-administration of propofol. >> reporter: the mild-mannered medical examiner testified the two minutes dr. murray says he was out of the room was not enough time for michael jackson to inject himself with propofol, for it to reach his brain and kill him before murray came back. it was already an emotional weekend. jackson's children on display at a tribute concert. >> we're very happy to be here on this special night to honor our father. >> reporter: and again, the love of their father, front and center. paris at the hospital, moments after her dad died, telling the doctor of her grief. >> she said, i know you tried but i'm really sad. when i wake up in the morning i won't be able to see my daddy. >> reporter: the raw emotion of a little girl. jim avila, abc news, los angeles. that sick new hampshire engineer stuck at a research station on the south pole may be

rescued as early as friday. renee douceur is expected to fly out on a cargo plane that will take her to a british base on antarctica. she thinks she suffered a stroke six weeks ago. but harsh conditions have prevented a rescue so far. another warning about dietary supplements, specifically vitamin e. it finds that vitamin e significantly increases the risk of prostate cancer in healthy middle-aged men by 17%. large doses of vitamin e pills they protect against a number of ailments. but searchers say there's no reason for a man over 55 to take it. a san francisco giants fan beaten out of dodgers stadium has moved to are rehab facility. bryan stow spent seven months in the hospital recovering. he suffered a brain injury after being attacked in the parking lot at the dodgers home opener last march. two men have been charged in the
