for herman cain since his quick rise in the polls. >> but front-runner, mitt romney, also found a target on his back, as well. abc's john hendren breaks it down for us from washington. good morning, john. >> reporter: good morning, rob and tanya. it was a lively debate. but it failed to shake up the gop presidential field. the front-runner came out strong, as expected. and the insurgent from texas did not have the big night his supporters had hoped for. you know you're in the lead when you're taking fire from behind. herman cain, former ceo of got father's pizza took plenty for his 9-9-9 plan. >> 9% income flat tax. and a 9% national sales tax. >> you turn it upside down, i think the devil's in the details. >> i think it's a catchy phrase. i thought it was the price of the pizza. >> reporter: also coming out on top, front-runner, mitt romney, who had a simple talking point of his own. >> right now america's in

thank you for that. and with the election 391 days away, it looks unlikely that anymore candidates will enter the race. rudy giuliani announced he would not run in 2012. he didn't endorse any current candidate, either. in more political news this morning, lawmakers on capitol hill are trying which parts of the president's jobs plan could actually pass now that the senate has blocked the bill as a whole. the 50-49 vote came last night, falling well short of the 60 votes that were needed. president obama says the fight is not over. and that lawmakers who block the measure owe an explanation to voters. in other news now, there are a new warning overnight for americans traveling abroad. be on the alert for possible retaliation from iran. meanwhile, the state department says that retaliation could extend to attacks here on u.s. soil. this warning comes after an iranian-backed assassination plot was broken up. with more details, here's abc's

chief investigative correspondent, brian ross. >> reporter: the plot centered on capitol hill, at a popular spot at lunchtime. all time, say officials, to assassinate the youthful saudi arabian ambassador to the united states, adel al jubeir. a close confidant of the saudi king. u.s. officials pointed the finger squarely at factions in the iranian government. and members of the special operations unit of the revolutionary guards. the quds force, which reports directly to the grand ayatollah. >> this conspiracy was conceived, was sponsored, was directed from iran. >> reporter: in a criminal complaint that was compared to a hollywood script, officials said an iranian-american from corpus christi, texas, 56-year-old manssor arbabsiar, was recorded offering $1.5 million from iran for the ambassador's murder. officials say arbabsiar thought was dealing with a member of a mexican drug cartel who was, in fact, a government informant.

after a series of meetings in july with the informant, in the mexican border town of reynosa, arbabsiar went to iran in august and arranged two wire transfers of $49,960 each, downpayments, that went to an undercover fbi bank account. >> if the plot had not been foiled, we would be looking at a military confrontation. this is a provocation. and there's no other way of looking at it. >> reporter: two people have been charged but only one is in custody. the u.s. says there are at least four senior officials in the quds force responsible for the plot. iran calls the whole thing a u.s. fabrication. brian ross, abc news, new york. and we'll find out much more about this terror plot and the administration's response when vice president joe biden joins us on "good morning america" later today. and now, to those growing anti-wall street marches. protesters walked new york's fifth avenue and park avenue, the up affluent upper east side

welcome back, everyone. there are signs it could be a down day on wall street. slovakia's parliament voted against cooperating on a plan to solve europe's debt crisis, which could discourage investors. and there was a disappointing earnings report from aluminum giant, alcoa, considered a bellwether for the economy. overseas markets are mixed on the hopes other use companies will have better news. tokyo's nikkei average fell 35 points today. hong kong's hang seng up 118. in london, the ftse opened lower. on wall street, the dow lost 17 points yesterday. the nasdaq gained 17. well, the ads may say the cars are made in the usa. but an interest group says it's not true. the made in the usa foundation has now filed complaints with the ftc saying car ads promising vehicles are made in america are wrong. the chrysler 300 is assembled in canada and often has an engine made in mexico. the ford edge is also assembled

and dallas. there was some chilling testimony in the conrad murray manslaughter trial tuesday. >> we heard how dr. murray broke the news of michael jackson's death to his children. a crying paris jackson, asking to see her father's body one last time. abc's jim avila has more. >> reporter: dr. conrad murray, seen in these just-released photos at the hospital the day jackson died. telling the family, it needs to get an autopsy. >> they asked me, you know, do you know why he died? my answer was no. and that's the reason why it was recommended to the family to have an autopsy because i also wanted to know. >> reporter: that autopsy provided the most damning evidence of the trial so far. first, it showed that jackson was not sick. the autopsy photos shown in court displays a 50-year-old 5'9", 136-pound man in better health than most his age. with a strong heart and no arteriosclerosis. but most importantly,
