after a huge storm dumped snow across the northeast it left two million people in the dark. we are going to talk about why it is so important to get rid of your old machinery. they'll be stuffing their faces with halloween candy tomorrow. some parents will be indulging, too. we have tips on how to prepare

good-for-you treats. we have to start with the massive early season snow. it was awful. it left behind record snowfalls for this time of year. up and down the eastern seaboard millions are facing the first of many nights without electricity. three deaths have been blamed on the bizarre weather and the damages are being added up. >> reporter: it was mother nature's halloween trick, a freak nor'easter plunging 60 million people into premature winter. a ghostly little of might settled over the eastern midwest. it is a monster mess. >> i hate it. i can't express how much i hate it. >> reporter: the wave of wet snow and the force of fierce wind toppled trees on the houses and branches on the power lines. one line fell on to this car.

three million were thrown into the dark. >> you'd see see a flash in the sky and the whole neighborhood would go out. >> reporter: officials warned the ordeal is not even. >> we'll extensive and long term power outages. i'm advised, initially, some people could be without power as much as a week. >> reporter: workers spent the day clearing countless spilled trees and branches littering the storm's path. 1,000 airline flights were grounded. passengers on one jet blue flight were stranded for hours.

folks in the western part of the state have more than 26,000 people without power. here in our area the numbers were over 2,000. we saw our share of snow. in westminster it was a little coating on the trees and cars. some folks are worrying this could be a sign of things to to. in eldersburg things were worse. they saw close to eight inches of snow. baltimore county trace amounts of snow. enough to slow motorist down a little bit. we have been wondering why is it snowing days before halloween? believe it or not, this is tonight. a much different scene than we saw yesterday. looking at our camera from the inner harbor where the sun is

vaccine has been planned. we have more from belair where hundreds of pounds of old drugs were turned in. >> reporter: tossing old medication takes more effort than opening the trash, if you do it the right way. dea hosted third national take back day collecting all pills and bottles. in belair she knows parents and intended drug dealers. >> it is difficult with children. >> reporter: maryland had 92 sites. in the spring dea collected 5,000 pounds. they are hoping old medication doesn't end up in the water waste. >> they realized so many people dump medication in the sewer

systems and it has an effect on our wild life. >> reporter: boxes of medication are sealed and weighed. next week they'll be burned in a local facility. dea says nonmedical use of prescription drugs ranks second to marijuana. >> it exceeds cocaine and heroin. >> reporter: what causes you to feel better could have the opposite effects on a family member. >> the home is the source of supply of prescription drugs. >> reporter: you are advised to mix it with kitty litter before tossing it in the trash. >> dea says they'll hold another take back day coming up in six months. it is not scary decorations or tricker treaters you need to be worried about tomorrow. kids need to be more concerned about the contents of their candy. do the labels give you all the information you need?

the additive to hot dogs may be linked to colon cancer.

the f.d.a. said they put vitamins in hot dogs mean to offset hydrates to make them taste better and last longer. the amount is down but the american association for cancer research said they are not sure the changes reduce risk of colon cancer. the deaths are down but the incident rate hasn't changed much. ghouls and goblins aren't the scariest part of trick-or- treat treating this halloween it is children allergic to candy. 8% of children have one food allergy. parents need to be vigilant about looking at the candies, even if they are bite-size, because a lot of times packages do inspect have the information you need on the label. kids across the region will be stuffing bags, buckets and pillow cases and recyclable gk:í

bags with sugar-filled treats. they'll indulge in the favorite delights. there are some ways to trick your taste beth budding into enjoying nutrition good-for-you treats. we have a registered dietitian for cancer treatment centers of philadelphia. he is here with healthy ideas. thank you for coming in tonight. >> a lot of folks love pumpkin pies this time of year. >> we have a beautiful pumpkin buy sitting in front of us. we'll indulge but it is good to have a healthy option. whole wheat muffins are a great choice. they are 180 a muffin. they use brown sugar and honey instead of refined sugar. a lot of recipes call for more sugar than what's needed so it is good to play around and see what works. >> pumpkins high in vitamin a, high in fiber, low in calories.

they contain by a they carotene. pumpkin is one of the fruits and vegetables that we have now. at cancer treatment centers of america when i work with patients i encourage them to chose seasoned fruits and vegetables so you can get the most nutrients out of produce. >> this is my downfall. candy, sweets and treats. how can you avoid them this time of year? >> it is unrealistic to think you'll avoid them completely. it is good to have options available so you can chose the healthy things when they are there. trail mix is a great choice. it is filled with nuts with heart-healthy fats. when you are going to enjoy treats make sure you watch your portions and remember everything in moderation. >> when we work with patients

we are dry today. much different looking day. it feels like it did yesterday because we are on the cold side. temperatures are still falling. highs today made it up to 54 at inner harbor and annapolis. 52 cambridge. we are looking at 46 in north pennsylvania. we are going to see these temperatures on the chilly side once again, each as we go into tomorrow. satellite and radar up on a lot out in the atlantic is the storm well north of us. a few clouds are trying to stream in from the west. we'll be mostly clear in the overnight. high pressure dominating our weather. it is going to hold on as we go through the remainder of the night. cold air is still funneling in around it. we'll be in the 30s in the evening. future trend picking up on what's going on happening through time here. sunday a good evening for the most part. it is going to be cold.

we'll be void of cloud cover through the evening. clouds will roll in here, unfortunately, through the day tomorrow. we'll stay dry. in time for the trick-or-treaters there is a chance for showers to move in. we have a coastal low forming off of the carolinas. nothing like what we saw but we could be bringing showers in around 8:00. better chances for rain in the morning time on tuesday. your commute could be on the dicey side. then it gets out of here. that's good news through tuesday. showers in the morning. then we'll get sunshine. overnight temperature 30 degrees. clear and cold. halloween day 54. partly cloudy and cold. temperatures below normal. halloween night 42 degrees. showers possible. coolish and ghoulish. hopefully you'll get kids in a costume that might keep them on the warm side. it is going to be on the chilly
