good morning. i'm sunny hostin. >> and i'm rob nelson. it is election day in america, with many local races, plus governorships in mississippi and kentucky up for grabs. but next november's election day, weighing heavily on people's minds. >> candidate herman cain dodged our questions in california. but on late-night tv, he wasn't so quiet about the harassment claims made by a fourth woman. >> he will address those at a press conference later today. tahman bradley joins us with more details on this. >> reporter: hey, rob. appearing on "jimmy kimmel live," herman cain calls the sexual harassment controversy a firestorm. and says he is now ready to set the record straight. >> how is your day? >> well. >> reporter: herman cain's day may have ended with late-night laughs on "jimmy kimmel live,"

but began with a new controversy. >> there's not an ounce of truth in these allegations. >> reporter: yesterday, a fourth woman said cain sexually harassed her. unlike the other victims, sharon violet, a republican, made her claim in front of cameras. she said she went to cain for help finding a job years ago. >> she put his hands on my leg, under my skirt, and reached for my genitals. he grabbed my head an brought it towards his crotch. i said, this isn't what i came here for. mr. cain said, you want a job, right? >> reporter: the cain campaign calls the allegations completely false. a point the candidate made again on "kimmel." >> when you know that all of this is totally fabricated, you go from anger, then you go -- you get disgusted. >> reporter: many republicans so far have shrugged off the sexual harassment story.

in an abc news/"washington post" poll, more sthan half republican voters said last week that the sexual harassment controversy is not serious. >> we don't know how much longer he can hold on to the top spot if voters start to really question whether this is just a one-time incident or whether there's a pattern here. >> i'm in it to win it. i'm not going to be discouraged. >> reporter: the cain press release, attacking high-power attorney gloria allred. mr. cain will take on the controversy this afternoon in foox. rob and sunny? >> what a amount of theater that will be. and herman cain and the rest of the gop field will be interviewed today. everybody sitting down with a different abc news reporter. you can check out the full schedule online. at the white house, something of a shakeup among president obama's senior staff. the role of current white house

chief of staff, bill daley, is changing. but the white house says it's not a demotion. daley is giving up functions to senior adviser pete rouse. rouse has been performing his expanded role for several weeks. we're turn to the pressure on joe paterno over his handling of child sex charges at penn state. a top police investigator is questioning whether paterno had a moral responsibility to do more to stop the alleged abuse. documents show that paterno was hold about one specific instance of sex abuse. and instead of going to police, he simply told officials at the campus. >> it's a case about children who had their innocence stolen from them. and a culture who did nothing to stop it or prevent it from happening to others. >> paterno is expected to face tough questions about the case at a regularly scheduled news conference that will take place later today. the army is charging a military police officer with attempted espionage. it claims 22-year-old specialist

william millay attempted to pass national defense information to someone he thought was a foreign agent. actually, he was observed the whole time and no information was compromised. millay's attorney says he is innocent. and the december prats search is on for a missing 2-year-old boy. his mother says she left her son in his car when she went for gas. when she returned an hour later the child was gone. but the parents are in the middle of a child custody battle. and the child's father says he finds the mother's story bizarre. oklahoma is taking quite a pounding from mother nature this week. an earthquake rattled the center of the state last night. on top of that, a huge twister touched one in the southwestern part of the state, as well. it damaged an oklahoma state university field office, as well as a few other buildings there. emergency crews also had to rescue a family that got trapped in a cellular. thankfully, there were no

reported injuries. all of us here on earth will go something of a close encounter today without even knowing it. that is a huge asteroid there, bigger than an aircraft carrier that's hurtling towards us right now. today, it's going to pass between earth and the moon's orbit. it will be a mere 200,000 miles away at its nearest point. that's closer than any large asteroid since way back in 1976. seen a few of these stories this year. now, for this morning's weather from around the nation. more severe storms with gusty winds and hail around oklahoma city and houston. dallas, shreveport, little rock, and st. louis. heavy rains from des moines to detroit. half a foot of snow from northern iowa to wisconsin. a mere dusting from the twin cities. showers from seattle to northern california. >> just shy of 60 in sacramento. 37 in salt lake city. 40s from fargo to omaha. mostly 60s in the northeast. atlanta gets up to 70.

to settle a class-action lawsuit over overdraft fees. more than 13 million customers were charged $35 per overdraft in the past decade. under the deal approved by a federal judge, customers will get some of that money back. but not all. wall street bonuses are likely to be 20% to 30% less this year than last. the weakest since the financial crisis. wall street firms have struggled this year and cut thousands of jobs. overseas markets are now worried about italy's debt. tokyo's nikkei average lost 112 points. hong kong's hang seng was up half a point. in london, the ftse opened lower. on wall street, the dow gained 85 points yesterday. the nasdaq index picked up nine. here is some discouraging news this morning, laws banning or limiting the sale of soda and other sugary beverages in schools don't seem to be working. students at schools with such rules were actually more likely

baton rouge. >> and if you're flying today, some airport delays are possible in dallas, houston, kansas city, chicago, detroit, and minneapolis. and now, to the guilty verdict for conrad murray. for now, the doctor hired to help a severely sleep-deprived michael jackson will be spending his nights and days in a los angeles jail cell. >> the jurors unanimously reached their decision after less than nine hours of deliberation. jim avila was at the courthouse. >> reporter: michael jackson's parents, two of his sisters, two of his brothers, in the packed courtroom. just a few feet away from dr. conrad murray. >> we, the jury in the aboved titled action, find the defendant, conrad murray, guilty of the crime of involuntary manslaughter. >> reporter: outside of the courtroom, hundreds erupted in shouts of justice.

and in a moment, judge michael pastor, sent conrad murray to l.a. county jail. >> our sympathies go out to the jackson family at this time, for the loss that they have suffered. not a pop icon, but a son and a brother. and i think that's most important. >> reporter: the jackson family leaving the white house to cheers. joe jackson saying cryptically. and latoya who had tweeted earlier that michael would be in court with her, expressing pressure with the verdict. >> wonderful. absolutely. justice was served. >> reporter: the jury heard 49 witnesses and saw over 400 exhibits. they heard michael jackson's voice like no one in his inner circle had heard before. >> he's the greatest entertainer in the world. >> reporter: and while conrad murray did not testify, the jury did hear his voice, talking to police two days after jackson's death, telling them michael was

desperate to sleep, and begging him to give him milk, or as it's known in the operating room, propofol. >> i agreed at that time that i would switch the -- over to the propofol. >> reporter: it was a decision that cost dr. murray his livelihood and his freedom. the judge immediately sending him to jail, awaiting his sentencing on november 29th. jim avila, abc news, los angeles. how much time will murray serve? we'll get into that with our legal experts on "good morning america." and some sad news from the sports world this morning. boxing great, joe frazier, has passed away. smokin' joe was the first man to defeat muhammad ali. his career will ever be linked to ali's. they fought three times, including epic bouts in the so-called thriller in manila. he lost twice to ali. until late in his life, he always resented being ali's foil. he was diagnosed with liver cancer a few weeks, actually.
