news that the nation has botched the return of it's war dead is drawing fire from veterans and politicians. tonight questioning has revealed an array of problems including misplaced body parts and mutilation. it's a scene that's repeated itself over and over again as the remains of dead soldiers return home through dover air force base. behind the scenes federal investigators found people lost body parts and at least one instance cut the arm from a soldier so he would fit into a coffin. >> this is not acceptable. we need to get to the bottom of this. this is about respect. respect for the veterans. >> reporter: the wars have cost more than 6,000 american lives. now some families reportedly concerned offer if the remains they buried were their son or daughter, husband or wife.

>> i feel bad for the families because sometimes that is all they can bring back and to get closure you need to know that your loved one is where you want them to be. >> the defense department and the government needs to step up and put the processes in place to treat the remains with the dignity they deserve. >> reporter: for its part the air force said the fact three workers turned whistle blower revealing the problems is proof they view this like a sacred duty. >> they are still employed and they are making great contributions, it was this -- this goes back to how people at dover look look at their job. >> reporter: the fact nobody has lost their job is a sticking point for many. >> respect our dead and think that this could happen when nobody is looking is wrong and we will make sure it doesn't happen again veteran's day is

this friday. it's a positive day to respect all veterans who have served in all of our wars and to have something like this happen is not right and we will get to the bottom of it. >> reporter: abc 2news. >> now the air force reportedly became aware of the problems in may of last year but waited until last week to tell the four families their loved ones remains had been lost or mishandled. the defense secretary has ordered another review of the operations, they want the reports back in 60 days. to try to-to help homeless veterans the latest transition home to make sure they have a bed to sleep in has opened. a ribbon cutting was held at the newest facility on baker street. it's all part of the baltimore station that has bought the renovated town homes. this project broke ground in january of 2009 to help with the high demand the station is experiencing. >> the veterans that come here

are all homeless and all suffering from variety of forms of addiction, they can stay here for up to two years and during that time period they basically begin to put their lives back together so they can graduate from here and become productive citizens in baltimore society. >> and the demand for transitional housing will continue to go up with more and more veterans returning from iraq and afghanistan. now to the continuing coverage of the sex abuse scandal hitting penn state. today football coach announced he will retire at the end of the year. he is the most successful college coach in history and now his career is tainted by the abuse scandal involving his former top assistant. he has been charged with molesting eight boys over 15 years including at the penn state complex. joe said he was devastated by the case and looking back

have been there ever since and now telling us how we are progressing tonight. >> reporter: finally going to start to cheap of loosens. they are patching up holes they had to clean up in the street when they were testing the gas lines. this point the homes in this part of locust point without gas should be restored during the course of the evening. let me show you. the break in the line has been repaired a while ago but for most of the day crews have been purging the system and getting it ready to take natural gas. they have been testing the lining all day and the gas could start flowing into homes right about now. >> repairing are done we will do a purge and that basically is just a test to make shrieving is operating correctly and there are no other leaks. after that's done we have about 200 people that are ready to go outdoor to door and relight and restore service to each customer that's been affected

by this. >> reporter: now those crews started going going door to door about a half hour ago to cut back on the gas . if they miss your house they say they will leave a calling card on the door, just call the number, follow the instructions there and they will try to get somebody out immediately, even tonight because they want to try to get the homes restored as soon as possible because we are talking about hundreds of homes for a lot of people its been -- there is been basically no gas service and there has been no heat, no hot water and a lot of people are ready to get that back on. reporting live. >> good work. now the latest on the search for the escaped detainee. one point 83 was shut down near 28th as police were looking for the 29-year-old who is reported missing from central booking. corrections officials say he was being held for driving

without a license and also drug related charges. he is facing an immigration detainee. police need your help trying to identity a man who robbed a shell gas station. police say the man seen in these two pictures entered the station on smith avenue back on september the 27th. happened around nine at night. he pointed a gun at the clerk demanding money and got away with about $300. is he 45 to 50 and anyone with information should call the police or crime stoppers. or go to the website. . >> weather wise, another clear fall day but you know it can't last forever. take a look. front pushing if out of the west. it could bring showers but you will feel the difference by about 15 degrees or more by this time tomorrow evening.

we are down to 53 in baltimore. we topped out in the middle 60s today, tomorrow it'll be a tough climb to the mid50s, cooling temperatures dropping tomorrow evening and sunset at 4:57. we will talk about if temperatures recover by the weekend straight ahead. >> take a look, this is pretty neat. this is the newest weapon in the state highway war on snow. this strange looking device is a tow plow and it's attached to the back of a snow plow letting one truck plow two lanes. it can plow the next lane and dispense salt letting one truck dot job of two. it also helps reduce fuel costs and exhaust emissions. that's pretty good. the chesapeake bay home to many of the great natural resources and one of them took a big hit this year. don harrison was on the bay with the natural resource and sciencist to find out why. >> reporter: it couldn't be a more beautiful day on the bay

in november. below the water is a different story. >> what we found was all dead oysters. there wasn't a single survivor. >> reporter: oysters need salty water to survive. when the salt gets to low they die. the upperrer bay isn't as salty as the lower and it's impacted more by rain. we had a record setting wet spring which lowered the count greatly and then two big storms in august and september. >> which dumped a lot of water into the water shed which dropped the salt again again. we had a one two punch on the salt. >> reporter: last year oyster bars on the western side of the bay had a mortality rate of just 11%. the same beds had a death rate of 79% this year. it's not good news for those who cherish the bay. >> pretty depressing when you

hear that death rattle as these boxes hit the table. >> reporter: it's not common. it's happened five times in the last century all the way back to 1909. the last was in 1993. >> it's fairly clean inside. gives us the indication that it probably died after the tropical storms when the salt dropped. >> reporter: as bad as it is to see a dead oyster bar this won't affect the whole industry greatly. >> up industry will suffer a set back here. as a whole bay wide this is only about 2%. >> next generation to come in it may be up to ten years, maybe a little more, maybe less. >> reporter: on the chesapeake bay, don harrison. >> makes you want to go to the bar right now. when it comes to taking care of your nails many will get a manicure at a salon but one is going organic while educating

>> all right. nice quiet night after a slightly cooler day. temperatures now 53. yesterday they were closer to 60 and yesterday hitting 71, struggling in to the mid60s today. it was a east southeast breeze. of course bay water temperatures much cooler than they were just a few weeks ago. it was a nice day. little bit of a southeast breeze on the trees here and one last stop where we saw a great sunset but an early one at about 4:58 this evening. all dark out there now. the radar all sweeps continue to show clear. we could see a little rain popping up on the radar, by say midday tomorrow. not looking for a lot of rain but could see some. temperatures in the 50s out there this evening. we have 58 at the beach and the

highs today, a bit cooler than yesterday but tomorrow we will see temperatures another five to eight degrees cooler than what we saw today. webbed winds will shift from southeast to northwest. we are seeing the leading edge in pennsylvania, line of showers, not a particularly -- not particularly a lot of rain. we will see some showers through the day tomorrow and be ready for it to hit or miss shower. friday we could struggle to get out of the 40s. other than that temperatures will bounce back, by sunday back into the 60's and there will be a minimal changes in the outlook for the classic fall weather we have been having. more of it early next week.

we have tropical storm shaun sitting off shore that may at least spin clouds in our direction but looks like most of the rain from shaun will stay off shore but getting to be a well defined storm for this late part of the season. this storm likely to be potentially a hurricane warning. there was a warning up for bermuda. overnight 48, clouds on the increase, as we go into the day tomorrow. two degree guarantee 55, that comes midday after which temperature also fall off into the evening as we fall in to the 30s overnight tomorrow night. yeah, little shot of cooler fall weather here, that stays with us through veteran's day, a breezy day for the vets as we go in to the weekend some sun, dry conditions, warming up again by sunday. we have a shot of 70 degrees again by early next week. >> like that. baltimore county recognizing a windsor mill middle schoolteacher named the state teacher the year.
