making news this morning, was there an attack on the white house? >> a manhunt underway right now for a man suspected of opening fire with an assault rifle. bullets, actually hitting the white house itself. and new trouble in happy valley, as another man alleges he was abused at penn state and ignored by the school. and a hack attack on facebook. millions of users finding gruesome images, even pornography. good morning. i'm sunny hostin. >> and i'm rob nelson. we begin with those security trns at the white house. bullet-proof glass behind an exterior window stopped a round of ammunition from getting

inside. >> now, the secret service is working to determine if that bullet was fired last friday by a gunman who is still on the loose. for the latest, we're joined by abc's tahman bradley. good morning, tahman. >> reporter: good morning, rob and sunny. the secret service announced it found a bullet in a white house window. officials think they know who fired the shot. and they're trying to hunt him down. while president obama visits australia, there's growing concern back home about a threat to his safety. authorities say this man, oscar ortega hernandez of idaho is mentally ill. and may have deadly intentions. in a statement released last night, the secret service revealed that a bullet fired last friday on the washington mall less than 1,000 yards from the white house, may have hit the president's home. after the incident, authorities found this car containing an assault-style rifle and empty shell casings. the suspect had fled. but police linked the car to ortega hernandez. >> this is a man who discharged a rival in downtown d.c.

i think that speaks volumes. and we're going to need to speak with him to find out just what he was thinking. >> reporter: ortega hernandez has an extensive criminal record, from domestic violence to drug charges. abc news has learned that evidence from family and associates suggests that ortega hernandez is fixated by the white house. authorities suspect he has been visiting the washington mall for weeks. and they are fearful about what he may try to do. before the shooting he was detained by local police at an abandoned house. >> they handcuffed him. they had him on the grass. and i guess they let him go. >> i had no idea that anybody lived there. >> reporter: officials are taking no chances trying to hunt down oscar ortega hernandez, whether it's its unclear if he's capable of launching a sophisticated attack. rob and sunny? >> thanks, tahman. and we mentioned president obama's visit to australia today, along with that nation's

prime minister. mr. obama has just announced that the u.s. military will be a permanent presence down under. by the middle of next year, up to 250 marine personnel will be stationed there in australia. that number could increase, though, to around 2,500. u.s. aircraft will also be moved to australian bases. and it's a new day for the occupy protesters in new york, after a massive sweep by police at this time yesterday. hundreds of police officers forced the protesters from their two-month home, turning it from this -- to this. no tents. no tarps. no sleeping bags. occupy protesters were finally let back into the park overnight. but a judge ruled yesterday that the demonstrators could not sleep there. protesters are calling for a day of action tomorrow. they'll try to prevent traders from getting to their jobs on wall street. and there's been also a shooting at u.c. berkeley, about a half-mile from that school's anti-wall street demonstration. campus police say they shot and

wounded a man inside the business school hen he raised a gun. several students were in the school at the time. thankfully, though, no one was injured. it's not clear if the suspect was part of the occupy movement. and there are major, new developments in the penn state sex abuse scandal. the assistant coach who witnessed the alleged abuse now says he did stop the attack as it happened. mike mcqueary also says in a new e-mail message that he went to police about the incident, which contradicts earlier statements. and the mother of an alleged abuse victim is reacting with anger to jerry sandusky's comments about the sex abuse case against him. the woman tells abc news that sandusky did himself more harm than good by going on national tv and admitting that he showered with boys. and another former student has come forward to say he, too, was sexually abused by a professor at the school. the man claims penn state ignored his claims. but he later won a settlement. abc's jim avila reports from state college.

>> reporter: paul mclaughlin was just 11 years old, when he alleges that the then-penn state childhood professor, jack neiswort him over a period of four years, between 1976 and 1980. mclaughlin said he repressed the memories of abuse. he recorded conversations where he a was performing oral sex on mclaughlin. but when he went to the university with complaints, he was turned away. >> i was treated with hostility. denial. i was told that my complaints were heresy, despite the fact i offered them evidence. >> reporter: mclaughlin said penn state 240r9s refused to investigate his claim. >> i wasn't an important part of penn state. >> reporter: mclaughlin filed a civil claut against neisworth, that was settled for an undisclosed amount. neisworth retired in 2002, but

remained affiliated with the university. penn state officials declined to comment of mclaughlin's claims. but it could be a legal nightmare for the school. i'm jim avila, in pennsylvania. to presidential politics. and possible trouble ahead for newt gingrich. bloomberg is reporting that gingrich earned much more in his consulting role for freddie mac than he initially said. thes or sources say the speaker was paid up to $1.8 million for his work. gingrich said the figure was much less, like $300,000. back in may, the campaign suffered an embarrassing disclosure that gingrich had wracked up $500,000 in debt at tiffany's. the international space station is welcoming three, new residents. a russian soyuz capsule docked successfully this morning. it carriy eied the astronauts.

welcome back, everybody. well, facebook now knows why but not who. some users have been seeing unsolicited, violent and even obscene images in their news feeds the last few days. including a photoshopped picture of justin bieber. facebook says users were tricked into posting malicious java script into their browsers. but facebook does not know who the culprit exactly is. and employment is recovering at different rates in different states. economists say north dakota and

alaska are already back to prerecession levels. texas, louisiana, and parts of the northeast will be the next to recover. and nearly every state should be back by 2017. but there's no prediction for nevada, michigan and rhode island, except longer. and the postal service is getting a special delivery of bad news. it lost more than $5 billion in the past year. and it expects to lose more than $14 billion in the next 12 months. decreasing mail volume is likely the major reason. but the postal service is also has a $5.5 billion debt due friday. it may default. overseas markets are worried that the european debt crisis might spread. tokyo's nikkei average lost 79 points today. hong kong's hang seng fell 388 points. in london, the ftse opened lower. and on wall street, the dow picked up 17 points yesterday. the nasdaq index added 29. at the los angeles later today, ford will show off its greatly revised escape.

has been a hard year for everyone. she also said it makes her very sad to know that six people died back in that tragedy in january. also, a quick boat trip turned into a survival ordeal for two south florida men. they're recovering after spending four days stranded out at sea in a tiny dinghy after their boat sank. they rode their way to safety through 15-foot waves. exhausted, wind-burned and dehydrated, they finally made it to shore yesterday morning. more nba games are being cancelled, the result of the flay players refusing the league's latest proposal. that proposal called for games to start december 15th. that's not going to happen, now that the players have filed antitrust lawsuits against the league. the legal battle could actually put the entire season in jeopardy. now, we turn to college hoops and a little bit of history, as well. we get all the details from espn news. >> good morning. cole wright here with your espn news update. let's head straight to madison
