we begin this morning with breaking news. >> an outbreak of storms turns deadly overnight. the same system that has ripped apart homes across the south. cities bracing for a massive day of protest in the anti-wall street movement. but will they actually materialize? and the global uproar over these ads. world leaders pucker up. and good morning, everyone. i'm rob nelson. >> and i'm sunny hostin. there's breaking news across the south. a line of debris from a vicious storm system now stretches from louisiana to north carolina. >> the battering lasted well into the night, leaving at least four people dead, dozens more

injured, thousands now without electricity, and damage far too extensive to yet estimate. this morning, witnesses are telling some amazing stories. in south carolina, one woman says, after a tornado touched down and moved on, she noticed a nearby trailer had vanished. she insists even the cows in the pasture are now gone. others say being in the path of the twister was a lot like what happened to dorothy and toto in kansas. >> it's like "the wizard of oz." i felt like i was in a rollercoaster in the shower. i was on the ground. and i felt myself get lifted. >> and stay with abc. sam champion will have more on this deadly storm system later today on "good morning america." and the other big story this morning, occupy protesters from new york to california are promising to dramatically expand their demonstrations today. >> they're actually going to try to block streets during rush hour in los angeles and also here in new york, try to keep traders away from wall street.

tahman bradley is joining us, now, with the very latest on what could be another contentious day. hi, tahman. >> reporter: hi, rob and sunny. today, occupy protesters will mark the two-month anniversary of their movement with marches and rallies. police prepare for this anniversary by cracking down on protesters. the 2-month-old occupy wall street standoff has turned contentious, with protesters promising a day of action today. overnight, cities across the country cracked down on demonstrators. in dallas, police barricaded streets around city hall. police ordered campers out. their opportunities were pulled down. across the country, protesters promise no matter what cities do, they won't give up. >> you may be able to evict a tent. you may be able to move -- take down a tent. but you cannot take down passion. you cannot take down commitment. >> reporter: student protesters in san francisco showed their commitment, taking over a bank. police removed them by force. the students are demanding the

same things that occupiers from portland state university want, lower tuition costs. >> there's a million reasons why students at portland state are out here today, fighting for a brighter future. a future that doesn't look like the one we experience. >> reporter: in new york, zuccotti park, the birthplace of the occupy protests over income inequality and corporate greed, occupiers were in force today. police removed some of them by force so the city could clean the park. >> this is not the beginning of the end. we all know our economy is on the precipice of disaster. we all know that. >> reporter: the new york occupiers plan to march on wall street this morning. then, gather in subway stations. and later, march on the brooklyn bridge. all in an effort to disrupt life in the city. rob and sunny? >> tahman bradley, thank you. the suspect linked to that shooting at the white house will appear today in a pittsburgh

courtroom. oscar ortega hernandez was arrested after being recognized by a hotel clerk in central pennsylvania. he suffers from mental health issues. and there are reports he has become obsessed with presidents obama, who was in san diego at the time of the shooting. president obama vowed to expand influence in the pacific region and act strongly to moves by north korea. he offered many tanks to u.s. troops by hosting a new contingent of personnel. presidential candidate newt gingrich remains on the defensive about nearly $2 million he got from the big mortgage companies. on the campaign trail in iowa, gingrich tried to put a positive spin on the issue, saying he knew a great deal about washington. later, he told a radio interviewing he didn't remember exactly what he got paid but it was in line as what others make. he has surged ahead in the latest polls.

the military has a new bunker-busting bomb in its arsenal which is larger than anything it's had before. it's called a massive ordnance penetrator. and it's nearly 5 tons heavier than anything the u.s. has. it can go up to 200 feet into the ground, to take out facilities that might have weapons of mass destruction. several drug authorities say they have uncovered one of the most significant smuggling tunnels ever on the u.s./mexico border. it runs about 400 yards long, fully lit and ventilated. connecting stash houses from san diego to tijuana, mexico. but even more remarkable is what they found inside. 17 tons of marijuana. so far, two men are in custody. they're set to be arraigned later today in san diego. they could spend the rest of their life in prison if convicted of conspiracy to distribute. wow. also in southern california, a meeting of state university trustees turned violent after they approved a 9% hike in

tuition. angry demonstrators battled with police, shattering a glass door. even sending an officer to the hospital with cuts. four people were arrested in all this. that 9% increase means about an extra 500 bucks a year. time, now, for the weather from across the nation. the storm that pounded the southeast is clearing out. but it will be a lot cooler and mostly dry today in the northwest. plan on plenty of rain and up to two feet of snow in the cascades and northern rockies. showers in the northeast. and mostly dry across the nation's midsection. >> very chilly today from fargo east to minneapolis, with highs only hitting the mid-20s. nice and toasty, across the southwest, with highs in the 70s. mostly normal readings of 50s and 60s everywhere else. coming up, brand-new details in the penn state sex abuse investigation. abc news talks to another mother who says her son is among the abused. also, lip lock uproar. controversy over a series of new ads.

well, there's good news this morning from the auto industry. dealers will have extra reason to give thanks next week. november is normally a slow month. but the industry is on-track for its strongest month of the year. analysts say it's pentup demand. the average age of cars on the road is nearly 11 years, a record. and chrysler is adding 1,100 jobs at its assembly plant.

chrysler's ceo says jeep is a star in europe. and it's looking to expand the brand into russia and china. overseas markets are mixed on doubts that europe can solve its debt problems. tokyo's nikkei average gained 16 points today. hong kong's hang seng was off 143. and in london, the ftse opened lower. on wall street, the dow lost 191 points yesterday. the nasdaq index dropped 47. hard news to take here. for many people, the dream of retiring at 65 is dead. a survey finds one-quarter of middle-class americans feel they have to work until they're 80 years old. many say they want to keep working. but many say they have to keep working. the reason for all this, many don't have what they need to in their retirement savings. it was a bad day for abercrombie & fitch. not only did it report disappointing earnings, but it's being sued. by mike "the situation"

running down the freeway, and causing all sorts of chaos during the afternoon rush near phoenix. it was frightened and apparently not in the mood to be rescued after its owner was involved in a crash. after a brief chase, one officer finally stopped it in its little tracks. >> that dog was giving the police a run for their money. i like it. now, let's take a look at morning road conditions on this thursday. the trouble spots mostly coincide with the wet weather, including i-95, from washington to boston. and i-95 from daytona beach to miami. in the west, snow will be the problem on i-5, from seattle to medford, oregon. >> if you're flying, airport delays are possible in boston, new york city, philadelphia, washington, d.c. and miami. now, we turn to the latest in the penn state sex scandal. one of the alleged victims says he will testify in court that he was a victim of a severe sexual assault by jerry sandusky. >> now, the mother of another

alleged victim is speaking out. abc's jim avila reports from state college. >> it was unnatural from the beginning. >> reporter: she knows jerry sandusky too well. she shares a child with him. after a relationship that began when matt was just 10 years old. >> when it first started, you could see that he was excited to see jerry show up. and then, as it progressed, it got to the point where, he would look out the window and see jerry pull in and hide behind the bedroom door. >> reporter: matt has said publicly he was never molested. and to this day, is maligned with his biological weather. and his mother does not believe it. and said coach sandusky stole her son. meeting her son at the children's charity, second mile, mentoring him, a mom getting

insight into what she and prosecutors contend are sandusky's grooming techniques. >> it was jerry sandusky. any 10-year-old kid's going to be impressed by penn state football. >> reporter: how scary is this as a mom? >> it's a nightmare. nobody even wants to think that somebody would do that to their child. you know? and then, so many adults knew about it and did nothing. how is that right? >> reporter: i'm jim avila, in state college, pennsylvania. and police in the area are denying that they were contacted about the alleged abuse by former graduate assistant mike mcqueary. mcqueary claimed in a recent e-mail that he not only stopped the abuse in action, but also went to police about it. but the state college police, as well as university police, say there is no record of any complaint. a delaware mom is in trouble after police say she let her 9-year-old son drive the family car. witnesses say they saw the boy pull up to his school behind the wheel of a toyota, mom in the

passenger seat. police said the boy had apparently been bugging his mother about driving and she caved in. she faces child endangerment charges. the nfl's week 11 begins tonight, with the broncos hosting the jets out in denver. as for last night's college hoops action, highlights now from espn news. >> i'm lindsay czarniak with your espn news update. we begin with pittsburgh, trying to avoid its first loss of the season. ashton gibbs, meeting number nine pitt, against long beach state. pitt knocked down the three. they cut their deficit to six. later in the second, james ennis, gets the steal and the dunk in transition. so, long beach, was up ten. now, under six minutes to play. long beach state up nine. casper ware hits the three. long beach state leads 73-61. pitt down eight. gibbs brings it down the floor. gets into the lane. with the short jumper.
