the trial period is over. speed cameras are up and running in howard county. more cities in the u.s. are saying enough is enough. what's happening with occupy protests, even as one group prepare as march on wall street. just how safe are you when behind the wheel? a new study could provide some answers. we're going to tell you all about it on this thus, november 17. good morning, maryland. i'm charlie crowson. let's start it off as we do every day for you, a check of that forecast. good morning. it's 5:30. take a look at some cameras first off. we had to deal with fog, mist and spray. yesterday was wet. no doubt about that. overnight it was a little bit damp. we had some showers but not an

all out deluge. you can see the afterglow from some of the street lights. 22 and main street overnight you can see there. all the runners getting out this morning. just plan to damp weather. the winds will be picking up and dropping us down. we're 50 in bel air but 46 in reiserstown. we're looking at light showers pushing across 95, somewhere near bel air on down through glen bernie. 5:31. let's check on the the traffic now with tanya. overnight road work is wrapping up at this time. sos that should -- so that should clear the way on all of the roads. we're going to start out on 95 south of the city at 175. northbound traffic. the oncoming traffic is heavier right now if you're traveling southbound from elk ridge to laurel. you shouldn't have any problem.

95 at the bridge, we do have some road work on the right lane. that means you should stay to the left. no problems to report here, though, as you make your way from cecil county to harford county. 95 southbound out of white marsh just six minutes. if you're traveling near a school down in howard county, you better watch your speed. they have speed cameras near the schools and the goal is to change chiefer behavior. -- driver behavior. >> reporter: charlie, if speed cameras were enforced about a month ago, howard county would have made about $26,000. police officers passed out about 30 warning tickets a day during a trial period. officers say this shows how much the speed cameras are needed to slow down drivers in the areas where there are children. the little white vans are ready for anyone who goes 38 miles an hour or faster in a 25 mile per hour zone.

howard county says they're not trying to surprise anyone with this. they actually have signs posted on the road about the cameras. howard county authorities say traffic surveys found people were speeding in many school zones and despite critics' complaints that this is an attempt by the county to make money, authorities say the money raised does not go to the county. officers say it's about changing driver behavior in zones where children walk. >> we don't expect driver behavior to change overnight but it is certainly something we hope over time people will start to think to themselves there are cameras in those school zones in howard county. we better slow down. >> reporter: if you want more information on the speed cameras, you can go to abc2news.com. click on the home page where we have a story. you click on the link in the website and you can find out where the van and its twin will be on a daily basis. sherrie johnson, abc2 news. an unusual police check and a decision to --

[indiscernible] dozens of angry demonstrators showed up outside the board of trustees meeting room. at least three people were taken into custody. at one point officers used pepper spray against protesters and a glass door was broken cutting an officer on the arm. the tuition hike will take effect during the 2012-2013 school year. now an unusual police chase all caught in arizona. a little dog gave police a run for their money on a freeway in tempe. apparently the pooch was in the back of a car that was involved in a rollover accident. it freed itself from the wreckage and the dog then just took off running around the scene. state officers eventually cornered the dog along a median and returned it to its owner. no word yet on exactly what caused that vehicle to roll over. here's one guy who will be missing thanksgiving dinner this year all in an effort to save a buck. he is already in line -- already in line at best buy in st. petersburg, florida. he wants to make sure he's the first to take advantage of the

black friday deals. he might be a little bit ahead of the game. it's among the best selling apps ever. now it's simply out of this world. where angry birds is now headed. you already know you're going to buy it so just go get it. the backlash with the kardashians. what's being done to try to get them removed there the airways. why are they so famous again? i don't know. in today's tech bites android sales are on the rise. half of all smartphones sold worldwide in the tarred quarter were running google's operating system. that's up 25% from a year ago. android benefited from the delayed launch of the new iphone. also there are more android phones now. the average online viewer is now watching more than four and a half hours of video every month. the nielsen serv twice as much as just three years ago. there's also much more programming available from services like youtube, netflix and:le tv. however, only -- and

angry birds in an unusual place this week. you can see a stuffed toy floating on the soyuz spacecraft after it entered orbit. it took off from daz stan sunday carry -- from kazakhstan sunday carrying an american

winds gusting up to 30 miles per hour this afternoon. at riverside parkway we do have a report of a broken down car so just be careful through that intersection. let's take a live look at the beltway, see how things are moving along. no problems to report. we're starting to get a little bit of volume through as you make your way towards 95 in arbutus. no issues to report, at least not major ones. taking a look at the beltway at the key bridge, this is somebody going towards the toll plaza over the bridge. starting to build some volume here but no major problems to report. marc tracker system is not working but but bus and rail are on time. all marc trains are on time as women. follow us on twitter at maryland traffic for the latest traffic information. charlie, back to you. today rapper heavy d will be remembered. his wake is in mount vernon, new york from noon to 6:00. he died from a heart attack so this is not been confirmed yet. hours before his death he was on twitter where he posted,

today is the to-month anniversary of the occupy wall

street movement. today they're calling for a national day of action. this is a live look at protesters in new york. this is the new york skyline. but today there is a plan in place in an effort to shut down the new york stock exchange and wall street. there's -- they're set to start that around 7:00 this morning. the efforts are going to be to block the entrances to prohibit workers from getting in. from there they're going to try to take over the subway system across the five boroughs and then take over a park. one spokesman for the group says they're going to give the 1% a birthday celebration they will never forget. a little closer to home here in baltimore they'll be in the square. they have a protest planned for today as well. linda so will have more on that coming up in just a bit. a mother of an alleged victim in the penn state child abuse case speaks out. that woman claims school officials were told about the abuse and did nothing. abc2 news sherrie johnson is here with the details. >> reporter: charlie, the mother of alleged victim number one talks about what happened when she was called to her son's school after the boy told

a counselor and the principal he had been sexually assaulted by jerry sandusky. sandusky was a former penn state assistant coach. he's been charged with 40 counts related to sexual abuse of boys over a 15-year period. he says he was innocent of all charges in a telephone interview. now, his attorney says there were doubts about his accusers. the mother of alleged victim number one says school officials with keystone central school district did nothing when they were told about this abuse. >> didn't really admit anything at that point. he just said that he thought he needed to help or it would get worse. and then the principal said oh, you know, jerry has a heart of gold. >> the keystone central school district refused comment about the incident saying the keystone central school district has been and will continue to be fully cooperative with authorities in this matter. coming up at 6:00, we'll have all new information on another victim coming forward

and pennsylvania governor tom corbet is accused of not doing enough in this case. sherrie johnson, abc2 news. the build a bear workshop is recalling a teddy bear swimsuit set. you'll see it on your screen. we'll enlarge it now. the inner tube toy can fit around the neck of a child and pose a strangulation risk. about 20,000 of these have been sold so far. build a bear received one report of an incident where a 3- year-old girl pulled the inner tube over her head and had difficulty removing it. new for you this morning, a report out today saying people who ride in hybrid vehicles are less likely to be injured in a crash than those who drive nonhybrids. the study by insurance institute for the highway safety suggests that the weight is the main advantage. its battery and other components add about 10% to the overall weight of the car. >> the study shows consumers don't have to choose between fuel economy and safety. going green doesn't mean

skimping on crash protection. >> pedestrians are at an increased risk of being hit because hybrids are so quiet. the government is working on regulations intended to add sound effects to hybrids so they can be more readily heard as they approach intersections and also in parking lots. this morning the governor and the baltimore city mayor will me at the inner harbor kicking off to launch maryland star spangled 200 buy centennial celebration. -- bicentennial celebration. plans will be announced at 11730 this morning. -- 11:30 this morning. june 13 through the 19th of next year is the celebration. officials will speak at a public ceremony in front of the plow fill la of -- flow fill la -- flotilla of navy ships.

[indiscernible] if you've been thinking about quitting smoking, today is the day to do it. it's the great american smoke -out. the american cancer society encourages smokers who plan on quitting smoking to do so today. smoking is the most preventible form of cancer. and cause of death in our society. four maryland towns and three in our area are now considered some of the smartest in the country. ellicott city, columbia and towson ranked in the top 25 of the smartest communities with populations between 50 and 100,000. bethesda ranked number one. the rankings are based on the u.s. census data on high school dropout rates and what level of college and post-graduate work people living there have done. as we mentioned bethesda was number one. ellicott city came in at 15. columbia 16th and towson came in ranked 21st. how about the best place to raise a child? that honor is going to go to psychesville. the business -- sykesville. the business week says it's the best town in maryland to raise a child and tenth best place in the u.s. the website shows one

community in each state offering parents and families not only affordable living but also great places for high school scores and public education, safe streets, clean air along with amenities and diversity. we're taking a look at our weather net. i wanted to show this you to. baltimore and tide point 49 degrees. winds northwest at 9. one of the strongest wind gusts we've had in the last half-hour, 28 miles per hour. a sign of the really strong winds that are going to come in with this chill. now a steady north wind at 11 miles per hour. let's take you to anne arundel county. hanover right now you're 46 degrees. 47 in arnold. it will drop off as we're pushing the cold air across the region. as advertised everybody sliding their way through the 40s this morning. that 50 top of the hour in baltimore, we're still waiting for the update in a few minutes. it's 5:49. probably about 15 minutes away from getting the update from at least the airport. we're also looking at the

regional reports to our west, widespread 30s and 20s, a sign of the cool air already diving to the south. atlanta is at 53. but they had severe storms roll through yesterday as a result of the cool air bumping into the leftover warmth. they're still at 70 in charleston so some rough weather this morning. yes, there were 16 tornado reports yesterday across the south. most of that rough weather pushing through the extreme coast. still leftover residual showers. the pink and blue you see on the screen, snow showers back there in the high terrain of west virginia and also watching some snow showers up there across the great lakes. that is the hint of the cold air that will continue to spill on in here. that is the reason why we do expect to have maybe some flakes mixing in. we got those in the mountains and the cold air trying to catch up with the slow moving band of rain. yes, we're going to have a wet morning. looks like steadier rain is coming out of virginia. d.c. area, central southern maryland. plan for a few hours of wet weather and that could take us on into lunch time with some possible flakes mixing in. the cold air dominates. winds could gust 30 miles per hour. stronger today as we build in

that cold air. that cold air will eventually subside, at least the winds over the next couple of days. it's about the strong wind for today and temperatures in the 40s and dropping. a few flakes could mix in this morning. no stickage, no worries. 27 overnight. we clear it out. temperatures tomorrow will be stuck in the mid-40s. we'll slowly work our way back to the low 50s with sunshine on saturday. 60 sunday and then next week more wet weather, tanya. the big travel day wednesday before thanksgiving could turn out to be a soaker. how about this morning? >> we're doing okay. starting to get a little bit of volume out there on 795 southbound as you make your way towards the beltway but nothing to worry about so you're good to go so far. taking a look a the beltway at frederick road. outer loop to the right of your screen making your way away from the camera towards arbutus. a little volume on the inner loop as well. but it is moving and that is the good thing. elsewhere taking a look top side of the beltway at harford road moving very well on the right of your screen.
