laurel. cheryl? >> reporter: about a dozen students from north laurel woods elementary school had a frightening situation while on a school bus. howard county police say the driver acted quickly when a group of teens attacked the bus less than a mile from their school. >> they were hitting the sides of the bus. one of them tried to get into a door. she was able to drive away and call 911 as well. >> the kids were terrified from what i was told. >> reporter: minutes earlier a woman says a group of teens started banging on her car on old lantern way in the same community. news traveled to many neighbors. >> they were beating on top of her hood, you know, and everything and hollering and screaming. >> reporter: and there's a third incident within the hour. a few block as way, an off duty police officer was assaulted by teens. a neighbor called 911. police say it was a group of about 20 teens that intimidated people in north laurel. there's no doubt that the three incidents are connected.

one teen was arrested and charged with assaulting a police officer. the incidents happened on november 3rd, but neighbors haven't forgotten. last night, they held a community meeting with about 100 people. police say they have stepped up patrols since then no other incidents have been reported. now neighbors know to keep watch. >> we're just going to have to bond together is the only thing i know. if you see anything, report it. >> reporter: no north laurel, cheryl conner, abc 2 news. >> now, police suspect the teens live in north laurel. they call it an isolated incident and don't expect to file any additional charges. police say youth programs designed to give teens a leg up on a career in law enforcement gave one a chance to steal them blind. police discovered a wide array of police equipment in a raid of his home, badges and bulletproof vests. police say 18-year-old walter oliver of parkville even showed up on surveillance camera in a full police uniform complete

with a badge and handgun. >> we do know that he either worked or attempted to work at a private security company, and even identified himself as a baltimore police cadet. >> reporter: according to charging documents, oliver waited for a pregnant officer to go to the rest room then stole her badch from inside her purse. investigators also found red and blue flashing lights inside of his car. the second trial for two brothers accused of burning a pit bull is under way again. the 17-year-old twins are charged with animal cruelty after burning the 2-year-old pit bull d phoenix. the pit bull was doused with lighter fluid in 2009 and set on fire. a vet eventually had to put the dog to sleep. the first jury ended in a mistrial. a cecil county man has been arrested in connection with several robberies including one earlier this month at the maryland house travel plaza on i-95 in aberdeen. police arrested michael malpass

last night after a picture of the suspect was broadcast on abc 2 news. we're told several people called in tips. police say they found evidence in the home that linked him to the string of robberies. charges are pending in that case. experts say the foreclosures are beginning to finally slow down. in many cases, the damage has already. done and the original impact continues to erode some of our communities. abc 2 news' brian keebler shows us now a preview about the ongoing ripple effect. >> reporter: some families were forced out of the homes up to four years ago now. it's what and who has been moving in affecting the neighbors left behind. rats, trash, and decreasing home values and even crime is what has been moving into these neighborhoods of these foreclosed homes sit and it's what experts call the after shock of the foreclosure crisis as the foreclosure rate slows.

>> the foreclosures are the way health has fall noon vacancy. a lot of us have disadvantaged neighborhoods. now the ones that hadn't experienced high levels of vacancies are experiencing more because of the foreclosures. >> along with the quality of life problems popping up from the empty homes. tonight at 11:00, we'll show you the neighborhoods and talk to residents about what they are dealing with. we'll also explain what the city is trying to do to help battle that ripple back. that's coming up tonight on abc 2 news at 11:00. brian keebler, abc 2 news. governor martin o'malley's trade mission to india later this month is being called the largest in maryland history. the six-day trip will start on november 28th and includes stop s in mumbai and he hopes to create a judicial partnership.

this will be the governor's second trade mission. he visited china, south korea and vietnam in june. frostburg state university is building a center for sustainable energy research with help from uncle sam. the $2.4 million project will host sources of energy. and the grid will generate electricity by solar and wind technology. the federal government has committed about $1.5 million to that project. weather-wise, things are crystal clear out there this evening. sunset was at 4:50. we're still at a crystal clear scenario across the entire region. winds are light and calm. the air temps are falling sharply already down into the mid-30s and below freezing up in new york, pennsylvania. so another night we'll be in the upper 20s by daybreak.

through the evening, we'll fall through the 30s. grab that extra coat as you head out open the town. there are milder trends ahead toward the end of the week. we've got this for you coming up. new developments out of state college, pennsylvania. joe paterno has been diagnosed with lung cancer. scott paterno says his dad's cancer treatable. the diagnosis was made during a follow-up visit last weekend for a bronchial illness. also today, the ncaa told penn state it will be investigating the school in the wake of the child sex abuse scandal. ncaa president mark emmert sent a letter to penn state's interim president that they will examine "penn state's exercise of institutional control over its intercollegiate academic program." at the same time, an independent investigation is being called for how the school handled the child sexual abuse allegations. they want the committee to have

no connection or affiliation with penn state. as the ravens get ready for a big battle at the top of the afc north division with cincinnati on sunday, they are getting ready to play possibly without ray lewis. the future hall of famer has not practiced at all because of a toe injury. the ravens littled lewis as questionable but there are several reports that he will not only miss the game. last time lewis missed a game was december in 2007. he is looking at others to fill ray's big shoes. meantime, the team will officially place one of the original ravens into its ring of honor. matt stover. the ravens' unsung hero was with the cleveland browns. he was a raven until the team decided no the to re-sign him after the 2008 season. after playing with the colts, he retired as a raven earlier this year. he is the nfl's fourth all-time

leading scorer and ravens fans have been waiting sometime to honor this guy. >> it's just a privilege to be able to be part of the ring of honor. the other six recipients, i can't say enough about the community of baltimore and how they embraced the team in '96. remember i was part of that, and just for me to be up there, everybody else is gonna be up there with me. >> today, silver also received a signed football helmet from the maryland crusaders team which is made up of home schooled student athletes. silver contributes to the team each year, which the team says allowed them to keep on playing. the johns hopkins football team hopes to stay undefeated this weekend in the first round of the ncaa division iii football tournament. hopkins just completed its first ever undefeated season at 10-0 and has the second longest winning streak in all of college football, 15 straight. game time tomorrow is at noon.

thanksgiving is six day as way, but christmas is 36 day as way, so time to bring in the trees. that's what happened this morning at the annual tree to decorate the front of city hall was brought in and put into place. this year's tree is donated by pinehurst nursery in glen arm. the 30 foot norway spruce was put into place by the crane you just saw. the holiday season is just about here and around the area. decorations are going up all over the place. everyone's in a festive mood, sort of. downtown at the inner harbor, a major event is called it ace a waterfront life. it kicks off tonight and in towson, santa's workshop is just about open. we have a preview of all of the holiday stuff.

>> reporter: it's that time of year again. you can smell it in the air. the holidays are here. so if you are looking for something to get knew the festive mood, how about coming down to it's a waterfront life, a series of holiday-themed events taking place all around the inner harbor? >> we wanted something new and fun at the waterfront. this is one of the premier destinations, so we wanted to capitalize that. >> reporter: tonight, the first event will kick off. >> reporter: tonight will be polar express takes the harbor. west shore park will feature a winter wonderland. then of course there will be the community lantern parade with santa and mrs. claus welcoming them into the santa house tomorrow. >> reporter: one of the biggest events will be the laser light show showcased across the power plant building. we got a sneak peek of it this morning on "good morning, maryland." >> it will draw a lot of people down to the waterfront.

it's a series of laser lights that's truly spectacular. >> reporter: you can just travel up the road here to towson where you can visit santa's work shop. >> this is the second year of winter-fest, which is a major event here in towson. it starts on december 3rd with the baltimore county tree lighting on allegheny avenue. after the tree lighting, we have carolers there, singers, performers. we have the grinch coming and frosty and all kinds of characters. then mr. and mrs. claus arrive on a big, red fire engine. and they come down the street and they come to their wonderful santa's workshop over here. >> reporter: santa's workshop is housed in an empty retail space along the towson circle. with every twist and turn, a new character from christmas trees to snowmen. this year, the workshop will show case the piece of nostalgia, two rain deeres, tinsel and bows. >> and for people that lived in

that's our story going into the weekend. we may see additional clouds by sunday. tomorrow will look a lot like today with the brilliant blue skies. you need the sunglasses handy for sure. it was a frigid start many places like ellicott city. the early sunset sneaks up on you now coming up at 4:50 in the baltimore area. maryland's most power. radar is scanning all clear out there. temperatures stay wide now running into the 30s uniformly now. so what little wind we have is light from the south around 3 to 5. and as we take a look at the current windchill factor it's not an issue because it's such little wind to deal with. unlike last night where the windchill was getting you at night, the actual air temps will get you. harbor east 53, federal hill 54. this will be the case across much of the central part of the state. i will tell you this, that's a sneak peek at saturday. let's look at sunday.

ravens/bengals, kick offoff at 1:00. it bill be mostly cloudy and breezy by then. southwest wind 5 to 15. so a long field goal, maybe that's a bit of a factor but this is not bad for a game in late november, 60 degrees. you've got to like that. satellite radar pictures this evening, all clear and really no new weathermakers on the map at the moment. things are crystal clear up and down the east coast. high pressure bubble centers above tennessee and northern alabama. as this thing scoots east, we'll look for temperatures to moderate a little bit as this thing centers up over the mid- atlantic both saturday and into early sunday. there are some changes ahead, though, in terms of temperatures. we'll get into the 50s and 60s but b, the other changes will be additional cloud cover and a chance for rain to get in here eventually. saturday's looking like just about all sunshine. as we go into sunday, increased cloud cover. here's the next rainmaker over

kentucky or so about sunday evening. so look for the chance for rain to come in overnight sunday into monday. 29 tonight. clear skies, it will be frigid by daybreak. 52, lots of sun. tomorrow night, down to 39, partly cloudy and not as cold. your seven-day forecast showing basically, a, you have to like two ravens logos but b, the wild turkey. we only get them seven days a year on the seven-day. the rain is early next week. it looks like we'll clear out by the busiest travel day of the year by wednesday. turkey day is not too bad with sunshine. again this weekend, you have to like 50s and then 60s. generally dry. >> you have two football games this week. this is paradise if you like football. >> good stuff. i can't wait to see the deep fried turkey pictures and stuff from thursday night at the game at m & t bank. >> there will be a lot of good turkey down there, too.

thanks, wyatt. now to a health alert. people with certain blood types have a higher risk of stroke according to a study at harvard medical school. those with type a-b had a 20p, shier risk of stroke. and women with type b had a 15% greater risk of stroke. they are the least common of the eight blood types. while the study did show an association, the cause and effect relationship is not understood. for many women with breast cancer, it was the final drug they hoped would help them win their fight. so today's news from the food and drug administration hits very hard. the fda is revoking its approval of avastin which scott goldburg tells us is a popular but potentially . >> reporter: at a hearing this summer, mere talk of the food and drug administration pulling its approval of the breast cancer drug avastin was explosive. >> why don't i matter?

i have children to live for. >> reporter: while some patients swear avastson a miracle drug -- >> please have compassion and value my life. >> reporter: the fda decided to revoke its approval because statistics tell a different story. after reviewing the available studies, it is clear that women who take avastin for breast cancer risk potentially life tritt threatening side effects including severe high blood pressure, hemorrhaging and heart failure. >> the most important thing to know about the drug is although it can kill cancer, unfortunately it's killing patients from other things. >> reporter: 90,000 women have used avastin to stop metastatic cancer from spreading and some see no other alternative. >> i'm desperate. i was on the drug for nine months and i'm to the point of stable. i am on hormone therapy now. i know my cancer's coming back. >> we will need better clinical trials to identify who those women are that are going to
