emergency services, 56 accidents required ems response at the intersection since 2007. the state highway administration is working on it as part of a 6-year planks now, the only thing they are funding for, is the initial planning. to address the immediate safety concerns, the state agreed to construct j-turns. >> this is a band-aid. it's not going to help. >> reporter: that's the opinion of several parents and residents in queen anns county, mothers and students gathered 5500 signatures on a petition, told that full funding for a intersection just isn't there. some parents are having trouble with that considering the bay bridge toll would increase to $4. >> we are not going to see that money. it's like that chesapeake bay at the atlantic ocean. >> reporter: this community was affected by the latest death. >> that morning, that little boy was not just the rice family's son, he became every mother's son in this county.

>> reporter: queen anns county sheriff thinks the j turns aren't the answer and feels the design isn't sufficient now. >> sometime of vehicles have had trouble negotiating the radius of the turn. >> reporter: in the last six years, there has been five fatal accidents. residents and parents of queen anns county want to make sure the tragic statistic does not increase. in queen anns county i'm don harrison for abc2 news. people living in the area will meet with state comptroller on wednesday at the intersection, they hope to show him the importance of making changes here. students in landsdowne in baltimore county are mourning the death of one of their own tonight. police say 16-year-old bridget harold was struck and killed as she was trying to cross at ohio avenue on thursday evening. she was a junior at landsdowne.

it looks like a case of pedestrian error. the driver did not flee or found to be at fault. schools say they have councils at the high school all day to help her and friends and other students. >> a lot of people talking about it. many aren't saying anything. >> it's a somber environment in there today? >> it's a lot of grief going on today. >> her friends are planning a memorial at the school on monday. tonight we've learned the man found murdered in charles village was a university student. brandon hudson was found shot to death before 11:00 last night. police have no suspects or motive in this case. we will have more on the developing story new tonight on abc2 news at 11:00. new developments, a man shot and killed a campus police officer before turning the gun

op himself. looks like the man was going to try to throw officers off at fist but it didn't work. joce sterman has the latest developments from virginia tech. >> reporter: we've learned the shooter tried to run to a nearby greenhouse to change clothes after he shot and killed officer derrick krauss. a sheriff's deputy spotted the man before he could change, he turned the gun on himself. tonight we've learned the gunman was not a student and we do not know the connection he may have had with krauss. police say the man likely stole a rental car from someone 15 miles away from the virginia tech campus. tonight the community is mourning the loss of officer krauss. it's a tough blow to a department that has been through so much. >> you've heard or read officer krauss described as a swat officer and receiving awards and those types of things. derrick is more than that. derrick was a friend, to many in our department. derrick was a husband. derrick was a father. derrick was a son.

>> virginia tech was also the scene of the deadliest shooting in u.s. history in 2007 a student killed 32 people and injured dozens more before turning the gun op himself. the university was criticized for its response to the shooting. this time though they acted quickly and sent out six alerts throughout the day. we will bring you more updates on the developing story as we get them. thanks. we are getting a better picture of the t fallout from the penn state child abuse scandal. half the folks questioned say they support the decision to fire legendary football coach paterno. he was fired after it was revealed after it was revealed to him that sandusky was spotted sexually abusing a young boy. sandusky is out on bonds. wife of johnson will now go to jail. leslie will spend a year and a

day behind bars after she pleaded guilty to evidence camperring and charges in connection to an ex torsion case. leslie admitted to flushing a check from a developer down the toilet and stuffing money in her underwear. another baltimore police officer pleaded guilty in a towing scheme. a dozen officers accused of being bribed to push business to a car repair shop after responding to crashes. get this, first her car was stolen then a car it was found and came the bill to get out of an impound lot. that's the begin ing telephone story. you won't guess what one woman found when she looked in the back of her car. >> we got in to the vehicle this way. >> reporter: this mother asked we not show her face.

when she got her van back from police, all of this was inside. none of it, she says, belongs to or her family. on sundays morning she vis visited this shopping center. when she returned from one of the stores her van was gone. she filed a report with police and two days later officers call her to say they recovered the van and took it to an impound lot where she could retrieve it. >> we had to pay $230 to get it out, that's not including, what we are going to have to do to the part he damaged. >> reporter: her family noticed the van was trashed but once she got it home and they began to clean it out, they found this, 7 purse two briefcases, a duffel bag, bottles of liquor and scores of fake $100 bills. >> they should have processed the vehicle when it was found. >> reporter: police took fingerprints off the van and inventory ofwa was in the

cold air moving in as we go through the weekend. ly detail that coming up. back to you. university of maryland board of regents voted down the measure that would have merged the college park and baltimore campuses. they say the school should work more together. people rushed pushing for the mergers saying it would bring in research dollars. that t board didn't agree that was enough to make the change. if you are a baltimore city resident, the neighborhood you live in may have a lot to do with how long you live. the well being of people in baltimore's 55 different neighborhoods, examining factors that impact health, access to safe housing, outdoor space, and availability of tobacco, liquor and healthy food. >> in some neighborhoods it almost feels like it must be easier to walk to the nearest liquor store than it is to walk to the nearest supermarket

a maryland family moves in to a new home, crew from extreme makeover surprised the family in mardela springs. to help get the home finished and ready for the family the move in, in a week, producers found a local company ready for the job. abc2 news la month williams, introduces to one of the men behind the new house. >> reporter: i grew up in the construction industry. my father did road work and subdivision work. >> reporter: most boys played with tonka trucks and legoss wess was learning how to build using real machines and bricks. his dad not wanting to miss out
