the payroll tax holiday and unemployment benefits for two more months. afte the vote, president obama applauded both sides for reaching a temporary resolution. >> and i want to thank them for ensuring that as we head in for the holidays, folks at home don't have to worry about their taxes going up. >> not so fast, says house speaker john boehner, who now says he wants congressional leaders to negotiate a new year-long version. >> it is time to just stop, do our work, resolve the differences, and extend this for one year. i think we should do it all right now. >> the white house quickly called the speaker out for changing his tune on the bill. speaker boehner himself just yesterday called it a good deal and a victory. the administration says the house should pass this two- month extension now to avoid a devastating tax hike from hitting the middle class in just 13 days. if nothing is done, the white house says 160 million american workers will see their taxes increase in the new year. in washington, i'm kate amara, wbal-tv 11 news.

>> it was a violent week in baltimore city. lowell melser is live that city police headquarters with that story. >> the most recent shooting happening around 11:00 p.m. last night. a man was shot in the chest on east madison street. his condition is not known. it highlights a very violent 40 hour period -- 48-hour period. violence began after a 32-year- old man died after he was gunned down in northeast baltimore. police say the victim was shot in the head just after 10:00 saturday night in the 4400 block of bel air road. he was rushed to hopkins where he later died. then a 27-year-old man was shot and killed in west baltimore. police believe dayon barnes was sitting inside a car in the 200

block of north smallwood street at around 12:30 sunday morning when someone opened fire. he was taken to shock trauma were he later died. and then an hour later, police say a cab driver was pulling into a parking lot in the 2700 block on sisson street. we're told one of two passengers in the taxi pulled a gun, demanded money, then shot the driver. the victim was treated for non- life-threatening injuries. >> this is one of the dangerous jobs in the country, being a cab driver. but when you get called to a resident -- that feels safe for us. but as you know, it wasn't safe. >> we're told the suspects in this latest case fled on foot and remain at large this morning. police have very few leads in this case is. they're asking people to call the homicide unit at 410-396- 2100. homicide toll stands at 192 for

this year compared to 219 for the same time last year. lowell melser wbal-tv 11 news. >> jury selection should begin in the trial of their brother accused of running an illegal gambling operation. a bartender faces misdemeanor charges for making illegal payoffs. he's the older brother of joseph sunny minnick. >> ben cardin is taking the lead for bringing the new fbi headquarters to maryland. bureau is in need of a new headquarters. mr. carton is optimistic about bringing the headquarters out of the district. it would cost $1.2 billion and would not be completed until 2020, at the earliest.

>> welcome back to 11 news today. search crews have suspended their efforts to find the last of three boaters that fell into the chesapeake bay over the weekend. one boater went under after his cell boat capsized. a man on board was rescued but he died on sunday. a woman was rescued. all three were wearing life jackets when the boat went down. a pretrial hearing of an army private resumes this morning. on sunday, the investigator testified he found more than 10,000 diplomatic cables on one computer use by bradley manning. evidence that someone had been searching online for information on wikileaks was found on

we look at the future for north korea. >> kim jong il ruled north korea with an iron fist. his father founded the communist nation. after he died, kim jong il to terrains of power following his father's footsteps. >> he will be remembered as a person who was responsible for awful things, for the existence of one of the worst dictatorships in the world history. >> it took more than two days of his death to become public. was announced he died saturday morning of a massive heart attack -- it was announced.

tears were shed over his death. but in south korea, the military was put on high alert. at midnight, president obama called south korea's president and reaffirm the united states commitment to the south's security. kim jong il have long been at odds over other leaders. his sun is expected to face the same pressure -- his son is expected to face the same pressure. >> not much is known about his son. >> the funeral is expected to be held next wednesday. the nation has declared a time of mourning to last until the day after he is buried.
