[laughter] well, to be fair, it was on my side of their lawn. so it's -- you know, it's kind of close to the line. anyway, there was a story i read about some people. they're trying to pass a law that would require magazines to tell us whether a photo has been doctored or photo shopped, as the kids are calling it. i think it's a good idea for a law, because while we're at it, let me just mention, too, they should ban those annoying subscription cards that always fall out of the magazines right into my soup every time i'm eating. [laughter] the reason for the law is to make sure that people don't have unrealistic expectations about

how they should look. and, of course, magazines use photo shop all the time. sometimes i think they go too far. this is -- this is not something we've doctored. this is the latest issue of "glamour" magazine. let's take a look at "glamour" magazine. it says the real kristen stewart right here. if you look at her arm, it goes there and then -- [laughter] what happened? where's the --? did it wrap around? did it --? so, apparently, this is the real kristen stewart. we have been seeing a kristen stewart that has an arm that continues on. [laughter] the real one has one that stops right there. and then i don't know what's happening there. people complain that photo shop is used too much in advertising. this is an ad right here. and let's take a look at this. now, you see anything weird going on there at all? see anything right there? [laughter]

and i don't know, but it could be kristen stewart's hand. [laughter] all right. some people say that photo shop is used to plant subliminal messages. this is a coke machine. let's take a look at this. and you don't really see anything right away, but if you look at the ice on top right here, people are claiming it was photo shopped to look like a naked woman. that's what people are saying. do you see a naked woman? does anybody see a naked woman there? >> i do. >> ellen: really? some people do. i don't see a naked woman, but what i do see is a turtle on a pogo stick right here. now every time i see a turtle on a pogo stick, i'm going to want a coke. [laughter] so just in case subliminal advertising works, i thought i would try it, and i put it on my book, "seriously... i'm kidding." and it's selling very, very well. and if you look closely -- [applause] thank you. thank you. it could be selling well because it's hilariously funny, or it could be what i did in the subliminal advertising. if you push in and see what i've added on my shoulder here, it's ryan gosling. it's ryan gosling on my shoulder. [cheers and applause] and i want to be completely honest with you. we have used photo shop on the show before. i'm not proud of this, but we recently showed you a picture of me posing nude for peta, and by peta, i mean the organization, not the bread. this is the photo that i showed

of me, and that obviously was photo shopped. this is what i really look like. yep. [laughter and applause] they have covered up the tattoo on my neck. my neck tattoo was -- let that be a lesson. images can be altered. don't believe everything you see. always remember the best things in life cannot be photo shopped. your mind, your heart, your integrity, your bank account. [applause] and the point is you kind of barely want to see it. you don't want anyone to know you're doing it. harry claims to be the best at creeping. i'm proud to say i've outdone him once again. we have a cat named tom that is at our farm. it was a feral cat when we bought the farm that has turned out to be the greatest cat i've ever met in my life, and for the first time ever, there's an animal creep photo, and this is -- portia was getting ready to drive home. this is mabel in the back of the car ready to go. and if you look behind and see -- [laughter and applause] how about that? wait, pull out again.

you can just see, because that picture is just so perfect. thank goodness portia saw it. he'd be coming home with -- he'd be driving home. that's hilarious. he's a creeping tom, he's not a peeping tom. all right. i have some more never before seen photos to show you. they're for our new contest, a picture is worth $5,000. i've been asking my viewers to look around for old photos of me that i've never seen. i have very few pictures of me. here's some more that you've sent in. this first one is from linda laguardia, mammoth, from new orleans. this is a photo of you and my cousin leslie. and that is -- there's me in the middle, if you -- there. aw. and leslie somewhere in there. hi, leslie. yeah. if you can pan out, that was the jimmy club, and that was a camp that my mom dropped me off and picked me up two weeks later.

[laughter] and it wasn't a sleep-away camp, but it was -- there were some comfortable chairs near the lake, and i slept there. that's not true! it's not true. [applause] it may have been three weeks. this is from eileen powell. hi, eileen. i remember you. eileen powell. she lives in eureka springs, arkansas, now. this is a picture from a surprise party. see, i don't have any of these pictures, we threw for ellen on january 26, 1977, in new orleans. and there i am in the blue. and i remember those days when wood panelling went floor to ceiling and pants went up to our armpits. [laughter] i'm hoping it was a theme party for little kids, because we were too old to be dressed like that,

>> i definitely took a little bit of a break. and also, you know, when you're in your 20s, you have to figure things out and take a step back. and i'd been acting so long, all my life, that i think i just needed a little bit of some perspective. >> ellen: good for you for doing that, though. >> thank you. >> ellen: a lot of young actresses and actors keep going to kind of capitalize on the money and success. >> uh-huh. >> ellen: and you actually had the wherewithal to sit back and go who am i without all the stuff, right? >> yeah. it was good for me. and it reinspired what i do. >> ellen: now, is it because -- can i bring up that you -- well, i'm going to. [laughter] there's no way to bring it up without saying what it is. you suffered from depression. >> yeah, something that i don't feel like totally comfortable talking about, but it is -- yeah, it's a very personal thing. >> ellen: something you dealt with during that time. >> yeah. >> ellen: and do you think -- because this is a hard business to be in when you're in -- you know, delicate. i feel like i'm delicate. i understand that when you're sensitive, there's a lot of

energy coming at you when your career is at its peak, right? >> uh-huh. that and also it's interesting, as an actress, you're supposed to be sensitive and vulnerable and have this side to you. then you're supposed to be super sociable and on and nice to everybody, and that's a weird dichotomy. it's a lot to ask of a person. it's not a normal thing. >> ellen: no, it isn't normal. >> no. >> ellen: i think it's weird that people act like -- that it is normal to just be on all the time. that's why going to parties and things like that, i don't do anything like that, because it's overwhelming. >> yeah, i avoid the red carpet as much as possible. you have to do it to promote your movies, obviously, but you won't see me at an event just for the sake of it. >> ellen: just for the sake of it. and you moved to new york for a time. are you still in new york? >> i'm in new york, but right now i'm at my mom's house literally down the street from you. >> ellen: really? >> in toluca lake. yes. >> ellen: you're living with your mom? >> my mom, my grandmom, my aunts are visiting, and my cousins

live there. >> ellen: wow. >> three generations of ladies and three cats. >> ellen: wow. >> things are looking up for me. >> ellen: your life is glamorous. >> i have the worst bedroom. downstairs near the garage. at least we moved the cat litter box out of there, because there was like granules in my bed. when i got out of the shower, you know, like melting cat litter on my feet. no. >> ellen: you know, i have those little vacuum cleaners. you can clean that stuff up. >> it's hard to keep clean. it's hard to keep clean. >> ellen: right. let's talk about this movie, and congratulations. you're brilliant in it. your performance is just, you know, stunning, and it's beautifully shot. it's a very -- it's a heavy film. and the character struggles with depression as well. >> uh-huh. >> ellen: and why that guy stays with her, i mean, you just go take a bath for four hours in the middle of your wedding. but he's a good guy. he stays with you. tell people what the film is about. >> it's complicated.

it's not something you can sum up that quickly, but it's a lars von trier film so you know you're in for it. but it's kind of a dark comedy almost in the beginning. my character is going through depression, but at the same time simultaneously, this planet is coming closer to earth, so it's kind of a sci-fi movie as well. yeah, it's kind of a story about the end of the world, guys. >> ellen: about the end of the world on your wedding day. >> yeah, pretty much. >> ellen: and you won the best actress at the cannes film festival. [applause] >> thank you. >> ellen: and i -- >> there i am. >> ellen: i'm good at predicting these things. it's very early. but i predict at the very least you get a nomination for an academy award. >> wow, thank you. >> ellen: your performance really is going to get a lot of attention, i would assume. can we talk about the press conference where the director -- tell me his name again? >> lars von trier. >> ellen: lars von trier is

speaking -- he -- we're not going to show the clip, but i watched you squirm in your chair next to him and just -- you must have been thinking what are you talking -- what are you saying? >> yeah. i mean, literally, he -- he was so nervous, and he just got started on a tangent and then wouldn't stop, so it was like watching your friend just put their foot in their mouth deeper and deeper and deeper. and i was so embarrassed for him. >> ellen: he made -- just so you know what we're talking about, he made some comments basically said he sympathized with hitler and other really very disturbing things that you're just going -- and i just watched you kind of just look around going is somebody going to stop him from talking and then he just kept saying things like that about sympathizing with hitler and i don't -- i mean -- >> it stemmed from -- he tried to make a joke because the journalist asked him an inappropriate question about his mother and their relationship and what happened when she died.

and he was like, well, i -- you know, she told me that my father, who was my father, who i thought was my father, wasn't my father basically and this other guy was, but how i explained it was i thought i was jewish but -- he tried to make a joke in that and just kind of spiraled. >> ellen: then everybody at cannes, they took your party away from you and they took -- >> yeah. >> ellen: then you got punished because he got punished and it was a big mess over there. >> everyone can go youtube it. my face is actually pretty funny. >> ellen: your face is -- >> i'm like -- >> ellen: you were looking around. >> every emotion possible. >> ellen: you were looking for your publicist or somebody to go -- >> stop him. i leaned over to him. i tried to stop him. >> ellen: i could see you squirming. >> yeah. >> ellen: i'm sorry you didn't get to have your party. i think you'll have plenty of time to celebrate, because your performance was great. you are a big game player. i love games. and so when we come back, we're going to play guesstures. it's going to be a very fun game. i'm at an advantage because i have these shoes and you have those shoes. >> i'm thinking i might take them off.
