in on the recent polls. specifically this one out of iowa. i want to take a closer look. what you're going to notice ron paul mitt romney and newt gingrich are essentially in a virtual tie. i want to talk a little bit about ron paul. he is a diehard supporter in the state of iowa. people who will go out and vote on the coldest night. he's got a strong organization there, and then if you look at romney and gingrich one percentage point is separating them. so clearly this is going to be a battle. what's really interesting about todayes only one candidate is out campaigning. the rest of them are maybe celebrating the holidays with family and friends. but i'm talking about rick santorum who is pulling in the single digits here. he's out pheasant hunting. but as you can tell he's not alone. he's with some big time republicans out in the state of iowa potentially tying to get an endorsement maybe trying to up his numbers ahead of the iowa caucuses. interesting though only one of these candidates is out today and it's 8 days away. >> dick cheney is not out this

with them is he. >> reporter: oh, no. >> last week should have said newt was in the lead in iowa now i heard he got bad news over the weekend. tell us about that. >> reporter: in fact this actually isn't iowa it's out of the state of virginia. but newt gingrich got some big news over the weekend. the fact is he didn't gather 10,000 required signatures to get on the ballot out there. the primary ballot and voting takes place on march 6th but his campaign director issued a statement over the weekend that statement says, voters deserve the right to vote for any top contender we'll work with the republican part of virginia to pursue an aggressive write in campaign to make sure all the voters of virginia are able to vote for the candidate of their choice. here's why that's unlikely. state law prohibits any write in candidates on primary ballots in virginia. this is raising kind of a bigger question. how disorganized is newt gingrich and his team if they can't get all these signatures
