to call police right away. tonight police in los angeles may have caught a break they needed in the wave of all those arson fires after another night of fighting flames. authorities do have a man in custody. jamie costello has the latest. >> reporter: sources are saying that the suspect is a german national and his actions may have been motivated by the deportation proceedings against his mother. he told authorities that he hated america. los angeles begins the new year on alert with a total of 55 arson fires lighting up the l.a. hear since friday. and early this morning a possible break in the case. police are questioning a person of interest, someone they think resembles the tall man with the solder length ponytail. abc news has learned that an

incendiary device may have been found in the man's car. the -- the l.a. fire department said there could be others. since friday firefighters have been running from fire to fire and spreading. many have jumped the buildings, threatening lives. >> we have automobile fires intentionally set, adjacent to places where people are residing. >> reporter: others are fighting back with garden hoses. kelly, this person of interest is the fourth person to be detained. investigators haven't said if they think all of them are
