the appropriate response and force. he is now charged with assault of a police officer and other crimes. the department said it started when the man who appeared drunk parked alongside a squad car, hitting its door with his car. when the officers interviewed him another man came up and starting verbally abusing the officers. when police tried to deal with him the suspect came across the street and punched the officer. >> it's -- people should know this is the individual responsible for hurting the people that are trying to keep you safe. >> now police say there is a warrant out for the second man's arrest who escaped. they have yet to release his name. abc 2news. >> thank you. a 62-year-old found shot in a car is the first murder victim of the new year. police were called to the 4,000 block of edgewood around 9:45. when they lived they found the

man slumped over in the car with several gun shot wounds to the upper bomb he was taken to the hospital where he died. tonight one of the doctors facing murder charges for doing late term abortions has waived his extradition. he and another doctor are charged with first and second degree murder after a two year investigation. police say this started with a botched abortion that was started by the pair in new jersey and continued to this office. when things went wrong the woman was taken to the hospital. when police investigated they found 35fetuses in the freezer and some as late term as 36 weeks. the board say they have never been licensed to practice medicine in maryland and the other was practicing on a suspended license. riley has a bail hearing in utah coming up next monday.

new details in penn state child sex boss scandal. a memo sent out two weeks after sand usy was charged. they were apparently trying to repair his image and bracing for potential donor backlash. the memo were sent by rodney eriksson after he was named president after the firing the president. he describe how the abuse scandal is trending high on the internet and discusses how fund- raisers were told to handle donors including a policy of no refunds. two say they will address breaches in the privacy discussions. four men face charges of armed robbery in hartford after allegedly beating a pair of victims and forcing them to strip to their boxers. one is reportedly a marine that is waiting deployment.

. >> reporter: we have often heard of the dangers of drugs. it has a new meaning for all of the young men in this armed robbery after a drug deal gone bad. policece say a group of young men including a college student and a marine had their revenge after one claimed he was ripped off trying to buy marijuana. >> a individual in the northern part of the country said he had someone knock on his door in his boxers and his socks who said he had been robbed and assaulted by a group of people that were driving a land over. >> reporter: according to charging documents adam emory got the help of two other men two set up their victim. arranging to buy more pot. then they drove him from belaire to white ford at gun point before forcing him to strip, beating him and

abandoning him. deputies spotted the suspects vehicle outside this wawa store. they would find a loaded gun inside and the shot gun that even with their arrests the case was far from over. the victim said that his younger brother also had been held at gun point and was still missing. >> he indicated that his brother had been with him and he was under the age of 18, i 17-year-old and while deputies were finding the individuals they arrested we got a second call. >> reporter: that call led them to another rural road where the alleged drug dealer's teen brother had suffered a similar fatea. >> reporter: deputies have learned two more men may have followed the suspects in a second car to back them up in. one of them a 20-year-old has

been arrested and released on bail for his role in the incident. abc 2news. >> thank you. a paving scheme has landed a man in a lot of trouble. after failing to show up for an unrelated court case he has another legal battle to fight. >> reporter: there is another arrest after he failed to appear in at theft case this time it has nothing to do with paving. that company said tommy klack ordered thousands of dollars in furniture and high priced electronics including video games. he had them sent to his house but the company said he never paid the bill. he has been charged with two counts of thefts, one for taking items between ten and $100,000. he was supposed to be in court

competition sponsored by mit and nasa. it's putting the classroom knowledge to the test. >> really great experience overall. it's really helped us become closer as class and just the team work involved has been really great. >> this teaches working in teams, in small groups, having to coordinate and having to think about things you never are taught in school such as dynamics and communication. >> reporter: students are programming satellites using online systems provided by mit. team rocket will have their programs run by astronauts on board the space station in a live web cast from space. >> i think it's an exciting experience in that we have applied engineering, math, technology, computer programming, in a real life situation. it's a work space that they have to come together as a

team, solve problems, and get things turned by a deadline. >> reporter: it's the first year for the competition and students off to a great start. the team ranked had 4th internationally and second among united states teams. >> definitely didn't expect to do so well in the competition. when we first started but we worked really hard so we are just really thrilled to be ranked so high in the competition. >> coming in we just had no idea where we would go and now that we are in -- throughout the whole process we realize how much we got out of this. >> reporter: with most interested in engineering computer science this competition gives them a taste of what they can expect in their future careers,abc 2news. >> river hill student also travel to mit to watch the finals on january 23rd. severe weather.

it's january and now it feels like jana cross the country. after a very warm december there is almost two feet of snow in someplaces for the midwest to the east and a snowstorm as far as north carolina. temperatures in florida could threaten the crops there including the billion dollar citrus industry. >> what will happen is if it gets to cold it'll burst them -- creating juice and then that will immediately freeze so you will loose the entire orange. >> forecast calls for temperatures in the low 50s by the weekend. >> now maryland's most powerful radar and the forecast certified most accurate by weather rate. >> take a closer look at how far south this has extended. first beautiful shot over the inner harbor. days getting longer. remember that shortest dave the year on december 21st. days getting longer now.

30 degrees at pwi. winds southwest, change direction and got a lot lighter today. not -- the winds we were dealing with yesterday but a cold day. and really throughout the day we saw bright parts of the day through the middle part of the afternoon but clouds rolling in later in the dame look at the winter wonderland on the campus of frost bug. how about another stop further south and west. snowy conditions here at winter green where there they are skiing snowboarding big time right now and why not? there is more snow we are tracking with the radar and you can kind of see this line south of morgantown and garret. if this continues on its track it looks like it'll skirt south of the baltimore area. you know not out of the question that some of that could begin to reach in our direction. nothing here right now. just ground cover and look at the temperatures, 27hagerstown. 30 easton. we are below freezing everywhere, we are at freezing

in the river, below just about everywhere else and the winds have been very light today. that's been improvement. not as much wind chill factor against struggle to get above the freezing mark. there is that area of snow through the central part of west virginia. the track on this thing does take it just to the south and west. look, some of this -- the northern edge could skirt western maryland and possibly bring a few snow flurries later tonight, points mainly south of baltimore, i think most of this is going to be a concern for the state of virginia. and as we look across the east coast that's the only weather maker and it's a small one. further west, conditions all clear right now. we are getting set for ridging that will help things warm up. now that the cold blast is settled in a shift in the pattern to help things be mildler. no new big time weather makers in sight. friday we will look for temperatures to push up closer

to 50 and just an interesting side note. how far south did this freeze reach? teens in florida and close to the freezing from tampa to orlando. you get the idea of that concern with the crops down in florida. overnight 25, scattered flurries, mainly south. tomorrow 40 and improvement. certainly more seasonable. averages 42 this time of year and tomorrow night 28, seven day forecast, the outlook show basically the same thing we have seen after every cold blast so far this season. that is a pretty good warm up. this was a bigger cold shot but we still warm up again. 50s by friday into saturday. how is that? >> that's great. that's the forecast we like. >> reversal of fortune. >> good fortune. >> yes. >> thank you. >> well not good fortune for this actor. alec baldwin's antics on board

a flight are still apparently putting him in hot water. a spokeswoman for the new york states grocery stores say they have pulled tv adds featuring baldwin after some customers complained. the actor was booted from a flight on december 6th at lax for refusing to turn off his phone. the tv spots were filmed for the holiday season. they were going to run for three weeks last month but were pulled a week early. baldwin was hired for the adds after he mentioned that his mother is a customer there. everybody with young kids knows peanuts are forbid nope a lot of schoolsments a mother wants to know why her 7-year- old died from a reaction at school. and millions of people take their children to preschool but a new study sheds light on a growing problem that has nothing to do with what they are learning.

. tonight's health alert another important warning for parents about the dangers of peanut allergies. a 7-year-old died after having got access to peanuts. she said she had an allergy action plan at the school and she believes the school didn't do enough to help her little girl. >> fixed her hair, curled it up, put a ribbon on it and i sent her to school and i said i love her and she said i will see you later. >> reporter: the school declined to discuss her case sending a note home to parents alerting them to the girl's

death and that counselors are available. they are working on determining what cause her death. preschoolers apparently aren't getting enough active play time according to a new study on child care. doctors recommend that preschoolers get 90 to 120 minutes of activity a day. the research found that in an 8 hour day children spend only 2 to 3% doing this. the reasons parents push for more academic learning seem to place less value on their child's physical development. also state guidelines stricter. being active helps them learn school skills as much as taking turns learning to share and negotiate with their peers. and spending more time staying outside may help your child get better grades. researchers looked at 14 previous studies involving more than 12,000 children between the ages of six and 18.

they found that participation in physical activity is positively related to academic performance. exercise may increase blood and oxygen flow to the brain, reduce stress and improve mood, make children more like think to behave in the classroom and children involved in sports learn how to follow rules. this could mean they are more disciplined better able to focus. a huge makeover for john hopkins. a new $1.1 million patient care building will open. it'll cover five acres, have two 12 story patient towers and 560 private rooms. the new building has 33 state- of-the-art operating rooms and new adult emergency departments. each patient room will have a private bath for family members. outside building features and a quiet nurse call system will
