hi, everyone. i'm beth troutman. we found the best stories and videos of the day and it's time to show them to you, "right this minute." they thought he died in an avalanche with his master. but this dog dug his way out and found his way home. we've got the truly remarkable story.

>> [ inaudible ]. >> trapped on a burning balcony, a grandmother makes a split-second decision. >> i put my grandbabies off the balcony. >> hear about the heros waiting below. >> the octopus gets >> how one clever creature goes undercover on the ocean floor. >> and leapin' lizards. scientists unlock secrets to the reptile's tail that can change our world. >> we don't need robots. we can just use lizards. it's time to get our show started and our first story comes to us out of montana. take a look at this. this is actually the aftermath of an avalanche that happened around 2:00 p.m. on new year's eve. a couple, david and keri gaillard, married about a year were cross country skiing when this avalanche hit. dave gaillard was swept away in the avalanche and killed. this video was shot by doug.

he works for the gnfac, which is the after lav center. >> that's where he was buried, two, three feet under. this is path that went down. see all the snow on the side of that tree down into the gully. >> a frightening sight. you would think it would be difficult to survive something like this. here is the bittersweet part of the story. this is ollie. this is the gaillard's welsh core ki. we got this video from abc news. he was with the gaillards on the mountain when the avalanche hit and carry saw the dog get swept away by the avalanche and said he was almost swimming in the snow. four days later the coregy was found sitting outside their motel room, whim perring and even going across the street to where the gaillards had had breakfast the morning of the avalanche. >> i can't believe the dog remembered where they stayed and had breakfast. >> cook city officials found the

dog, called keri and they reunited the dog with the owner. >> i'm glad there was some comfort that she could derive from that tragedy. >> she said it was bittersweet. because she loves the dog but there's a part of her that wishes it were her husband, dave gaillard, who survived the avalanche. the quick action of some neighbors and firefighters managed to rescue five people from a fiery apartment. we got this video from nbc 2 and this all happened in rancho cordova. check out this cell phone video a neighbor was able to catch. there are five people caught in that apartment right now two adults and three children. margaret muton was trapped up there with her grandkids. the fire started in the apartment next door. that neighbor left the apartment, climbed over the balcony and joined margaret to try to escape the fire. >> flames were just coming towards the back window. it was just coming closer and

closer. >> a neighbor down below, nicole rhodes, started yelling up to the balcony and said, throw the grandkids over the balcony, we'll catch them. >> i put my grandbabies off that balcony to these folks here. my grandbabies was not staying on that balcony. >> within seconds the grandkids were safely on the ground and thankfully, the firefighters were there in no time because they are literally like 200 yards away. >> i'm so proud of our guys right now. they did such a great job, along with our community here in rancho cordova. i honestly believe we saved five lives tonight. >> they're lucky. you see the firefighters guiding down margaret and the neighbor. >> the neighbors were playing the role of firefighters and rescue workers in this one. they were actually able to save some people before the firefighters got there. >> that fire must have spread incredibly quickly to have flames that size with the firefighters able to get there as quickly as they were. surveillance video catches a lot of bad stuff that goes on in convenience stores and this video shows how a customer tried

to come to the aid of a clerk during an assault. >> oh! >> what's going on there? >> somebody is getting decked. >> this happened in los angeles. police say two guys between the ages of 17 and 20, tried to buy some beer from that clerk. >> they asked for i.d. and then the fight starts. >> me, it almost looks li ke t t kidser goingoi to take anrun. >> yeah. >> i think the clerk said hold it and that's when they like jumped the guy. >> that fourth person you see get involved is a good samaritan. tried to come to the aid of the clerk. >> feel terrible for the situation. he was getting pounded. >> the clerk is getting wailed on. the good samaritan outside has wrestled the other suspect and is keeping him out of the store. and he still has a drink in his hand when he goes outside to tackle that second suspect. >> oh, yeah he does. >> oh! >> the first suspect pushes the clerk out the door, near the end of the fight and then both suspects jump on the good

samarit samaritan. >> for a 12 pack. >> police say neither the clerk nor the good samaritan were seriously hurt. you really shouldn't be involved and get involved. what you should do is be a good witness. who can say no, if you see somebody getting wailed on like that. you often see people get religious tattoos, a cross, or maybe like some praying hands. how about getting a tattoo in a place of worship? >> wait. you mean like a tattoo parlor in a church? >> this is the serenity tattoo parlor which is located inside the bridge church. the bridge church is in a shopping mall in eastern flynt township in michigan. and the reverend of this church, steve bentley, says this is, you know, a way of getting different kinds of people it interested in their church. >> feels good to be able to come in here and know that it's a

nice, safe environment. >> i guess anything that you can do to get people in the door. >> was that ron burgundy on the wall at the beginning? >> that was ron burgundy's face. >> it's funny you bring that up, nick. that is ron burgundy because reverend steve bentley said that only family friendly tattoos will be administered to people's bodies in this particular parlor. you're not going to go in there and get a naked lady or a skull and cross bones in a tattoo par lo. >> yeah. >> no way. you can get a tattoo of ron burgundy. >> are you sure that's ron burgundy. that looks like anchor man. >> that is ron burgundy. >> i'm thinking of ron jeremy. >> i don't think you can get a tattoo parlor to get a porn star -- that's not family friendly. it's that time of the week where we bring you real or fake. >> yeah! >> always a good time. >> and our favorite dude is here to lay it all out for us.

welcome back to the show. but don't forget to check in at rightthisminute.com. great videos all day long. the octopus gets mimicked. you see this mimic octopus and that fish right there. >> the exact same color. >> that is a black marble jaw fish, has the same coloration. the mimic octopus will my mimic the shape and behaviors of the other fish like the lion fish and the sea snake. this fish right here, it's not known to mimic anything, but they say this fish, on its own, decided to mimic the octopus to leave the area.

>> they say what's interesting, this jaw fish usually stays in an area and doesn't get too far from its home. but, it took the opportunity to mimic this octopus, which is something jaw fish don't do. >> so it looks like it's this color all the time? >> uh-huh. >> it didn't change. that would freak me out. >> maybe he thought this mimic octopus is a really big fish that looks like me, so i'm going to hang out with him, let's hang out. he's a very progressive fish, reaching out to different ethnic groups and trying to say, hey, let's all be friends. >> not only is it different ethnicity, it's a different species. >> that too. if you want to test the durability of your product, i guess this is one way you can do it. guy from g form said to create this extreme electronic [ inaudible ] have rigged up their g form extreme [ inaudible ] for the ipad with an ipad and they've also put some locater controls and some

extra cameras on a big weather balloon. take a guess what they're going to do, nick. i think you probably already know. >> launch it into space, drop it. >> boom. they launch this thing up to what they say is 100,000 feet. they call its edge of space. and watch this thing get super dup high. getting some pretty pictures. look, it gets up and up. we're seeing like the curvature of the earth here. and eventually you hear the pop. and down she goes. plummeting from, again, what they say 100,000 feet in the air in space, back down to rerts. earth. here's its crash landing. the guy from g form tracked this thing down and according to them, it's all in one piece and fully functional. >> i feel like they could have achieved similar results by going like this. >> yes. >> i don't go into suborbital

evidently the world needs a new computer mouse. >> the pin is kind of on the mouse. you hold it like a pen but still take your finger to press the buttons and scroll. >> they're saying that is less harmful for your hand than the standard mouse clicking position. >> especially if you have to use your mouse for extended periods of time. >b itcom and wired form. the second piece of yummy science has to do with a lizard. this is a new berkeley did. they discovered that the lizard's tail as a lizard is flipping or jumping controls whether or not it pitches forward or destabilizes. if he didn't have that beautiful tail of his he might pitch forward and kind of fall out of control. see how his tail goes. after studying the lizard tail they determined robots could use the same lizard tail mechanism, they could control the pitch of the fall, so it doesn't go like head over heels. watch the difference.
